 One Night in Miami  Quote: One Night in Miami... is a 2020 American drama film about a fictionalized meeting of Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, Jim Brown, and Sam Cooke in a Miami hotel room in February 1964, celebrating Ali's surprise title win over Sonny Liston. It is the first feature directed by Regina King, from a screenplay by Kemp Powers based on his stage play of the same name. It stars Kingsley Ben-Adir, Eli Goree, Aldis Hodge and Leslie Odom Jr. in the lead roles, with Joaquina Kalukango, Nicolette Robinson, Beau Bridges and Lance Reddick in supporting roles.
The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival on September 7, 2020, a first for an African-American female director. It was released in limited theaters by Amazon Studios, starting on December 25, 2020, before being released digitally on Prime Video on January 15, 2021. Reviews were overwhelmingly positive, with critics praising King's direction, the performances, and the screenplay.

Re: One Night in Miami This was good. I wasn't absolutely over the moon in love with it as it does feel a little stagey at times, but the performances are across the board fantastic. Kingsley Ben-Adir was the standout for me and I wouldn't be surprised if he got awards buzz. B

Re: One Night in Miami This was addictive when it focuses on conversation of these 4 characters and thankfully that's most of the movie. But once it tries to deliver these ideas to real life it becomes a generic BLM movie which is not as effective. The 4 leads are great in this and I do not think Regina King in her directorial debut is bad but I didn't find her work to be a standout as well. The fight scenes at the start were a little too comical and certain details are rushed. This is also very similar movie to this year's The Boys in the Band and feels similarly very play-like in nature though ofcourse the interactions here are much more focused and energy but the later had a better emotional punch in the end. I find both movies pretty much at similar ranking. I do not think this would have gotten this big of a praise if it was not Regina King's directional debut in current political climate.

Re: One Night in Miami The 4 leads are fantastic in this, but I found the second half of this film not nearly as engaging the first half when we got to see all these iconic characters really interact for the first time.
I didn't have the same complaints with Ma Rainy, but this felt a bit too stagey at times with those scenes in the Hotel room and BLM influence also took something away from it as well IMO.
Despite the direction being nothing special I do think Regina King did a pretty solid job with the movie overall, but I really think I would have preferred if it was just a movie that focused on the interactions between the main 4 characters instead of it being so confined to a single location.
