Quote:
The Others is a 2001 psychological horror film by the Spanish-Chilean director Alejandro AmenĂ¡bar, starring Nicole Kidman. It is inspired partly by the novella The Turn of the Screw.

It won eight Goya Awards, including awards for Best Film and Best Director. This was the first English-language film ever to receive the Best Film Award at the Goyas (Spain's national film awards), without a single word of Spanish spoken in it. The Others won Best Horror Film at the Saturn Awards, and Kidman received a Golden Globe and BAFTA nomination.

After hearing all the great things about it, I found The Others to be very average. C+

A horror movie that actually doesn't rely on cheap, cliched C-rate tricks to get its scares....

And it's scarier than just about every other "horror" movie in the past few years. Kidman and Flanagan are terrific.

Atmosheric and creepy, this really is an old-fashioned ghost story with a twist. Kidman keeps the level of intensity on high throughout the whole movie with her high strung performance. B+.

I agree with you. I saw The Others late into its run. While it's above-average, it's very overrated. People claimed it was, like, the next Sixth Sense. Yeah right. ;)

B-

Rod, you should just change your last name to Kidman.

A fantastic horror thriller with an Oscar worthy performance from the great Nicole Kidman.

I was a little too busy to fit this and Moulin Rouge in this week, so I'll be watching this tonight, and the Moulin Rouge tonight or in the morning. Owe late fees on these two. 8-[

Movies don't make me cry, and scary movies don't scare me, so what are the chances of me getting scared happening?

I'll probably get scared and cry like a sissy here, too

Libs, I'll try to get a review up before Desperate Housewives if I possibly can.

The Others reminded me of one of those low budgeted horror movies from the 60's and 70's starring Christopher Lee or someone. It doesn't rely on shock moments, it relies on mood, and it's a pretty creepy mood. Nicole Kidman plays the mother of two children (a boy and a girl) who move into an old house during WWII, while her husband fights. The children can not be exposed to sunlight, so the house is kept dark, and this adds to the mood effect quite a bit, and the house is never made warm and inviting to onlookers. The house also comes equipped with a strange 3some of servants.

The daughter talks to a boy named Victor , and the very thought of him frightens her little brother, because he knows there shouldn't be in little boy's named Victor living in their house. As the movie moves along, we discover that there is a family of "intruders". When the children's father showed up out of nowhere, I must admit, I just couldn't make any sense of it, and it made even less sense when he left without a word. Little did I know, huh?

As I'm waiting for the twist ending that I was told about, I just didn't see it, and when it was revealed that the servants were really dead, I thought that was it. A nice touch, but nothing that made me go... . It wasn't until Kidman walked into the room where the seance was being conducted by the "intruders", that I was completely caught off guard, when it was revealed that Kidman and her children were really ghosts, and the boy, Victor, was really alive, as was the family that he belonged to. Unlike the very predictable The Sixth Sense, this twist ending was well handled and caught me by surprise, even though I was looking for a twist ending.

The Others was eerie, moody, and tense, and I enjoyed it a lot. The ending alone elevates it even higher.

B+

I thought it was alright, better than THE SIXTH SENSE anyways.

8/10 (B+)

Well acted, gave me some chills. I found the twist predictable, though and not all-too original. Still a solid flick.

Hm... if it wasn't for Moulin Rouge!, Kidman definatly deserved an Oscar nomination for this.

Excellent film, to my surprise.

I don't care for Kidman but I liked her in this, she did a good job, and the atmospherics were well done, very suspenseful and spooky. B+ Also the kid actors were pretty believable and not annoying.
