Also Chris Brown has 3 songs in the top 10....pretty awesome for him

WEAKEND CHARTS: MADONNA WILL ROLL IN BATTLE OF DIVAS

Will Top Both Mariah Carey and Leona Lewis, But 25k’ll Get You Into Top 10

May 2, 2008

Hard Candy is sweet indeed.

Madonna’s final studio album for Warner Bros. before embarking on her deal with promoter Live Nation will debut at #1 on next week’s HITS Album Sales chart with a total of between 270-290k.

She’s easily the topper in a three-way battle of the dueling divas which also includes Mariah Carey’s previously #1 Island/IDJ album E=MC2 at 85-90k and J/Syco Music newcomer Leona Lewis’ Spirit at 80k.

Hard Candy is actually one of six newcomers in the Top 10, which would ordinarily be good news. Unfortunately, it takes a little under 30k in sales to get there.

Columbia R&B star Lyfe Jennings will bow in the Top 5 with between 70-75k for his third album Lyfe Change, as will The Roots’ Def Jam album, Rising Down, with a first-week number that appears to be between 65-70k.

Def Leppard’s Universal album Songs from the Sparkle Lounge is up next with 50-55k, boosted perhaps by their appearance on Dancing with the Stars this week.

Island trip-hop pioneers Portishead are back with Third, their first studio album in 10 years, showing surprising strength at 45-50k, good for a Top 10 debut.

SBMG/Commercial Music Group’s Now 27 keeps going along at 28-30k, followed by Big Machine/Universal Republic country star Taylor Swift (26-30k).

Reprise’s Tom Petty reunion of his early Florida band Mudcrutch rides some critical kudos and a series of intimate performances at the Troubadour to a bow inside the Top 10 at 26-28k, where it will duke it out with Rhino’s Juno soundtrack.

Pretty sure because of the Pinapple Express Trailer.

Btw, "Bleeding Love" has the record for most weeks (4) with 200k+ in downloads, at least temporarily (things are always changing with iTunes).

"Umbrella" and "4 Minutes" both had three.

Sales are up so much we'll probably see more of these in the near future.

Leona is getting REALLY close to 11,000 spins on Mediabase. That rarely happens. She might just miss it, though (yesterday she missed it by 16, today by 20 something I think).

And there's a very good chance Leona will outsell Mariah this week (for the week, not total). DAMN impressive.

Now, with Rihanna's 'Take A Bow' being released digitally this week, along with what is likely to be a top 25 hot 100 airplay ranking on the upcoming chart, what are its chances at hitting #1 ?

Or better yet, what do you think its first week sales will be ? It should easily hit number 1....

Rihanna has a strong chance for #1, probably by the end of May.

Already #20 after 12 hours on Aussie iTunes.

Well it has been a huge airplay hit so it should do well on digital sales this week. Should go Top 5 minimum.

Yup, already up to #18 on iTunes. Get ready for Rihanna's 3rd #1 on next week's chart. (OK or maybe the week after.)

very disappointing for Madonna. It's all about the long run now and waiting to see how the album fares. :(

Not terrible for Madonna, about average really. It will probably finish in the common 1-1.3 range.

A little surprised Portishead debuted pretty well, good thing though.

And it's nice to see Natasha Bedingfield return to the charts.

It is nice to see Natasha Bedingfield back in the top 20, her album REALLY needs it.

It just barely passed the 200K mark, and her AI performance may have saved her career (in the U.S.)

Also, 'Take a Bow' is officially #1 on iTunes :mer:

I really try not to buy what this guy reports, as it's usually late/or bias but he's horrible as of late. I love how he's crowing Madonna the winner, between her and Mariah. I'm talking about Perez ps. Mariah killed her it first week out here, TMB has been to number one already. While Madonna, debuted to average sales. The album is average. 4 Minutes, while i love the song, has yet to hit number one. Worldwide she's done better than Mariah, which is obvious, but come on. I needed to vent.

What was the last Madonna song to go to No.1 though? Was it Music back in 2000/2001? forget what year, it may not have, I don't remember.

Also, terrible debut for Phil Stacey, not that the album was suppose to be anything big, but still.

Does anyone have Spirit? I'm thinking about buying it.

Hits One Days for next week:
Quote:

IS A CHART’S BEST FRIEND

Legend’s Rick Rubin-Produced Columbia Album Will Debut at #1

May 7, 2008

It’s been 42 years since Neil Diamond released his debut album in 1966, The Feel of Neil Diamond.

The veteran singer-songwriter proves he’s still got the waist movement, Cherry, with his latest Columbia Records release, Home After Dark, produced by label creative chief Rick Rubin, set to debut at #1 next week for Steve Barnett and company with a one-week total of 125-130k.

That number, which could go higher with Mother’s Day weekend sales, should be more than enough to beat out Madonna’s WB release, Hard Candy, which appears on tap for between 85-95k after one week on top.

It’ll be the first chart-topping bow for Diamond in his four-decade-long career, based on one-day reports from all those music retailers recovered enough from Cinco de Mayo festivities to return our e-mails.

Diamond's last album for the label, 2005’s 12 Songs, the first one produced by Rubin, saw its sales stunted by Andy Lack’s rootkit fiasco, though it recovered enough to eventually go gold.

RCA American Idol alum Clay Aiken is On My Own Here, with loyal Claymates pushing his first-week sales total to 80-85k, just ahead of fellow J Records heartthrob Gavin DeGraw’s self-titled sophomore album with 75-80k.

Other chart newcomers include Show Dog Mercury country star Toby Keith’s 35 Biggest Hits, on target for 60-70k, followed by 143/Reprise pop crooner Josh Groban’s live CD/DVD package at 50-55k and a greatest hits compilation from Capitol Nashville’s latest Real Men of Genius subject Dierks Bentley at 30-35k.

The market was up 10% over last week, down 10% vs. the same week last year and down 11% year to date, which seems to be following the trajectory of George W.’s approval rating.

Hot 100 hopefully soon.
