The UK gross is just so disappointing. What always surprises me is how few theatres they have in the UK. I mean their population is atleast 3 times ours yet theatre counts are never 3 times as high. But yeah thats dismal for DefMay

"Paramount Pictures International's (PPI) Iron Man went head-to-head with two new potential blockbusters in the overseas arena at the weekend and emerged relatively unscathed as the clear winner despite scorching heat across many parts of Europe.
The comic book adaptation added an estimated $32.5m from 5,557 sites in 57 PPI territories, a decent performance that elevated the international cumulative tally to $140m. Combined with non-PPI grosses in Germany, France, Austria and Spain, Iron Man stands at $165m.
Audiences rewarded the antics of Robert Downey Jr and friends with number one holds in South Korea, where the film added $4.7m from 490 for $17m, and the UK, where $4.1m from 485 raised the tally to a muscular $20.8.
It stayed top in France through SND thanks to an extra $3.3m and added $2.1m in Spain through Sony Pictures releasing International (SPRI) to rank second on $8.8m. In other number one holds through PPI the film triumphed in Australia on $3.1m from 221 for $10.6m, Mexico on $2m from 404 screens for $14.1m, Brazil on $1.7m from 254 screens for $8.5m, and Italy on $1.7m from 465 sites for $8m.

Warner Bros Pictures International's (WBPI) Speed Racer disappointed, just as the domestic launch fell below expectations. The Wachowski Brothers' family film grossed $12.8m from 3,940 sites in 30 markets.
Performance was generally superior in Asia and Latin America as Europe succumbed to the heat wave. Speed Racer opened top in South Korea on $2.4m from 229 prints, second in Mexico on $1.9m from 702 prints, and second in Brazil on $1.5m from 545 prints nationwide.

That is great for Iron Man. Hopefully marvel made some kind of deal with the distributors of germany, france, spain and austria so that they make money from those markets too.

"Iron Man has maintained its grip on the international marketplace for a third straight weekend, grossing an estimated $25.6m for an international total to date of $206m.
The comic book-based blockbuster’s nearest challenger was The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, which started its international roll-out with a promising estimated $20.7m from 2,000 screens in 12 mostly smaller territories.
All films in the marketplace were helped by a break in the hot weather that had kept Northern Europeans in particular away from cinemas last weekend.
Zooming past the $200m mark, Iron Man grossed an estimated $20m from 4,609 locations in the 58 territories handled by Paramount Pictures International (PPI), $1m from the 526 screens in the single territory handled by Sony Pictures Releasing International (SPRI), and another $4.6m from territories handled by other distributors.
PPI reported a drop of only 5% in the UK, where the Marvel production remained at number one with a gross of $3.7m from 479 locations, for a cumulative territory take of $25.6m.
In Australia, the film dropped 30% but still held on to the number one slot with a gross of $2.2m from 218 locations, for a territory total of $13.8m.
Top spot was also retained in Brazil, where the 25% drop led to a $1.3m gross from 255 locations, for a territory total of $10.7m.
Korea produced $2m from 358 locations, Mexico $1.3m from 408 locations, and Italy $1.2m from 321 locations.
SPRI reported a gross of $1m from 526 screens in Spain, for second place in the market and a territory total of $10.3m.
Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International (WDSMPI) said family fantasy sequel Prince Caspian, produced by Disney with Walden Media, opened 27% better than its predecessor did in the same group of markets (and 14% better than Iron Man). Launched during the winter holiday of 2005, the first Narnia film, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, went on to gross $453m internationally (compared to $291.7m in North America).
Opening day-and-date with its chart-topping domestic launch, Caspian took an estimated $7.5m from 700 screens in Mexico, 36% better than the first film. Russia produced $5.6m from 700 screens, 53% better than the first film. And Korea delivered $3.5m from 300 screens, 1% better than the first film.
Other strong performances came in India ($935,000, 57% up on Lion), Malaysia ($924,000, 18% up), Panama ($800,000, 55% up) and Indonesia ($651,000, 27% up).
Fox International’s What Happens in Vegas continued to play well outside the US, earning an estimated $20m from 4,200 screens in 56 markets over its second international weekend. The rom-com’s international total climbed to $55m.
In the UK, Vegas was up 22% to $3m from 405 screens, for a territory total of $7m. In Germany, it was up 36%, taking top spot with $2.6m from 509 screens, for a total of $5.7m.

