 I, Robot
I, Robot Quote: i, Robot is a 2004 science-fiction action film directed by Alex Proyas. The screenplay was written by Jeff Vintar, Akiva Goldsman and Hillary Seitz and it is loosely based on Isaac Asimov's short-story collection of the same name. Will Smith stars in the lead role of the film as Detective Del Spooner. The supporting cast includes Bridget Moynahan, Bruce Greenwood, James Cromwell, Chi McBride, Alan Tudyk, and Shia LaBeouf. It was nominated for the 2004 Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.
i, Robot was released in North America on July 16, 2004 and on July 22, 2004 in Australia. The film was later released in the United Kingdom on August 6, 2004 and in other countries between July 2004 to October 2004. Produced with a budget of USD $120 million, the film grossed $144 million domestically and $202 million in foreign markets for a worldwide total of $347 million. The most fun film of 2004, IMO. Just a great popcorn flick, and one of the best sci/fi flicks I've ever seen. Will Smith is his usual, awesome, entertaining-self, and makes the movie work. A

This was a fun movie, and something that Will Smith was tolerable in, unlike his animated adventure Shark Tale.

Entertaining. Will Smith is actually less irritating (thank god) and the movie is actually enjoyable.

It was pretty good. The only thing it really lacked is it needed to have a bigger cast and more locations, it felt a little cramped and small.
I don't know why Bridget Moynihan isn't in more movies like this and Sum of All Fears, she's really good in summer blockbuster types. I find her more appealing than the more famous Kate Beckinsdale.

Best Sci-Fi movie since The Matrix...maybe even Terminator 2. I liked it that much. WAY more than a normal action blockbuster that I was expecting.

I, Robot
A visually stunning film based on Isaac Asimov's ideas and stories of robots that showcases certain aspects of the great writer's theories of robotics, but lacks their zest and depth. The film asks questions that it does not allow itself to answer, and throughout seems too afraid to seek those answers, for fear that the action-loving audience will lose itself among the heaps of ideas that those answers would inevitably give rise to.*
The film is not necessarily a complete failure, however. It just means that it is not particularly original or daring. As entertainment, it is satisfying enough, but it's saving grace, and ultimate triumph, is Sonny, a brilliant creation in its (his?) own right. Sadly, the robot is a perfect reflection of the film as a whole; a visual feast at times, but ultimately hollow. A rather disappointing follow-up to Dark City from Proyas, who, if only he had been more faithful to the original material courtesy Asimov, could have given us another masterpiece.
C+
*Questions such as:
-Can those three laws of Robotics realistically be a proper means of maintaining the welfare of the human being, a creature that seems to almost go out of its way to cause harm to itself and other beings?
-Is the proposed concept VIKI was trying to work towards all that bad? It raises the issue of sacrificing some human beings for the sake of the greater good. It is not a 'good' solution in that it is morally justifiable, but it is a 'good' solution in that it offers a viable plan to deal with the sorry state of the human being as part of a social network.
- Are such things as 'feelings' and 'emotions' translatable and reproducible? Can a robot actually feel? There is something called a 'simulacrum' (and the term is used but never described in the film). 'Simulacrum' is when something which is meant to be an imitation becomes more real than that which it imitates. The robots, in other words, begin to seem more real or as real as the humans on which their design is based. Sonny of course is the best example of that. This problem was present in A.I. as well, but, like in I, Robot, was not properly answered. To say that an answer is crucial would be an understatement. If a film is able to provide a reasonable response, it's implications for an increasingly technology-driven culture would be nothing short of profound.

Heh, let's see:
Start with: A-
Subtract Shots of Smith's Torso: down to B+
Subtract Brief Shot of Smith's Ass: down to C+
There we go! I'm glad we found a way to agree

I watched it again on the DVD I got for christmas. Very underwhelming. Not as good as the first time I watched it. Still a visually beautiful movie, great action, and some good questions to boot.
The DVD itself sucks HUGE balls, but that's for another time.

It doesn't hold up on repeat viewings... at all. I swear, half my favorite movies this year I could watch on a loop for 24 hours (Eternal Sunshine three times, Garden State three times, Spider-Man 2 eight times) and some go down considerably on multiple viewings (Ju-On went from an A to B-, I Robot A/A- to B+, Dawn of the Dead A+ to B+ (the first time was an event, the best expierience I've ever had in a theater)).

More and mroe nowadays, a movie looses it's ground on repeate viewings....at least, for me. Very rarely do I find a movie that gets significanty better on a repeat viewing. Most recently it happened with Bourne Supremecy, which raised from around B/B+ to A+ territory.
But I, Robot definitely does not hold well at all against repeat viewings. Let this be a warning to everyone.

I agree, and I think it is because a lot of big movies are rushed out the door too fast now. If this had been polished more both in script and editing stages, it could have been a sci-fi classic. Some of the scenes even had that "first take" feel to them, as if the actors were unsure of themselves and the lines.
I still liked it, it was a good light blockbuster, but I agree it could have been better.
