The Grudge

Quote:
The Grudge is the 2004 American remake of the Japanese film Ju-on: The Grudge, and the first horror film in the Ju-on series, Ju-on 1. The film is the first installment in the American horror film series The Grudge. The film was released in North America on October 22, 2004 by Columbia Pictures, and was directed by Takashi Shimizu (director of the original series) while Stephen Susco scripted the remake. In the same tradition as the original series, the plot of the film is told through a non-linear sequence of events and includes several intersecting subplots.

The film has spawned two sequels: The Grudge 2 (which was released on October 13, 2006), and The Grudge 3 (which was released on May 12, 2009).

HOLY SHIT! Those were my exact thoughts leaving the theater tonight. Folks, this is, hands down - the scariest film i've ever seen in a movie theater. Does it have a good plot? Absolutely not. Does it have good character development? Hell no. But you know what, that is clearly not what this movie is about. If you go in expecting what is essentialy an anthology film focusing around one house and the vengeful spirits within, you'll have a complete blast. You guys, this movie is truly, honestly frightening. It's not really the kind of frightening that stays with you weeks after the film. It's just extremely visceral and in-the-moment. I truly believe that the people saying it isin't scary are putting up a front. I am a 19 year old life long horror fan, and I do not scare easily. This movie had me cowering in my seat and totally dreading what was coming next. I can not recommend this movie enough. It's completely and utterly the perfect movie for Halloween. I would go into greater detail, but I really don't want to give away anything. This is a movie best seen with as little previous knowledge beforehand as possible.

That honestly was the scariest movie I've ever seen in my entire life, and I'm a huge horror buff. Everyone in the theater was screaming and jumping. Everyone. It didn't have much of a story or character development like said, but that doesn't matter really when it's terrifyingly awesome. I loved every second of it and I'm so going back to see it on Saturday with my sister, and probably again next weekend.

I could barely sleep last night thinking of that one scene in the bed.

Despite being a clone of The Ring, this horror film is not only great, but at times, incredibly creepy. The use of the boy, the croaking voice, etc. all worked incredibly well. The only thing it really lacks is a story.

But, it's the perfect film for Halloween. A

What a ride. Granted, I don't see many horror movies (at least in the theatre), but this is one of the creepiest ones I've seen in a while. The imagery (and the noises - oh, dear, the croaking...ahhhh) was sufficiently disturbing, and tension sometimes builds to an unbearable level. Despite getting top billing and having the most screen time of any character, Sarah Michelle Gellar's Karen seems to fade into the background at times. Gellar, who is usually charismatic and energetic, seems both tired and flat. The rest of the cast (including Bill Pullman, who provides the movie's first shock) is barely in the film enough to determine anything. Anyway, I thought The Grudge was a great scary flick. It's not great art (or as good as The Ring), but if you're in a Halloween spirit, this should do well for you.

I really enjoyed it. I know that this has been said, but i was actually scared at times and i see lots of horror movies. There were a number of times that i actually jumped. Even when i didn't jump there was just a general super-creepy feeling to the whole film. The characters are fine, what you would expect for a scary movie. This is a bonafide scary movie. Not much gore, but the jump scares are there and the super-creepy feeling helps the scariness factor along. I like the non-linear storytelling quite a bit as well. I am very happy for SMG, she is having a good year box office wise and regardless of what anyone has to say, i am sure that her name helped a bit. SMG has quite a lot of loyal BtVS fans that contributed to The Grudge's opening. I REALLY hope that The Grudge can pass 100mil, but even if it doesn't it is already a big success.

This is definitely, hand down, 100% the single most messed up movie I have ever seen. The story sucked, the characters sucked, questions were hardly answered by the end, but I'll be damned if it didn't creep the hell out of me. Now, you know the cliche "OMG LET HAVE SOMETHING JUMPO OUT OF A CLOSET AND TRY AND SCARE THEM" scare that studios try and use. They never scare me, utnil I say this movie. IT's the first time I've been genuinely scared in a VERY VERY long time. The use of the camera and sounds was very well done. But there's no possible way that the plot or the characters could have been better developed? None at all? I give it a B+ because the movie wasn't utilized to it's full potential, with the characters and plot and all. Still a scary movie, and if that;s what you like, go see it. Go see it right now.