Hold on actually, Variety states Shutter was only released in 55 cinemas in the UK.
I wonder why? after One Missed call made £1.2M and The Eye has made £1.9M so far.
Weird.

Re: Intl. Box-Office: Indy - $269 million WW, Iron Man at $480m
Paramount and Lucasfilms’ Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull unearthed plenty of box office gold at the weekend, grossing an estimated $143m in the international marketplace and another $126m in North America. Though it did not break any records, Crystal Skull will, if early estimates are confirmed, end up among the industry’s all-time top ten openers domestically, internationally and globally. Paramount put the performance down to good reviews and a response from audiences of all ages to the first Indiana Jones sequel in 19 years. The $143m international take came from 12,000 screens in over 8,300 locations in 56 markets, said Paramount Pictures International (PPI), with the film opening in many markets on Wednesday or Thursday. It was Paramount’s biggest international opening ever (easily beating the $102.5m start made by War of the Worlds in 2005) and the sixth biggest international opening of all time, ranking between Star Wars: Episode III and The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. The long-awaited fourth installment of the Lucasfilm-produced adventure franchise – with Steven Spielberg back in the directing chair, Harrison Ford returning as the title character and Cate Blanchett and Shia LaBeouf co-starring – topped local charts in all its major territories. In the UK (which has a holiday on Monday) Crystal Skull grossed an estimated $21.5m over four days from 536 locations. That was 70% more than Iron Man took during its first Friday-to-Monday run in the market, said PPI. In France, the gross was $14.1m from 781 locations, 96% more than Iron Man. Germany produced $12.6m from 841 locations, 262% more than Iron Man; Spain delivered $11.7mn over four days from 731 locations, 128% up on Iron Man; Korea reported $10m over four days from 619 locations, 76% better than Iron Man; Australia delivered $9m from 263 locations; Russia $8.4m from 602 locations; Italy $6.5m from 625 locations; Brazil $5.7m over four days from 257 locations; and Mexico $4.5m over four days from 426 locations. For the North American market, Paramount on Sunday (May 25) estimated a Thursday-to-Sunday gross of $126m for the PG-13-rated film, which screened in some cinemas just after midnight on Wednesday and spread to a total of 4,260 locations over the weekend. The studio estimated the film would take another $25m on Monday, the Memorial Day holiday in the US. That would give Crystal Skull a three-day weekend total of $101m (the tenth biggest of all time), a four-day Memorial Day weekend take of $126m (the second biggest ever, after the $139.8m achieved this time last year by Buena Vista’s Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End), and an overall five-day opening of $151m (the fifth biggest ever). The $269m global opening tally (which does not include Paramount’s estimate for the Monday holiday in the US) is the fifth biggest of all time, again ranking Crystal Skull between Star Wars: Episode III and The Return of the King. Other early estimates of North American box office takings (full estimates for the holiday weekend will not be available until Monday) put Buena Vista’s The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian at $23m for the Friday-Sunday period, representing a steep 58% decline from the film’s chart-topping opening last weekend. Paramount’s Iron Man appears to have held up better against Indy, dropping 37% in its fourth weekend to an estimated $20.1m for Friday-Sunday. In the international marketplace, meanwhile, Prince Caspian opened in Japan – the only major market that did not get Crystal Skull this weekend – and grossed an estimated and chart-topping $7.7m from 324 locations, said Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International (WDSMPI). Overall, Caspian took an estimated $18m from 3,361 screens in 13 territories over the weekend, bringing its international total to $49.1m, 11% better, said WDSMPI, than the first Narnia film at a comparable point in its roll-out. Caspian has already beaten the first film’s total takes in Russia and India. Iron Man, international leader for the last three weekends, grossed an estimated $12.5m from 8,000 prints in almost 6,000 international locations this weekend, according to PPI, one of the Marvel film’s several distributors outside the US. That brought the film’s total international gross to $228m – $191.5m from PPI markets, $10.8m from the single market handled by Sony Pictures Releasing International (SPRI), and the rest from other territories and companies. Fox International reported the same estimated gross of $12.5m, this time from 3,800 screens in 56 markets, for What Happens In Vegas. But the studio said the final weekend figure for the film – which has now reached $77.8m internationally – could be higher. SPRI’s Made of Honor took an estimated $3.4m from 1,745 screens in 25 markets, for a total to date of $25.6m. Speed Racer, from Warner Bros Pictures International (WBPI), dropped another 58% to gross an estimated $3m (representing 611,000 admissions) from 3,400 prints in 40 territories. International total to date for the big budget family entry stands at $29.8m. SPRI’s 21 grossed an estimated $1.8m from 1,025 screens in 37 markets, bringing its international total to $49.3m. WBPI’s The Bucket List grossed an estimated $1.2m (98,500 admissions) this weekend from 511 screens in 23 markets, for a running international total of $75.2m. Universal’s Forgetting Sarah Marshall grossed an estimated $800,000 from 515 dates in 9 territories, raising its international total to $23.2m. Nim’s Island, acquired by Universal for a parcel of territories, grossed $520,000 from 494 dates in three of those territories. The film’s running total for the three Universal markets now stands at $11.1m and its total for all markets at $27m. Universal's Definitely, Maybe grossed $115,000 from 122 dates in 15 territories (for an international total to date of $20.7m) and the studio’s The Other Boleyn Girl took $105,000 from 105 dates in seven Universal territories (for a Universal total so far of $33.1m). The film’s overall international total now stands at $37m. Fox International reported takes of $430,000 from 300 screens in 15 markets for Shutter (international total to date $16.5m); $266,000 from 450 screens in 9 markets for Horton Hears A Who! (total $138m); and $263,000 from 500 screens in 13 markets for Street Kings (total $30.2m). http://www.screendaily.com/ScreenDailyA ... &Category=

