Re: Sleepwalk with Me
A nice, modest, moving film. There is a definite Woody Allen (Annie Hall/Manhattan era) quality to stand-up comedian, lead actor, and director Mike Birbiglia; he may just be playing a version of himself, of his popular on-stage persona, but he is charismatic and engaging, and one can't help but relate to him and his anxious experience of life. The other performances are also solid. The first act's failed stand-up sequences are as painful as they should be, and the protagonist's later acquisition of a certain renewed confidence is almost rousing. The central relationship shared by Birbiglia and Lauren Ambrose's characters rings true. My one significant complaint: it's too short, and the ending (which comes after around 70 minutes) is a tad abrupt. I believe the film could have gone further in exploring certain thematic avenues and even individual moments. Still, the picture is worthy, and I am eager to see where Mike Birbiglia's film career goes next.
Birbiglia should have filmed the years-later meeting between he and Lauren Ambrose's characters, not just described it in the past tense.

It's a light, entertaining comedy. Nothing more really.

Weird, I thought I posted my thoughts on this before.
I saw this in theaters and absolutely adored it. I just watched it again on Netflix and it is such a wonderful, charming film. Definitely one of last years best.
9/10
