Re: The Tennis Thread - Wimbledon Open '11
Too bad for Na but I wasn't expecting much on grass.
I'm happy that the sisters are playing again. Venus has a dream draw now if she doesn't blow it. Serena has the more difficult side yet she's looking good going into the 2nd week.
Andy lost but what else is new. The top 4 men are all very good but I like the way djokovic and federe are playing here.

Re: The Tennis Thread - Wimbledon Open '11
Roger just lost a 2 set to none lead for the first time in 179 grand slam matches. I think this is the breaking point. I think he'll win just one more major now. Now that he's losing on Wimbledon in the quarters and no chance at the French, I think it could be a while before he gets that next major.
However, now that he is out I can root for Andy so we can finally not have to hear Britons wish for a Wimbledon champion anymore should he win.
If he goes down, I'll root for Djokovic.

Re: The Tennis Thread - Wimbledon Open '11
The only thing in murrays favor is that he's a very good player at 24. Right now he's not very good competing in the big matches. Watching this match, over and over again he would blast forehands what seemed like 5 feet beyond the baseline. Too much over hitting and at timed he'd do this when nadal was completely out of position. I do think Andy will eventually get a Wimbledon title even if it's a goran ivanisevic type win many years down the road. One thing he might consider is no family or friends in his box, just his coach.
For the finals, I do like nadal but I'm going to go with djokovic due to his head to head this year, his quality play and control this year and he believes he can win which is one additional thing I think Murray lacks in this big matches.
Novak in 4
For the ladies, I'll root for sharapova even though she's a screamer.

Djokovic is looking fantastic. Federer is looking good as well. The tourney is Serena's to lose. It's amazing and I hope she can do it.

Re: The Tennis Thread - U.S. Open '11
Glad Caroline was able to make a comeback yesterday. I liked both players but I wanted Caroline to win it. Unfortunately she's in the same draw as Serena and if they play I'm rooting for Serena even though I want Caroline to get that first major.
As for the men, there are alot of good matches today. I'm more accepting now of Isner as a tennis player even though he's a giant. He's a thing to watch at the net. Young doesn't seem to have any power weapon to really compete though. Roddick is his usually hat wearing self. he has a tough contest tonight.
Oh, Mardy should never have complained about the player box. I thought it brought unnecessary attention to something he didn't need to think about but maybe he was still on his way to losing regardless.

Going to be a fantastic day tomorrow: men's semifinals between the top 4 seeds, and the Caroline/Serena matchup.

This is make or break for Novak now. If he loses this, he will never get the respect of Fed and Nadal

Re: The Tennis Thread - U.S. Open '11
Great match. It's a shame to see one lose. Poor Roger. He'll have more chances but dang he let this slip out of his hands. One superior serve from victory is how I saw that.
Should Novak win the Open then I'd easily put this season above Rogers 3 slam years. Don't get me wrong. Roger is still the better player but Novak is having one of those dream seasons that very few players ever get a chance at doing.
Looking forward, I'd prefer Nadal as his opponent but Andy would be fine. They will both be difficult to beat. Also, guess I'll be watching the women's semis on usopen.org. Can't wait for that.

184 matches up 2-0 sets, 2nd loss ever, both this year. Tough year for Fed. Hope he can shake it off ok. Must have been worse against Tsonga.

Nah, I'll put it equal, but not clearly above. I think Roger making 4 Finals makes up for Djokovic's slightly better non majors winning if he goes undefeated the rest of the year, and I still don't think this has been as easy for Djokovic as Roger's seemed. The one thing I'll always remember with prime Federer is how it was a shocking, top of the hour news story on sports radio when he lost a match to anyone, it was like you just heard a story about a high school team beating a university or pro team in basketball or something
