 Kaze Tachinu [The Wind Rises]
Kaze Tachinu [The Wind Rises] Quote: The Wind Rises (風立ちぬ Kaze Tachinu?) is a 2013 Japanese animated historical fantasy film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. The film is based on the manga of the same name, which is in turn based on a short story by Tatsuo Hori, a writer, poet and translator from mid-20th century (Showa period) Japan. Kaze Tachinu is a fictionalised biography of Jiro Horikoshi, designer of the Mitsubishi A5M (featured in the movie) and its famous successor, the Mitsubishi A6M Zero. Both were fighter aircraft that the Empire of Japan used in World War II. Miyazaki said this will be his final film.

Re: Kaze Tachinu [The Wind Rises]
I just saw it at NYFF. The animation is absolutely breathtaking - the backgrounds are just gorgeous and it's almost reason enough to see the movie. As for the film, I liked it. It's not great though. The story starts off well but then becomes kind of a chore to sit through and eventually goes into a weepy-romance kind of territory that I really didn't like. I'm not a huge Miyazaki fan overall though so for the most part this lived up to my expectations. It's not family friendly at all like his past few offerings so I do wonder with the U.S. release if they will end up dubbing it or just releasing the subtitled version I saw. B-

Really dug this, the first half was paced just perfectly for me, the second half with the romance while not as strong was still a worthy parallel symbolism for his love of aircraft design,

Re: Kaze Tachinu [The Wind Rises]
With it's seemingly prosaic subject matter, The Wind Rises stands apart from the rest of Miyazaki's films. Yet on deeper inspection, it reveals itself as a true heir to his work. A slice of life examined closely for the magic that lies within. The late life reflection of an old man on the days of his youth, The Wind Rises is his most beautifully drawn and animated work of art. *A*
