The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
The Hunger Games: Catching FireQuote: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is an American science-fiction adventure film based on Suzanne Collins' novel, Catching Fire, the second installment in The Hunger Games trilogy. The film is the sequel to The Hunger Games, and the second installment in The Hunger Games film series, produced and distributed by Lionsgate. Francis Lawrence directed the film, with a screenplay by Simon Beaufoy and Michael Arndt. Academy Award winner Jennifer Lawrence returns as Katniss Everdeen along with Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Lenny Kravitz, Elizabeth Banks, Stanley Tucci, Donald Sutherland, Toby Jones, Paula Malcomson and Willow Shields also reprising their roles.
Months prior to the first film's release, Lionsgate greenlit the second film and Gary Ross, director of the first film, was expected to return as director. However, on April 10, 2012, he announced his departure from the project due to the tight and fixed production and on May 3, Francis Lawrence was hired as the film's director. Throughout July and September 2012, the film's supporting cast was filled out, with Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Sam Claflin, Jena Malone, Lynn Cohen, Meta Golding, Amanda Plummer, and Jeffrey Wright brought in to portray key roles. Filming began September 10, 2012 in and around metropolitan Atlanta, Georgia before moving to Hawaii. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is scheduled to be released in IMAX on November 22, 2013 in the United States.

B+
Overall on par wit the first. Some bts were better (it looked a lot better), but it is obvious that there is some pressure to appeal to the Twilight-demographics. Lawrence has no chemistry with either Hemsworth or Hutcherson and all of their romantic scenes together don't ring true. The corny romantic musicduring those scenes is a little cringeworthy. Luckily that's only a small part of the film. Lawrence rocks again. Without her performance the film would be half as good. The action is somewhat improved here too.

The true question here is
Stanley Tucci screen time over/under screen time in the first film?

It was even better than I expected. Lawrence owns this movie.

It couldn't be more apparent that the whole love triangle bullshit was tacked on in the books too, and not something Collins was all that keen on exploring.

Well, chemistry (or lack thereof) are stll much easier to notice on screen than in a book. So it is a bigger issue in the film.

Re: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
It's good. Feels pretty short (the games themselves feel really short to be honest) for its 2 and a half hour length and it doesn't veer too much from the first one despite being much flashier. Cast is very good. Lawrence gives a better performance here than in the first, as does Hutcherson. Liked Claflin as Finnick (mmmmm) and I don't usually like Jena Malone but I enjoyed her a lot here. I think the first half was done better than the second half. For me it wasn't underwhelming or overwhelming, it just met my expectations.

Re: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
Very close to a perfect grade. This is SO much better and more polished than the first film. I loved that one but this just blows it away and the increase in budget is evident from pretty much the very first frame. Jennifer Lawrence is absolutely fantastic yet again and delivers one of the best female performances of the year, and the entire supporting cast shines as well. Sam Claflin and Jena Malone were both surprisingly great additions and I thought Josh Hutcherson was better than he was in the first film. Elizabeth Banks, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Donald Sutherland, Jeffrey Wright and Woody Harrelson are all great as expected. It's just an incredibly well-made and intense blast and the cliffhanger ending made me very excited for the next installment. The book that closes this series out isn't the best but I have faith that this team will make it into two worthwhile features. I think this is the best blockbuster of the year. A

Re: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
THG CATCHING FIRE
First, the previews that were before this film were some of the trashiest teen flick previews plus that I Frankenstein film. Lord.
Second, I enjoyed the film. I thought it was good and built upon the first. I didn't read this book unfortunately so I had no idea about the turn of events that happened at the end. It was quite surprising. I was happy to see Effie have a more interesting emotionally invested role. Haymitch was funny again and helpful. I think Gale is the odd person out. He just doesn't have much to do so far. Snow is evil as a character gets. He just doesn't know when to stop antagonizing Katniss. I loved the ultra evil eye she gave him as they did the chariot turn. I thought the arena was cool and the action sequences were nice too. I did think that some of Lawrence's acting at times seemed a bit fake/wooden but she did good for the most part. Overall, I was happy with the film and the only major thing that bothered me was how it ended. Apparently, I read a comment online that said the book ended similarly but they could have shown at least some footage of the destruction of 12 in this film to heighten the gravity of what happened when the tribute victors escaped. Instead of ending on a closeup of her and then dang THG logo on fire. That was a bit cheesy.
Grade - A

Re: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
The movie's ending and the book's ending are literally EXACTLY the same. And I thought it worked well the way they did it. Showing exactly what had happened at that point would have been overkill.

I don't remember the book that well but I didn't like how we didn't see young Haymitch and how he won the games. That would've been a great addition.

Ah, that's a bit disappointing. It's one of my favorite moments of the book as it gives Haymitch a little more depth and provides a key technological insight to how the Games work.
