Post Re: About Time
Just saw this at NYFF. Prefacing this by saying I'm a HUGE Love Actually fan, but I loved it. This movie was just so sweet. It's so good-hearted and genuine that it's next-to-impossible not to be won over by its charms. I really liked how the narrative mostly focused on what happens after the typical rom-com ending (the whole courtship between the main characters takes up maybe about 30 minutes of the total runtime), and also how it slowly revealed itself to be much more of a film about the relationship between father and son than anything else. The entire cast is great. I was so impressed with Domhnall Gleeson. He's effortlessly charming as the lead and I think this is going to be a breakout role for him. I really loved his character. Rachel McAdams has never been better as the object of his affection - she just immediately lights up the screen. I liked how her character was developed and they mostly avoided the tropes that characters like this she's played before have fallen into. I loved their relationship and they're really a screen couple you root for. Their first interactions feel very authentic and I immediately found myself invested in their relationship. Bill Nighy delivers a fantastic supporting performance too that's more tender than a lot of his previous outings. The three leads are aided by a great supporting cast including a hilarious turn from Tom Hollander. The movie itself is very funny and has a great, witty script with quite a few surprises in store. I would also say this is easily Richard Curtis's most mature film to date - it focuses a lot more on growing up and the importance of family than the 'love is everywhere' theme that's dominated a lot of his previous outings. The final scene between Nighy and Gleeson was incredibly moving - it made me tear up and I heard a lot of sniffling in the audience. I'd highly recommend this movie and definitely want to see it again when it opens. It's so lovely and enjoyable, and I think it should do very well over the holiday season. A

The R-rating is ridiculous by the way. Completely unwarranted.

My theater is having their first free screening ever for this on Wednesday night. I'm definitely going to go but am so nervous about when to get there. I don't want to go an hour only to have it at capacity and not be able to get in.

I believe an hour would be fine. This is not The Hunger Games or The Hobbit. I am sure you are more excited by the prospect of this screening than anyone else. ;)

But it's still a free screening. I'd expect a decent turnout.

Still, though, this is a low-profile film. And the screening is on a Wednesday night in suburban Minnesota.

depending on who is pushing it, that is, how many people know about it, an hour might be cutting it close. people flock to those things when they know about em, even in smaller towns.

He should definitely get there at least an hour early. Like it was previously said, when people get passes to a free movie, nobody really cares what it is. ;) I saw a free screening of The Sessions back in October and it was completely booked and the line to get in was long enough that everyone in line couldn't get tickets. The same with Silver Linings Playbook, Imagine Me & You and a bunch of others that I've been to. I almost always get there about an hour and a half early. Sure you'll have to keep waiting in line, but at least you will be able to get in and should get a good seat.

In other news, I'm also going to a free screening on Wednesday. Hoping it's good!

Oh this was such a wonderful wonderful movie. I had a big grin on my face pretty much the entire time. The romance worked really well as did the father/son, brother/sister relationship. A winner on every level with great, charming performances from everyone.

Yeah, definitely the best romance or romcom this year so far. Very lovely film. Bill Nighy is amazing again and the father/son relationship is the film's core.

Post Re: About Time
Before one of the biggest plot holes I have seen on film, I was honestly loving this but...

Spoiler: show
In the middle of the film, Tim's sister is in a car accident. She was driving drunk because of a fight she got into with a friend. He decides to take her back in time with him so she never meets her boyfriend. When he comes back to present day, his daughter (who is only six months or so), is actually a boy. He finds out that he can't go back into time before his children are born because the one sperm is so precise that it is impossible for them to have the same child twice.

Cut to the end of the film. Tim's father died of cancer. Tim's wife wants a third child. He says he isn't sure if he is ready for another child (though it is because he isn't ready to not go back in time to see his dead father). She gets pregnant and right before she goes into labor, he takes one last trip to see his father. His father realizes this is it and Tim explains she is ready to have the baby. His father says "I know it bends the rules, but if we don't see anybody, we can do it" and they go back into time when Tim was a child and they run on the beach.

