 Goodfellas
Goodfellas Quote: Goodfellas (also styled GoodFellas) is a 1990 American crime film directed by Martin Scorsese. It is a film adaptation of the 1986 non-fiction book Wiseguy by Nicholas Pileggi, who co-wrote the screenplay with Scorsese. The film follows the rise and fall of Lucchese crime family associates Henry Hill and his friends over the course of thirty years from the 1950s to 1980.
Scorsese originally intended to direct Goodfellas before The Last Temptation of Christ, but when funds materialized to make Last Temptation, he postponed what was then known as Wise Guy. The title of Pileggi's book had already been used for a TV series and for Brian De Palma's 1986 comedy Wise Guys, so Pileggi and Scorsese changed the name of their film to Goodfellas. To prepare for their roles in the film, Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, and Ray Liotta talked often with Pileggi, who shared research material left over from writing the book. According to Pesci, improvisation and ad-libbing came out of rehearsals where Scorsese gave the actors freedom to do whatever they wanted. The director made transcripts of these sessions, took the lines he liked best, and put them into a revised script the cast worked from during principal photography.
Goodfellas performed well at the box office, grossing $46.8 million domestically, well above its $25 million budget. It also received overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics. The film was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, but only won one for Pesci in the Best Actor in a Supporting Role category. Scorsese's film won five awards from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, including Best Film. The film was named Best Film of the year by the New York Film Critics Circle, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, Boston Society of Film Critics, Chicago Film Critics Association, Kansas City Film Critics Circle, and by the National Society of Film Critics. Goodfellas is often considered one of the greatest films ever, both in the genre of crime and in general and was deemed "culturally significant" and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the United States Library of Congress. Scorsese followed this film up with two more films about organized crime: 1995's Casino with De Niro and Pesci as mobsters in Las Vegas and 2006's The Departed with Leonardo DiCaprio and Jack Nicholson, which won four Academy Awards.

Best gangster movie ever. Nothing even comes close to this one. De Niro, Pesci, and Liotta are PERFECT for their roles.

What a Masterpiece. It's Scorsese, De Niro, Pesci and Liotta at their best. THis rivals the Godfather-trilogy as best mob movie ever made and is IMO superior thanks to the compelling screenplay that was inspired by the real-life-story of Henry Hill. How this movie could lose out against Dances With Wolves at the oscars is still a scandal... (A)

Great and very entertaining gangster movie with amazing performances by Liotta and Pesci. But The Departed is better. A-

Goodfellas is great, but was only Pesci's and Liotta's best work. Taxi Driver, Raging Bull everyone. I will admit that Martin did a great job making a movie that many people will not try to do because of the Godfather trilogy the movie is great in the fact that it shows the mob through real world lenses and not so operatic ( like the Godfather). Even though this is a great movie and fights for a spot on my top 20, Dances with Wolves and the Godfather Trilogy are better in my book...sorry.

Fucking brilliant. Joe Pesci was a force of nature in this movie and he had amazing support in Liotta, DeNiro, Sorvino and Bracco. The cinematography was stunning, the use of music was just perfect and that screenplay included some of the most memorable dialogue in cinema history.

