Quiet, tense, and quite possibly the most beautiful film I've ever seen. Sandra Bullock is flat-out incredible and George Clooney brings a much needed warmth to a film that is by its very nature cold and isolated.

I could complain slightly about the obvious ADR to keep audiences up to speed ("We need to get here..." Three minutes later, "We still need to get here..."), but it's a minor quibble in such an ambitious piece of film. It's unlike anything you've ever seen. That shot of Sandra Bullock tumbling into space from the trailer? Now imagine it without lighting, Bullock merely a tumbling shadow amongst the stars. It's haunting.

Alfonso Cuaron just dropped the mic.

Just saw this tonight.

It's absolutely breathtaking; a singular accomplishment like TDS said. Best use of 3D I'm aware of (I can't imagine watching this in 2D), and Bullock's performance is really really impressive. Also Lubezki's long takes are as good as ever. It's ultimately a very simple film, but really such an extraordinary level of craft in every frame.

I think this is gonna be huge. I for one can't wait to see it again.

Yep, rather terrific. The first 20 minutes are just jawdropping.

I didn't like the vision with George Clooney, though. That was a misstep, IMO.

Loved it, because my response to it went: 'Jesus, really? The studio totally forced this on Cuaron. / There's no way this is actually happening. / They're really good together... / He's so damn likable. / Wait, no! Now I want it to be real!'

The moment the door opens without her helmet on you know it can't possibly real and yet by the time it ended I was totally going with it as if it were.

OK... so...

Dolby has a new sound system for this. Dolby Atmos, or something. It's supposed to be incredible. And my favorite theater with the largest (non IMAX) screen in AZ has it. Should I go see it there, but not in 3D... or wait until it comes to my local IMAX and see it in 3D?

I got tickets for this in IMAX 3D. It's a fake IMAX at my local multiplex but I was hesitant to do anything else.

This seriously may be one of the best movies I've ever seen. It's just jaw-dropping on so many levels and I can't think of a single problem I had with it. An astounding achievement for everyone involved, especially Cuaron and Sandra Bullock. A+

I just got out of seeing this in 2D. ... probably should've gone with 3D, not sure if I want to see it again. It's a good movie, just not as astonishing as the praise it's getting. (but then again I didn't view it as it was intended but honestly 3D doesn't do anything for me so *shrug* )Visually it's excellent and Sandra Bullock probably should've won an Oscar for this instead of BS.

I'd argue it's a film that demands the most immersive viewing environment possible.

Notwithstanding the 3D, I also loved the sound design of this movie. The tense musical cues and fittingly eerie score juxtaposed with the muted sound effects of space wreckage results in truly jarring audio.

Post Re: Gravity
As a technical achievement, I would not hesitate to describe Gravity, the hour-and-a-half story of two astronauts adrift in space and fighting to survive, as a major film and perhaps even a masterpiece. The depiction of space, including the zero-gravity physical experience and the isolating absence of sound, is often awe-inspiring and haunting, doing for the cosmos what Jaws did for the water, and the film's utilization of 3-D is among the most detailed and tasteful of the modern era, on par with Avatar, Hugo, and Life of Pi.

On other levels, though, I must deviate from the crowd of people championing the film as one of the year's best and brightest because, in my estimation, it falls short in its storytelling and dialogue. The choice to present the disaster and adventure in close to real time is an intriguing gambit, but it also results in a script which tries far too hard to force the audience to sympathize with the two main characters: one is too broadly conceived as a salt-of-the-earth man's man, complete with corny one-liners and this-one-time-in-a-bar style anecdotes, while the other has a tragic personal history so sentimental it could send diabetic moviegoers into a sugar induced coma. A wiser film would have either devoted more time to establishing the characters and their journeys or simply trusted in the audience to sympathize with them because they are humans in peril in an inhospitable environment. Crowding the film's relatively few minutes with gaudily, noisily insistent character development does not fly.

Also, despite the fact it is clearly devised as a nonstop tension machine and spectacle, I began to found the repetitive and schematic nature of the plot (point A to point B to point C, each time with a nearly fatal disaster and then a miraculous save) a tad boring, and while I will leave it to the fine and furloughed people of NASA to decide how "realistic" they are, a few of the images, such as the use of a fire extinguisher as a tool of propulsion to navigate in space, do not ring true. Alfonso Cuarón is among my favorite directors, and he made one of my most beloved science-fiction films, Children of Men, seven years ago. It is clear he devoted a great deal of time and thought to high-end cinematic technology in the intervening years. A shame then he did not also develop a richer story with which to pair his big-budget space-camp vision.

C+

At one point, Sandra Bullock's character says to herself (paraphrasing), 'Within the next ten minutes, I am either going to return to earth or die in a fiery crash. It does not matter because either way, IT IS GOING TO BE ONE HELL OF A RIDE!'

Come on. ;) Groan. She might as well have just said, "I now understand how life is amazing in part because it is so fleeting and painful, but we can't give up the good fight" and winked at the audience.

Flat out incredible. One of the most awesome, wonderful, powerful cinematic experiences I've ever had. The 3D is just astonishing, really, and the film feels like the closest any of us are likely to ever get to outer space. Alfonso Cuaron should be commended on the sheer level of technicality present here. Gravity doesn't forget an emotional arc with its human connection, though. Sandra Bullock is one of my favorite actresses but what she does here is amazing. It's a physically demanding performance but also one of quiet reflection and heartbreak. George Clooney brings a much needed levity to the film in his much smaller role. I felt absolutely drained by the end but I can't wait to see it again. It's like one of the best theme park rides you've ever been on; except this time, the ride might win an Oscar (or two, or three, or four...). A

There are so many points pitched at, "HOLY SHIT! BOOM! CHAOS! EXPLOSION! DEBRIS! WHOA! THERE IS NO WAY SHE CAN SURVIVE THIS! Oh, a miracle, she survives." What should be, I don't know, a story of the human ability to, through courage and ingenuity, survive in extreme conditions almost becomes the most proficient live-action episode of Looney Tunes ever.

Sorry but this reads as complaining for the sake of complaining. If they had followed your advice, the movie would not be as exciting, it would not be as cinematic, and it would not be as well-received.

It is a genuine complaint. The film is sensory-overload relentless to the point of tedium. It loses the plot as a story of human survival and just becomes 3-D spectacle pornography, albeit of a very beautiful variety. I stopped believing I was watching human beings trying to survive using their knowledge and physicality. They just become avatars in a well-devised, but empty action maze. You compared it to a theme-park ride, ha.
