Best Political Quote of the year
"We in Denmark cannot figure out why you are even bothering to hold an election. On one side, you have a lawyer who is married to a lawyer, and a lawyer who is married to a lawyer. On the other side, you have a true war hero married to a blonde with a huge chest who owns a beer distributorship. Is there a contest here?"

Well, the 'large chest' is over the age of 50, so the door isn't quite closed...yet.

Am I the only one who thinks that, as far as potential first ladies go, whatsherface McCain is kind of scary. Not I'm not saying elect a man based on how his wife looks, but my goodness. She looks half plastic, half zombie and half scary-as-in-my-worst-nightmare.

I know. But if there is one thing that Janet's 'wardrobe malfunction' taught me a few years back, its that the US doesn't mind seeing a woman's breast, just not an older woman's breast. Its a little too real and not pop-starlet enough to project onto. Jeff wrote: Am I the only one who thinks that, as far as potential first ladies go, whatsherface McCain is kind of scary. Not I'm not saying elect a man based on how his wife looks, but my goodness. She looks half plastic, half zombie and half scary-as-in-my-worst-nightmare. Cindy? I actually don't mind her as much as everyone else seems to, even though I don't like what she believes to be the 'role' of First Lady. If you look at all she's done in her past, I don't think she's the vacuous 'trophy wife' everyone has made her out to be. I do, however, dislike that she desires to present herself as one now, because in the end, you become what you perform. In short: The part that rings most true to me about Groucho's quote is the brewery. If McCain offered everyone a beer for free upon voting for him, he'd have no trouble coasting to victory. All hail liquer!

Re: Best Political Quote of the year
I do think it is interesting to compare the top 3 democratic candidates in the primaries with the top 3 Republican ones.
The top 3 Democratic ones were all married to lawyers. No trophy wives (or husbands) there.
The top 3 Republican ones all had trophy wives (and in the case of McCain, a trophy second wife and in the case of Guiliani, a trophy third wife).
Just sayin'.

She is not really a trophy wife, since he married her for her family's wealth. The typical trophy wife is acquired by someone with money. If anything John McCain is Cindy Hensley's trophy husband.

Just sayin'. That's pretty arrogant. So are you saying that just because their spouses don't have law degress or phds, they are stupid? That's very elitist thinking, IMO.

Yep, those are my exact words. Go back and check. You started by saying that the three democratic candidates were all married to lawyers. The next sentence was: "No trophy wives (or husbands) there", thus implying that if you had a law degree or (presumably) some sort of a university degree, you could not be considered a trophy wife. Now, admittedly I've never heard the term 'trophy wife' before, but at first glance I take it to mean a wife who is mentally inferior to her husband, and the husband marries her for her qualities in some other department, be it looks or money or whatever. Am I not understanding it correctly?

Am I not understanding it correctly? Trophy wives are normally "pretty" women (though I use quotes because I think Cindy looks kind of like an imp) married to less than stellar looking men. It says nothing about their mental status or intelligence.

Re: Best Political Quote of the year
I think shallow men marry women who will not challenge them intellectually; whose only job is to "look pretty." They want women who are, in a sense, subservient to them. (I don't mean in a demeaning sort of way, necessarily, but in a non-challenging way). I think this is especially true with men who are on their second or third wives.
I think non-shallow men want to marry women who are their equals or even betters, who aren't challenged by smart or successful women, and who can even be proud of their wives' accomplishments.
The term "trophy wife" usually is applied to successful men who marry pretty but usually vapid women as a "trophy" to show off how successful they are. "See? I may have a tiny dick and be as ugly as hell, but I'm rich and that's why she married me!" usually applies.

Re: Best Political Quote of the year
Okay, got it. I agree with you actually about shallow men marrying women who don't challenge them intellectually. And you obviously know a lot more about McCain's wife than I do (I've only seen her picture on websites to be honest. ) My somewhat arbitrary point was that university degrees shouldn't be used as a barometer of intelligence. Who knows, maybe McCain's wife is really a Voltaire in disguise. After all, lots of people thought that Ronnie Reagan was stupid when he was president, but when his letters were released posthumously it became clear that that was not the case..

Re: Best Political Quote of the year
Nancy couldn't be a trophy wife. Being a "trophy" is just that, an object often used as display to exhibit ones prowess. It does involve a certain understanding of looks and also the woman's desire to be professional or challenge herself with anything other than expensive trinkets. Cindy is thin, buxom and blonde, which is why many people have mistitled her a trophy, but a trophy usually also suggests massive age gap and also that the woman is not looking for and/or never had a serious career. Cindy had quite a serious career for long periods of her life. You don't have to have a degree or be a lawyer, but you do need to have displayed some desire to, you know, do things for yourself. What Groucho said was that all the wives of the democrats are not 'kept women.' Cindy isn't either, but I will agree that Giulliani and the relationship he had with his wives is in that trophy category. This might help: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.p ... rophy+wife

Re: Best Political Quote of the year
The reason I might consider Cindy as a trophy wife is mostly because he married a beautiful woman young enough to be his daughter as his second wife. (Age has something to do with the "trophy" category, too). Kucinich may be in the same category, which is why I limited my comment to the "top 3" democrats.

Michelle Obama's ass is vastly superior to Cindy McCain's bust. No contest. I haven't seen Bill Clinton's assets.

I actually agree that Michelle is very attractive. Groucho wrote: The reason I might consider Cindy as a trophy wife is mostly because he married a beautiful woman young enough to be his daughter as his second wife. (Age has something to do with the "trophy" category, too). Only if he was a teenage father. C'mon, 17 years isn't that much, especially when you're already north of 70. It was definitely more awkward when he was 50, though. Its the age ratio, and also the age of the younger partner that can be off-putting. Quote: Kucinich may be in the same category, which is why I limited my comment to the "top 3" democrats. Heh, yeah. But I have a random question, who was the third candidate you were thinking about for the Reps? I'm confused.
