Quote:
Shrek is a 2001 American computer-animated fantasy comedy film directed by Andrew Adamson and Vicky Jenson, featuring the voices of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, and John Lithgow. Loosely based on William Steig's 1990 fairy tale picture book Shrek!. Shrek stars Mike Myers as a big, strong, solitude-loving, intimidating ogre named Shrek; Cameron Diaz as the beautiful, feisty, but very down-to-earth Princess Fiona; Eddie Murphy as the talkative Donkey; and John Lithgow as the villain Lord Farquaad.

Commercially successful on release in 2001, it helped establish DreamWorks as a prime competitor to Pixar in the field of feature film animation, particularly in computer animation. The film's success also made DreamWorks Animation create three sequels: Shrek 2, Shrek the Third, and Shrek Forever After. There was also a Christmas special called Shrek the Halls and a Halloween special called Scared Shrekless. Furthermore, Shrek was made the mascot for the company's animation productions. It was critically acclaimed as an animated film worthy of adult interest, with many adult-oriented jokes and themes but a simple enough plot and humor to appeal to children. It made notable use of popular music; the soundtrack includes music by Smash Mouth, Eels, Joan Jett, The Proclaimers, Jason Wade, The Baha Men, and John Cale (covering Leonard Cohen).

During June 2008, the American Film Institute revealed its "Ten top Ten"; the best ten films in ten "classic" American film genres—after polling over 1,500 people from the creative community Shrek was acknowledged as the 8th best film in the animated genre, and the only non-Disney·Pixar film on the top ten. It is also third on Bravo's 100 funniest films. Shrek was also ranked second in a Channel 4 poll of the "100 Greatest Family Films", losing out on the top spot to E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. In 2005, Shrek came 6th in Channel 4's 100 Greatest Cartoons poll behind The Simpsons, Tom and Jerry, South Park, Toy Story and Family Guy.

Shrek won the first ever Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and nominated for the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. The film was also nominated for six BAFTAs, including the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Eddie Murphy for his voice-over performance as Donkey, and won the BAFTA Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.

One of my favorite CGI movies. It's original and actually funny.

Changed the direction of children's movies. This made it possible for adults to thoroughly enjoy these animated features.

Meh, I never really got into this movie at all. The humor was really a long string of inside jokes and one liners by Donkey, with the actualy story line, love thy ugly duckling, being great for kids but boring for me. Not really as family friendly as everyone made it out to be, it was just more interesting than Barney. So by comparison was for mature tastes. Admittedly the jokes were mature (one point even being a bit too mature) but they weren't really grounded in larger, more complex humor. What this meant for me was that while cute, I was pretty bored. Even with Dreamworks pretending they beat Disney/Pixar (Toy Story) and Nickelodeon (Jimmy Neutron) to the 3d punch. C+

Awesome movie with hilarious one liners, memorable characters, and a great story. However, I like the sequel better.

This is the most overrated animated flick ever. I just don't buy into the whole "genious" of it. It is mildly funny, has some neat references and is throughout entertaining. Also, Eddie Murphy's donkey rules. Other than that, it is standard stuff. I just don't buy into most of these overdone pop-culture references. The movie is inferior to all of Pixar's stuff I have seen so far as well as inferior to Ice Age. I skipped on the second movie.

Hehe, this is funny. Looking at this thread, you see almost exclusively A's, but looking at the poll, there is only one A and the rest is all B's :P

What a great movie! Probably the best non-Pixar CGI to date. Now the second one, on the other hand, wasn't so great.
But I'll give this an A-

It's paled with time, but it's still funny and rather innovative at times. Perhaps a little too much adult humour for a kid's flick (case in point: the scene with Farquaad in bed after watching Fiona in the mirror) but it's a welcome change in animation and makes the movie that much better. It's all the little touches that make this film so funny, as the main story is rather derivative. Mike Myers is solid and Eddie Murphy is pretty hilarious, as are all the sharp jabs at fairy tales. Superb animation, too - the film looks fantastic. One of the better animated films of the past decade.

I gave it a C.

It was midly, midly amusing at times, but mostly I was just bored to death. I enjoyed John Lithgow as Farquaad, and Donkey was fun, but Shrek and Fiona and there "love story" went back and forth between annoying and just boring.

Love it. It was so refreshing. I remember seeing the animation, and being stunned by it. Love the Dragon.

B+

Shrek 2, however, didn't live up to it. Just felt that they could have done alot more with it. But instead, they are saving enough ideas to keep pumping out sequels.

I like the movie. It's funny. But I always found it a bit smug, and a bit annoying.

B/B+ or thereabouts. I prefer the sequel.

I don't have my original review for Shrek, but I wasn't a fan. Way too obvious.

Excellent! The best non-Pixar CGI film outside of its first sequel, which is even better. Everything here from the animation to the screenplay to the story is top notch. What Shrek has that separates it from other DreamWorks films are the truly wonderful characters. There are no characters quite as iconic from DreamWorks, even all these years later, than Shrek and Donkey. Watching it today, there is still stuff I pick up on that I never realized before. Still firmly in the Shrek>HTTYD camp.

A+