According to his father earlier in the movie, you can't (under any circumstances) go back into time before the child was born. Yet they went back into time to when he was a child and when he came back to present day, his children were still his normal children.

I mean... I know in time travel movies there are going to be plot holes, it is kind of expected to not think too much about things but give me a break. It was so ridiculous and clearly there to only make the audience cry.

Still though, I did enjoy the movie. It had solid performances and until the last 20 minutes I was honestly loving it but that just went too far into melodrama and ridiculousness that I couldn't take it seriously.

7/10

Post Re: About Time
After "About Time" I think Richard Curtis (Love Actually, Bridget Jones's Diary, Four Weddings & A Funeral) may just be the best in the business when it comes to romantic comedies. There's only one I wasn't crazy about (Notting Hill) and I think a re-watch of that may be in order as I was really young when I saw it. The others would be favorites of mine.

"About Time" is beautiful and hit all of the right notes for me. It has a great message. Domhnall Gleeson is perfect as Tim. Really charming and loveable. Matching him perfectly is Rachel McAdams. The two have great chemistry. This is one of her best performances as well. The always likeable Bill Nighy is terrific as Tim's father. Their relationship is so moving. Made me want to give my father a hug.

This is a total crowd-pleaser. A delightful film about love and life. Call me sentimental but this film is my favorite so far this year. I'll be seeing it again when it's officially released and highly recommend it. The ads for the film don't do it justice.

9/10 (A)

And really MPAA? You slapped this with an "R" rating? A couple of "F" words and a picture of breasts in the background is it. This should have been PG-13. Crazy you have to be 17 to see this. LOL.

Indeed. I was outright shocked to read this is rated R.

And you should really watch Notting Hill again. It's like the best rom-com of all times.

btw, change your signature.

To be fair, Love Actually is R and that isn't even that raunchy either (aside from the nudity in the body double plot). It airs on ABC Family during the holidays too :P This is so tame compared to that movie though.

Love Actually is and will always be my favorite Richard Curtis movie/ favorite romantic comedy in general. But this is probably my second favorite of his. It's just so lovely.

Love Actually is a strange film in regard to its rating because it completely earns its R with the porn plot, yet it is such a gentle, goofy, sweet, etc. film, it is hard to regard it as rated R.

It's not porn - they're body doubles for a studio film ;)

Post Re: About Time
He has directed just a trio of films to date (though ones on which he only served as a writer, such as Four Weddings and a Funeral and the Bridget Jones films, are often also attributed to him), but Richard Curtis has established himself as one of Britain's best known living directors. One might describe his cinema as a bridge uniting Merchant Ivory and the American studio system: sentimental and eager to please outsize crowds, yet also tasteful and with an air of literate prestige. His latest and best is an amusing, but also sad romance with a subtle science-fiction twist. When he turns 21, the protagonist, Tim, learns he, as with every man in his family, can time travel, but only in reverse and only to points in his own life. His every experience is a first draft he is able to revise, and the film's central concern is the way he utilizes this gift to romance Mary, an American woman, with a few time-paradox complications and earnest tears along the way. She is played by Rachel McAdams, he by up-and-coming Irishman Domhnall Gleeson. Curtis understands his stars and uses them well, placing her on a slight pedestal upon which the audience can admire her down-to-earth beauty and soulful presence, and recognizing in him an anxious charm and comic timing in the vein of Hugh Grant, the qualities which turned Grant into an international star in the 1990s. Stealing his every scene and giving the overall enterprise an extra charge of humanity and humor is the always invaluable Bill Nighy as the time traveling patriarch, a role which deepens and comes ever close to the foreground as the film enters its second and third acts. I am not sure any other actor can so perfectly deliver biting, grumpy one-liners while still exuding an inherent and regal warmth. The quality of the performances and Curtis' gentle, whimsical touch help the heartily satisfying film sidestep a few potential problems, such as the questionable morality of time travel as a method of courtship (Mary is never aware of Tim's ability, and he uses it at one point to ensure she never encounters a handsome man she falls for in an alternate timeline).

B+