Scorsese's best, 16 September 1999
Goodfellas makes you feel like you are watching guys that you know or knew. To this day, I have a friend that still talks like Jimmy Two Times. He always says things like "Nice Nice" and that was just a background piece in Goodfellas. But that is the point, all that is background is just as important as the main players and locales. It all paints us a perfect picture of what mob life must be like. And with all due kudos to The Godfather, but there is no other film that has ever made mob life look so real and feel so tangible the way Goodfellas does.
To say that Joe Pesci is the best part of this film would be to discredit the rest of the cast, but at the same time, you have to mention him in some way. His portrayal of Tommy is haunting. Here is a man that is so insecure and wants to be the top dog, the made man so bad that he can't decipher between what is a joke and what is disrespect towards him. Of course the scene in question is when he shoots a common boy for telling Paulie to screw himself after Paulie shot him in the leg. You would think the guy has a right to let off a little steam and vent, but Paulie is always looking for the diss. He is always looking to find some hidden gesture from someone that is putting him down. Even at the beginning when he is getting on Henri in the now famous " You're a funny guy " scene. He is kidding with Henri but deep down inside he is angry with him, you can see it and feel it. Joe Pesci gave the performance of his career and he richly deserved to win best supporting actor that year.
The story and script by Pileggi is sheer inside brilliance. You can feel the inside observations that no one can have except for a guy that spent his whole life on the inside. They ring so true and they get into your blood. From scenes like the fat guy running around delivering messages to the other mob guys because he doesn't like to use the phone to the scene when Henri, Paulie and Tommy have Billy Bats in the trunk but they stop off at Tommy's moms house for a late night dinner of pasta and such. They also have to borrow a sharp knife to finish off the guy in the trunk, but to his mom they have to cut off the hoof of a dear that hit the car. And the scene where Tommy does kill the young kid for joking with him and then Paulie gets mad at him, not for killing the guy but because he doesn't want to dig a hole tonight. There are so many tiny observations in Goodfellas that give it the authenticity it has. And it is a film that stays with you for years to come. I think this is Scorcese's best film and although I understand and accept why the academy awarded Dances With Wolves the accolades it did, if this film would have swept the Oscars that year, no one would have been surprised. It is a landmark film and I think it is one of the best films ever made. And again, taking no credit away from Coppolla's Godfather epics, but this gets inside the mafia on a deeper level. It goes one step beyond what Coppolla gave us, and for that Goodfellas should be remembered as the best film about gangsters ever made.

Don't ask me why, but I was somewhat underwhelmed. Don't get me wrong, it's a fantastic movie, but I strongly preferred Taxi Driver and... well, I dunno, maybe it's just the fact that I get sick of seeing the same story told so many times, again and again. Gangster rises up the ranks, hits it big, drama among the group, drugs get introduced, mess up everyone, fall from power, etc. It's a great film, but I just didn't love it like I really wanted to. A-

BRILLIANT!! An "A".. GOODFELLAS is clearly in the same league as The GODFATHER when it comes to Gangster movies.. I especially enjoyed the scene when Henry Hill hit that neighbor in the head with the butt of his Gun at his driveway, I counted 12 times..

The usually cheerful but in this situation downright creepy "Layla" playing in the backround during the montage of each person with ties to Paulie being found dead still sends chills up my spine to this day.

It's a fairly typical example of Scorsese's strengths and weaknesses as a filmmaker. Goodfellas has a gripping story (up until the airport robbery) and some great direction and music but these are undone by repulsively unsympathetic characters and a forgettable third act. On the whole I'd give it a C or maybe C+. Oh, and as for this 'best gangster movie ever' you must be joking (or at least not have seen many gangster movies). The Godfather absolutely wipes the floor with Goodfellas.

Second greatest gangster movie I have seen so far, just behind the first godfather. Deniro is a god, he is amazing in this movie. In my top 50, without a doubt. A

I think it was better than the Godfather (never did understand the appeal of GF, but that's just me.)
However, I liked Casino better.

Who would have thought that this movie and My Blue Heaven with Steve Martin were based on the same guy. This is a great movie, one of the best ever made, not sure if its Scorcese's best but it would be a good debate.

It was just a bunch of northeastern rednecks acting like yahoos. Trailer park trash without the trailers. No rooting interest, I hoped they'd all get gunned down. The acting was over the top and mediocre, and for some of them like Paul Sorvino it was just plain bad. Pesci was just doing his usual shtick he could do in his sleep. Some people like this movie because they see it as a guy's movie, it's like saying you like poker, instant "guy" credibility. But I call it as I see it, this emperor has no clothes.

PEOPLE Like this movie because it is an accurate portrayal as to how life REALLY is in the Mob and it really is like that cause my friend's wife is 100% Italian and the Old Italian way is very much alive and well and this sort of thing does exist.. Seriously, you don't fuc* with these people or you will end up with a bullet in your head and disappear real quick..

Then they should have made a documentary, sounds like what you really wanted. And yes I know that they are mean, but every region of the country, and most parts of the world has some sort of groups like that, of whatever ethnicity.
If you're impressed by that kind of stuff, go visit Neuvo Laredo, a few hours drive from where I am. I get a constant series of news reports about the ongoing bloodbath there.
