COACH CARTER SURPRISE NUMBER 1

Coach Carter has become the second film to surprise this year after last week's White Noise. The film opened to $8,274,000 yesterday in only 2,524 theaters. Saturated flicks Elektra in 3,204 theaters and Racing Stripes in 3,185 theaters both opened to under $5m while In Good Company opened to a healthy $4.5m in less than 2,000 theaters. This is good for Paramount who had its top grossing film of 2004 being the disappointing Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events and second place of 2004 the surprise teen comedy Mean Girls.

Coach Carter will not only be the #1 basketball movie and MTV movie, but it will cross $100 million. You heard it hear first! The WOM is excellent, the opening is superb, it's going to make close to $30 million over this long weekend. I see no reason why it can't be #1 in those two charts, let alone cross $100 million.

I think so too, I think that it might pass 100m, if it doesn't it will be at like 94m. Along Came Polly made 28m and made 88m, same release date and that movie didn't even have good wom.

This film has potential to be the first $100m dollar movie of 2005. This is coming out of nowhere with most people predicting Hitch to be the first to hit that feat.

It should be a lock for 75 mil. If it has decent holds 100 mil. is not out of the question. This is a true surprise considering the low theater count and a lot of competition for the weekend.

Sat. 10.1 mil.

WEBSITE PROJECTIONS FOR COACH CARTER

BOX OFFICE PROPHETS
The based-on-a-true story basketball film with Samuel L. Jackson knocks Meet the Fockers out of the top slot with a very good estimated $8.2 million on Friday. Barring an excessively bad internal multiplier, we've got a second straight $20 million opener this month. We'll give Coach Carter a conservative 2.8 multiplier, giving the film a $22.9 million opening.
