I was going to make another thread on this, but I'll just keep it here. Here's an article by Mike Florio of The Sporting News. Quote: 1. Is Belichick giving the rest of the NFL the finger? Last week in this space, I raised the question of whether opponents of the New England Patriots might be thinking that the team is running up the score -- and whether such opponents will be looking for payback for the full duration of Bill Belichick's tenure with the team.
This week, it's even harder to make the case that the Patriots didn't run up the score against the Washington Redskins and Hall of Fame coach Joe Gibbs. Apart from yet another fake-spike play late in the first half, the Patriots amazingly eschewed a field-goal attempt while leading 38-0 with 11 minutes to play and went for it on fourth-and-short from the Redskins' 7-yard line.
Let's get this straight: Belichick would have been uncomfortable with a lead of only 41 with 11 minutes to go? Please. The Redskins hadn't scored a point. Even if the Patriots had pulled 11 guys out of the stands to play defense the rest of the way, the gap would not have been closed.
And then, leading 52-7 with less than a minute to play, New England still had numerous starters on the field. That's simply inexcusable.
Belichick could be telling the rest of the NFL that if a big deal is going to be made out of the Patriots breaking a signal-stealing rule that many other teams routinely violate, then Belichick will stay fully within the rules -- and obliterate anyone who crosses his path.
The backlash is going to begin. As the buildup begins to the biggest regular-season game of the year -- and possibly ever -- the media will probe the question of whether Belichick is bullying the rest of the league.
Even though the Colts are 7-0, this New England team is so good that, next week at this time, folks might be debating the question of whether the Patriots ran up the score against the defending Super Bowl champs. Okay, so what is Belichick supposed to do, tell his team to stop playing? Let the Redskins score a touchdown just to make them feel good? Let me drive home this thought to those who think the Patriots are running up the score in each of their games. It's not the Patriots job to stop themselves. That's the other team's job. They're not the one's who are supposed to stop playing. The other team is the one who has to start playing. This probably won't be a controversy next week though. The Patriots will win, but if they blow out the Colts I'll be shocked. The Colts or Patriots will win by either 3-10 points.

 Re: 2007 NFL Discussion
I agree wholeheartedly!
I mean... on the Washington 7, Fourth and 1... if they kick the field goal, then they still get blamed for running up the score.
Also, running plays are FAR more dangerous than short passing plays, which is what the Pats did most of the 4th quarter. So they played it as safe as possible.

Also, I do believe Brady's last TD was their ritual F-U TD. It's the greatest thing EVER.

 Re: 2007 NFL Discussion
People seem to forget that Indy was beating up on the Saints in the opener and scored 17 4th quarter points!
Talk about running up the score!!!

Sammy Morris out for the season.
NE's probably still the best team in the league, but going undefeated just got a lot harder.

Is that a joke? 1st of all, with the exception of this week and vs. Pittsburg, Pats dont even need a legit running game anyways. 2nd, Maroney is 100x as talented as Sammy Morris. If he stays healthy for a full season hed be top 10 in league; if stayed healthy as a feature back hed be top 5. Hes been averaging 5.3 yards per carry since he returned, whats not to love?

 Re: 2007 NFL Discussion
I have no problem with New England playing aggressive with a big lead. Few people remember who wins the Superbowl each year. But people will remember this year's Patriots should they avoid major injuries and go all the way. And they'll be remembered because of their TOTAL dominance.

 Re: 2007 NFL Discussion
The NFL Countdown on ESPN is ridiculous. First overweight, 100 year old coaches walk on a mock playing field and try to play formations, then Mike Ditka advises a kind that running up the score is bad. (Wonder if they'll put up an insert during the next game the Patriots win with a blowout that reads "Don't try this at home, kids")

Quote: Brady was asked if the matchup deserves the hype.
"I hope so," he said. "I hope it's a blowout, actually. I'm sure nobody else would like that."

 Re: 2007 NFL Discussion
Looks like the Pack may have the beginnings of a running game now. Grant's running pretty well early. Now if they just stop turning the ball over on the opponents side of the field...

 Re: 2007 NFL Discussion
I'm 50/50 on the call to go for a first down with :35 left in the half. But for crying out loud DON'T FORCE IT AND THROW A PICK THAT GIVES THE OTHER TEAM A CHANCE TO SCORE

That was an AWESOME one-handed catch by Driver to set up the FG to take the lead. Now the Packers D need to totally shut down KC and finish the job.
