Quote:
Ramona and Beezus is a 2010 Fox-Walden film adaptation of the Ramona series of novels by Beverly Cleary. The film's title derives from Beezus and Ramona, the first of Cleary's Ramona books, though the plot is mostly based on the sequels, particularly Ramona Forever and Ramona's World.

She's 18? She doesn't look it.

Anyway, the movie seems cute enough. Reviews are good.

B+, this movie is surprisingly good. I don't remember anything from reading the book from childhood so was expecting the worst.

Personally, as a self-confessed old school Beverly Cleary fanboy, I would have preferred to start from the beginning, with the film adaptation of Henry Huggins and work forward through the series.

...and if it were up to Hollywood, and it was just about making lots of dollars, they would have kicked it off with the big budget CGI Ribsy.

...but as it turns out, we are plunged straight into the rather intense world of Ramona and Beezus and their family.

This is one quirky family drama!

Sure, there's a deep vein of comedy and a splash of fantasy running through this movie, but the earnest drama at it's heart swings from a startlingly familiar dark night of the soul of a nine year old child - - to waves of sustained intensely emotional joyousness fueled by the bliss out finale.

Joey King as Ramona is astounding - - what a talent! Selena Gomez, in addition to being such an incredible and almost otherworldly cutey, turns out to be a convincing Beezus. Then, there's good old Aunt Bea, embodied by glowing Ginnifer Goodwin... lucky for Josh Duhamel's hottie Hobart! They are ably supported by John Corbett, convincing in the key role of Dad, and Sandra Oh in a small but delightful straight faced comic role. Less convincing but tolerable is Bridget Moynahan as Mom, but most miscast is Hutch Dano as none other than good 'ol Henry Huggins himself - - they needed the fake nerd hunk type (corollary to the fake nerd babe type (e.g., as portrayed by Rachel Leigh Cook in She's All That) which I'm sure Dano is doing his damnedest to emanate, yet just comes across as more of the real nerd wimp type.

Ramona and Beezus is really quite the journey! A rather stirring and surprisingly profound little glimpse into the life of a family. Frankly, it was far better than I ever dared dream it might be - - it's really quite fantastic!

27 out of 5.