&Category=Yay, Indy passed Raiders entire international gross in a single weekend. Will probably have not much trouble being the biggest of the franchise by next weekend. When though, thats the question?

Re: Intl. Box-Office: Indy - $579 million WW, SATC: $190m WW!
Some quick comments:
Indy is comfortably heading towards a $800+ million total worldwide gross. How far beyond the mark it will get, will depend on its performance in Japan and its remaining legs in the USA. It should be at well over $620 million WW by the end of the next weekend. Too bad Euro 2008 hurts it, otherwise it could have gone up to $850+ million WW.
VERY impressive for Sex and the City. I think it'll soar past $300 million worldwide with ease and might even pass $350 million.
You know what film the true winner is so far, though? What Happens in Vegas. That's really a very surprisingly potent international performance for it. With Brazil and Japan still ahead, I see this making around $210-215 million worldwide.
21's run has been slow and steady. With Netherlands, Mexico, South Korea and othersstill ahead, I see its WW total at $160+ million.
Decent for The Bucket List, though I honestly expected more from it internationally. Still, around $175 million worldwide is still a fine number for the drama.

"Scare fare triumphed overseas as M. Night Shyamalan's "The Happening" edged "The Incredible Hulk" at the weekend's foreign box office.
"The Happening" took $32.1 million at 5,714 playdates in 88 markets, but "Incredible Hulk" turned in a far stronger per-screen performance, with $31 million at 3,165 in 38 territories, as the superhero pic won head-to-head battles while holding back launches in much of Europe.
The frame also saw solid holdover biz for "Sex and the City" with $23.3 million and "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" with $18.5 million.
Fox Intl. took advantage of the year's only Friday the 13th to launch "The Happening" in every market except Japan and Argentina. Co-prexies Paul Hanneman and Tomas Jegeus said the Shyamalan pic beat internal forecasts, as it overcame the distractions of the Euro Cup soccer tourney plus unenthusiastic reviews.
"There's a real disconnect between critics and audiences, who are responding well to a very watchable film," Jegeus noted, adding that moviegoer reaction has encouraged Fox to expect decent holdover biz in coming weeks.
The solid start for "The Happening" represents something of a rebound for Shyamalan, whose "Lady in the Water" took in only $30 million overseas in 2006. His previous pics have shown plenty of traction offshore, with "The Sixth Sense," "Unbreakable," "Signs" and "The Village" combining for more than $800 million in foreign box office.
"The Happening" topped $1 million in 10 markets and scored first places in France with $4.7 million, in Spain with $3.8 million and in Italy with $1.9 million -- with no competition from "The Incredible Hulk." It finished third in the U.K. with $3.4 million as "Hulk" easily won with $6.3 million and the third frame of "Sex and the City" took in $3.7 million.
"Hulk" generated socko Mexican biz, with $4.6 million, 86% higher than "The Happening," and Universal's biggest launch ever for that territory. The superhero pic also scored in the booming Russian market with $3.7 million, including U's biggest opening day ever on Thursday.
Universal noted "The Incredible Hulk" had easily outperformed 2003's "Hulk" in markets including South Korea, where it took $3.3 million, 88% up on its predecessor. "Hulk" grossed $113 million overseas by the end of its run. "Incredible Hulk" expands next weekend into Italy and Spain and won't face another superhero pic until Sony opens "Hancock" in early July.
Overall biz was typically brisk for a summer, as "Sex and the City" remained a formidable counterprogrammer and lifted its foreign cume to $136 million, led by an impressive $40.4 million in the U.K. Its Australian soph sesh turned in the top number, with $4.2 million, off 45%, and its Holland launch led with $1.2 million.
"Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" also stayed solid, with its fourth frame declining 50% for a foreign cume of $357.7 million -- leading "Iron Man" as the year's top international grosser by more than $100 million. With a Japan launch next weekend, "Skull" is certain to top the $400 million mark in overseas box office, becoming the first pic to do so since "Ratatouille."
Par's "Kung Fu Panda" put its paws on $14 million at 1,721 in 15 markets, with brawny second frames in Russia with $5.3 million and South Korea with $4.4 million -- topping "The Incredible Hulk" in both. Par's cumed $41.5 million overseas so far as it's opted for a go-slow release strategy for "Panda," with the family pic expanding to China and Mexico next weekend.
Disney's "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian" continued to find family coin with $11.2 million at 4,700 in 30 markets, pushing its foreign cume to $123 million. Soph seshes in Australia and Japan brought in $1.9 million each; "Caspian" turned in a boffo $1 million launch in Argentina, the highest opening of 2008, and the Mouse House's third biggest ever in that market.
With summer vacations not yet in full swing in Europe, Disney has held off the European launch of "Caspian" until late June, when it opens in the U.K. and France.
Romantic comedy "What Happens in Vegas" led the rest of the pack with $3.1 million at 2,000, pushing the foreign cume to $114.1 million -- well above Fox's expectations and nearly $40 million ahead of the domestic total.
Sony's "Made of Honor" charmed its way to $3 million at 1,500, led by a second-place Italian launch, for a $39 million foreign cume. Its "21" added $2.5 million at 1,255 to lift the international total to a respectable $63.5 million.
Sony's also opted to go gradually with "You Don't Mess With the Zohan," which took in $1.4 million at 455 in four markets for a $4.6 million foreign cume. "Zohan" goes into Australia, Israel and Russia next weekend.
Fox's "Juno" opened with $211,000 at 111 in Japan, its final foreign market, to lift the comedy's offshore take to an impressive $84.3 million."SOURCE

Re: Intl. Box-Office: Indy - $633 million WW, SATC: $256m WW!
- Great number for both The Happening and The Incredible Hulk, well, all thing considered. The Happening already outgrossed Lady in the Water in its first week. IH is doing better than Hulk. - 'Sex' for 350m. Fantastic. - Looks like Indy 4 will just either fall short of 800m WW or barely pass it. - Panda opens in China next week? emmm interesting! - Prince Caspian needs to NOT disappoint in big 5 markets it has left (UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy), if it still wants 4000m OS. And when I said 'to NOT disappoints', I didn't mean 'to be BIG', not necessary. If it makes AT LEAST 60m from UK + 35m in France + 30m in Germany + 18m in Italy + 25m in Spain, 400m is still in play. Otherwise, not a tiny chance. But right now, seems like 350m is assured. - Vegas will pass 200m WW. AWESOME! - Made of Honor is currently ahead of Speed Racer! both OS and WW!

The UK gross is just so disappointing. What always surprises me is how few theatres they have in the UK. I mean their population is atleast 3 times ours yet theatre counts are never 3 times as high. But yeah thats dismal for DefMay Our population distribution is such where there are fewer theaters, but more screens. I Believe there are just over 1,000 theaters in the UK, but the cineworld in Glasgow for example has 18 screens. Birmingham's cinema has 30 screens, with 6,200 capacity.

Indiana Jones is doing incredible numbers overseas
As is SATC. With quite a few markets to go, Including Japan, Russia, Spain and Sweden, there is a lot of steam left in this bad girl yet.
If it can score over $230m, its a lock for #1 or #2 grossing romantic comedy worldwide of all time