B+

Do you know what the magical part of this is? Rarely do horror movies ever deliver on a plot that makes ANY sense. Nor, are they believable. Why? It's a freakin' horror movie! On horror movie standards, The Grudge ranks up high, but on all scales of film, the plot is subpar, like everyone has said. But, that's why this film is a horror movie, and not an arthouse flick. This is supposed to deliver on scares, chills, and thrills, and guess what! It does all of that. All characters take a backseat to the spirits/ghosts/GODDAMN scary things! I found myself jumping throughout this movie, and no other film has done that recently. Not even "Saw", but "Saw" is more plot-oriented and not exactly a horror film, per se. I think a horror film is when the "villian", if you will (not the best way to describe it) is not something that is real, in the real world. Horror movies are purely to suspend our belief, and give us some scares, without a plot to tangle ourselves up in. It's perfect in that sense. Horror films shouldn't have a complicated plot anyway, because that distracts from the scares, no? So, I think the film delivers on all fronts. Grade: A

I loved this movie. The characters sucked, but like everyone else said, the rest of the movie FREAKED ME OUT. I thought I was gonna shit myself during the **SPOILERS*** stair seen. When SMG and her BF are laying on the floor, and the woman is crawling down the stairs all fuckin creepy like!
good fun!!! scary movie!!

Very mediocre movie. I got annoyed at first by the false starts in the beginning but then it went on and on even in the middle of the movie. It got too tiresome. The plot itself looked like it was pieced together from plots from 6th Sense, Stirs of Echo and the Ring so its hardly original. Sometimes it gets confusing like when they have small flashbacks to Bill Pullman's character. Also my last complaint is that for a movie set in Japan, they do sure have alot of whiteys as the main focus of their characters  . Sure some parts were scary but it really doesn't make up on how cliched alot of parts of the movie was. A grade of C for me

Definetly had plenty of scary scenes, but lacked the storyline that the Ring had (to make a fair comparison). The ending was pretty lame and somewhat predictable, and seemed like an obvious attempt to leave a sequel wide open.

Oh well. Maybe I just had high expectations. Im going with a C- tops, Saw should renew my faith.

One of the most scariest films of the year! It made me jump about six times, and it creeped me out so much. The plot is very lackluster, but the basic elements of the story are well enough revealed, and I was satisfied. The acting was decent, but the standout was Sarah Michelle Gellar. I thought she was excellent in this! This movie has incredible pacing, it never drags, it never gets boring. Something that The Ring suffered from. I liked the whole premise of the film, and although the cursed house isn't all that scary, the whole concept of standing foot in the house, and you are cursed is just horrifying. I went to an Internet Movie Database Message Board, and I got a lot of my unanswered questions answered, so now that I know I appreciate the film even more. The director is very talented, and it was very good for a PG-13 movie, and they did a great job with what they had. Clea Duvall is underused in my opinion though. She is such a great actress, yet she only recieves about 10 minutes of screen time. There are some very scary moments, that made me want to look behind me because the theatre was dark, and it was practically empty, so I was a little cautious. Anyway, I would recommend this film to any die hard horror film buff. Although, its not as good as The Ring, it is still very entertaining, and worth a watch. I'm definitely buying it on dvd, and I hope that they make a sequel, because it can only get better from here!

Grade: B+

Had some really good scary moments. The plot was average, but the scares more than made up it.

I was really looking forward to this flick, and when I finally saw it, I was really let down. It had one really great moment, the elevator scene (the kid had no penis!!) and lots of terrible moments. The acting was terrible, and the movie was basically the same thing over and over, it was so boring

3/10 (D-)

Good concept, but lamely portrayed. I expect the Japanese movie is better.

Based on your top 100, I trust you. But is there any crucial reason why its bad?

It's not scary, it's very sloppy, and not well directed. That's just my opinion. The only thing that made this better than the American version is the fact that it has more gore, and that couldn't save it from the bad movie it is. C-/D+
