 Re: Seven Psychopaths
In a lot of ways it's McDonagh's Adaptation. - perversely autobiographical, deeply self-reflexive, and very funny. It's not as dark or meaningful as In Bruges, but still witty and well-written and thoughtful. Farrell is predictably great, Walken hasn't been this loose and natural in a long time, and Tom Waits is memorable in his too-brief role. And based on the opening scene, McDonagh is a fan of Boardwalk Empire.
Dare I say Sam Rockwell almost ruined it, though?

Not that bad. But he's definitely way overcooked here.

I thought this was by far one of Rockwell's best performances of his already impressive (and other times not...) career. I thought it was on the level of pure genius comedic insanity that Robert Downey Jr. had in Tropic Thunder. He is just so damn charismatic and is the true Psychopath in this film (along with Harrelson). My favorite Supporting Role of the year.

I suppose if you're already a fan of Rockwell, this is just more of the same. But I've never liked him. The only film I found him even tolerable in was Confessions of a Dangerous Mind.

 Re: Seven Psychopaths
Each scene in this unusual and wonderful film is a gift to the audience. In the spirit of Adaptation. and The Cabin in the Woods, the film plays as both an ode to and deconstruction of its targeted genre: super hip, super violent, dialogue-driven crime comedies such as Pulp Fiction and Snatch. It is an intricate novel of a film, often defined by details and diversions, but it never loses its grip. Even perceived shortcomings are part of the film's clever and deliberate fabric: the one-note nature of the female characters (girlfriends and wives and victims), for example, becomes a source of biting and honest humor. The entire cast shines, no doubt enlivened and inspired by the colorful characters and fast-paced, profane, and thoughtful dialogue. Best, though, is its ability to navigate (with awe-inspiring ease) major tonal shifts, from absurd humor to bracing violence to tender drama and so on and so forth. This is one of several qualities shared with In Bruges. One of the year's finest films, and a film I am certain will reward careful repeat viewings.

 Re: Seven Psychopaths
i thought it was allright, but at the end this was just an exercise in pure silliness, the comparisons to kaufman are ridiculous. the middlebrow-audience i saw this movie with really seemed to enjoy it and were chatting about some of the gags after the movie ended. at least it was much better than the intolerable in bruges.

Seven Psychopaths
It was very good and quite a smart movie, but I've not yet had enough time to think about how smart it really was. It might have fooled me more than it is actually clever. Either way though, I loved Sam Rockwell's character, what a blast. Colin Farrell is good here but his character's a bit of a saint. The violence is great and Woody Harrelson has just been on a terrific run recently of great roles that he just throws himself into. I'm becoming a huge fan of his (much more than his younger days when he was largely in shit). Olga Kurylenko is sexy, but her role is no more than a cameo. Walken is surprisingly pleasant to watch, another actor that I've never truly liked. It was a great ride with many references to screenwriting that were taken on board with the film itself, and I love movies like that. I even waited right until the very end of the credits to see if there was indeed a message for Zachariah, but there wasn't, so the film didn't mess up and it kept it true.
I'm torn between a B+ and an A-.

 Re: Seven Psychopaths
The advertising for this film was fairly deceptive in certain respects, including indicating two of the psychopaths are the characters played by Abbie Cornish and Olga Kurylenko.
Anyway, one of my twenty favorite films of last year. A colorful, profane, violent, and zany to Adaptation. I hope it pulls a few nominations at our in-house KJ awards. I nominated it for Best Comedy, Best Ensemble, and Best Original Screenplay.

I never expected to like it as much as In Bruges, and I didn't, but this was still a really good film. The standouts were definately Walkens and Harrelsons performances for me. And this is probably last years funniest movie.

It is quite good (funny I was the only critic at my screening who didn't hate it, though....seriously, the hell?), but In Bruges is better.

Just saw it today, agree that it's better than Argo and would've voted for it in several categories had I seen it earlier.

 Re: Seven Psychopaths
Just rented this and loved it! Such an odd premise, but it definitely works. Great acting all around, though not out of this world. Just standard good performances from a very good cast. I think the ending conversation was very well done and summed up the movie.
