Re: The Tennis Thread - U.S. Open '08
I can't believe that Nadal gave up that break.
Oh well, at least Federer should be able to win in 4.

He'll surely get to 14 now, he has at least one win left. Bit of an understatement, eh? He's still just 27 and has only 1 real true contendor in Nadal. Ya know, CBS flashed some stat he had where he was 100+ matches to 4 in the victory column when he wins the first set. Now, I know at least 2 of those are to Nadal. I thought that stat was pretty insane. Anyway, I'm positive he'll never win the French while Nadal's around but the other 3 are all fair game. Where will he end? 17, 18, 20 slams...

Re: The Tennis Thread - U.S. Open '08
Australian Open in 10 days.
Doha Open final is set with Roddick taking on Murray.
At this point I'd much rather have Djokovic in Federer's half than Murray, who has beaten Federer their last four meetings I believe. Federer looked kinda bad today, his backhand was a mess and needs to get that sorted out pronto.

Re: The Tennis Thread - Australia Open '09
Australian Open Main Draw comes out Thursday 6pm EDT (approx). I thought it may be neat to get a pool started with the few posters that make an appearance in this thread every now and again. I've used this site before, but only as a participant, never as a creator so we'll see how it goes. It updates everything automatically. I believe you just have to sign up and register for the private pool. I created one for the Men's draw and another for the Women's draw and you should be able to select your picks Thursday Night. Murray is hopeless at the Australian Open.
I see Federrer winning the mens.
and possibly Venus for the ladies

Re: The Tennis Thread - Australia Open '09
If anyone is thinking of signing up for that bracket on either the Mens or the Womens side, just an FYI the deadline in Sunday at 7pm EDT, when play commences.
I think one of the top 4 men take the Mens, and one of the Williams sisters takes the Womens title.

I'm glad Hantuchova won. The first set was pitiful though. typical WTA.
Ivanovic was awful today, but i think she will win her second round comfortably.
Solid win from Roddick today.

Re: The Tennis Thread - Australia Open '09
I'm super excited for 2009. I think for the first time in about 70 odd years a brit has a legitimate chance of winning a grand slam. I don't want to get carried away though as Murray's record at AO is dire, to say the least. Surely he has to change that though in his match against Pavel ranked 1,140 coming off an 11 month injury break. We'll see later tonight.
Women's side is wide open i think... i could see a shock winner out of nowhere this year, or maybe it's finally Dementieva's turn?

Re: The Tennis Thread - Australia Open '09
Well, Murray's through after Pavel retired but he was looking to be in cruise control so no worries there, I'd be shocked if he's not in the semis.

Federer has looked great the past two matches, especially the last one.

Dang it, I wanted Venus to do well in a tournament other than Wimbledon.

Federer v Safin will hopefully be a cracking match. Shame i'll be at work while it's on.

Good win from Federer, he played well, he usually does when he plays Safin.

It's not that Federer played good, it's just Safin was terrible. his forehand was really bad.
And I'm really happy for Jelena Dokic. I think she's a threat.

she's got nothing to lose. being out of the game for 4-5 years and ranked 180+ works to her advantage

Re: The Tennis Thread - Australia Open '09
Dokic is a surprise and could be dangerous if she just swings like she's got nothing to lose, which, lets face it, she hasn't.
Hoping for another Murray straight sets victory tonight, but he made a meal of Melzer at the US Open, eventaully winning in 5.

Re: The Tennis Thread - Australia Open '09
The more I see of Murray, the more I'm glad that he's on Nadal's half. That's gonna be an awesome semi assuming neither have any crazy lapses until they reach that point.
Great match from Gonzo and Gasquet, heartbreaking for Gasquet hitting 75+ winners and still losing...
ETA: And there goes the world's number one woman player. Jelena Jankovic loses 1-6 4-6 to Marion Bartoli.
