21 Grams
21 GramsQuote: 21 Grams is a 2003 American drama film directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu and written by Guillermo Arriaga. It stars Sean Penn, Naomi Watts, Danny Huston, and Benicio del Toro.
Like Arriaga's and González Iñárritu's previous film, Amores perros (2000), 21 Grams interweaves several plot lines, around the consequences of a tragic automobile accident. Penn plays a critically ill academic mathematician, Watts plays a grief-stricken mother, and del Toro plays a born-again Christian ex-convict whose faith is sorely tested in the aftermath of the accident.
21 Grams is presented in a non-linear arrangement where the lives of the characters are depicted before and after the accident. The three main characters each have 'past', 'present', and 'future' story threads, which are shown as non-linear fragments that punctuate elements of the overall story, all imminently coming toward each other and coalescing as the story progresses.

Best film of 2003, just an amazingly powerful film. The 3 main leads give 3 of the best performances of last year, but the main standout it of course Naomi Watts... what a performance.

Incredible performances by Sean Penn, Benecio Del Toro, and Naomi Watts, but the jumps in storytelling were a little too disruptive. Too raw and brutal for my taste, but still very engrossing. I rate it a B+.

l was kinda disappointed...
watching it for the first time was really confusing....even though l kinda figured they were doing that whole "jumpy time/story changing" type thing it didn't seem to follow any real order...plus it just seemed like unnecessary - like it was only there to cover up a kinda bland story...
still pretty good movie....just not as good as l;d expected...
probably bout a B, B-....

Powerful and acted to perfection. But it's not a film I'd watch often.

Loved it. I've always loved Naomi Watts, and she's just amazing in it. This movie really got snubbed at the Oscars and Golden Globed. It deserves better!
9/10 (A-)

I liked it but I thought it was over rated. The acting was good but the movie its self was way to long and had to many blank soaces that should have been filled. 7/10

I completely agree. It would have been better in order.

I thought the random sequence was brilliant, gave much more power to the film. I would have still loved it if it was in order but the sequence it was in made it so much better IMO.
I bought the DVD a couple of weeks ago, I should watch it this week.

I also agree, and I'm a fan of non-sequential storytelling (eg: Pulp Fiction, Memento - here it was simply a gimmick to cover up for the slightness of the storyline. (I must say I did enjoy seeing Miss Watts topless though!)
2 out of 5.

I thought it was supposed to represent the chaos in the story, but maybe it's just me.

Great film. Naomi Watts was astonishing (had Charlize not been there, she should have won), and I thought Sean Penn was just as good here as he was in Mystic River, despite the fact it's more subtle here.

It's a great, albeit very depressing film. It is one of the very few movies that actually affected my emotional state even after having seen it. It is deeply sad, but moreso, it is just down, gritty and depressing. Nothing good happens in this film. It works well towards the goal it sets out to work towards. The only major thing I didn't like about it was the way the director told the story. I just can't buy into the whole editing style where you cut the film into pieces, mix it well and glue it all back together with no chronological sense. I just felt that this movie did it for the purpose of being just a gimmick.
As far as the acting department goes, this one was excellent, featuring one of the best cast ensembles to have ever been on-screen. Sean Penn is great, even better than in Mystic River. Naomi Watts delivered one of the best female performances in her year. But it is Benicio del Toro who steals the show with his gritty and raw performance. This is the role he deserved the Oscar for and not Traffic. He was, by far and away, the best supporting actor in its year.
The movie is depressing, but very well-made and acted. If it were for a better editing, this would have surely ended up with a higher grade. The same goes for Amores Perros, by the way.

Re: 21 Grams
The first 30 minutes confused the heck out of me, but once I realized it isn't in chronological order, the plot really grabbed me. It also features outstanding performances all around, some of the best of that year. The best of Iñárritu's films by far and the best use of jigsaw-puzzle style by him; to me, it achieved something that both Babel and Amores Perros failed. A-.

Re: 21 Grams
Watts would have been guaranteed the Oscar for this if it wasn't for Charlize Theron's rise at the last minute.
I have to re-watch it since it's been a while, but this is one of my favorites of all time (probably top 40)

Re: 21 Grams
Really fantastic stuff. It's very depressing but just as gripping. Watts is the true standout here as this may be one of her best performances period. The hospital scene alone after the accident should be enough evidence to how good she is here. Penn and del Toro are great as well.
