Quote:
The Men Who Stare at Goats is a 2009 slapstick comedy war film directed by Grant Heslov and written by Peter Straughan and released in theaters on November 6, 2009. It is based on the book of the same title by author Jon Ronson, an account of the investigation by Ronson and John Sergeant into attempts by US military forces to use psychic powers.

George Clooney, Jeff Bridges, and Ewan McGregor collide to make one of the funniest films of the year in this witty, yet very odd war comedy. McGregor's character Bob heads out to the battlefield to crack a stroy, he runs into Lyn Cassady (Clooney) who along with a group back in the 80's led by Bill Django (Bridges) were able to use mind tricks to advance in the war. Lyn has now been given a message to return back and Bob joins him on the journey learning on the way the past of the 80's group. The laughs are some of the smartest of the year and while the situation and plot is so out there, you still kind of believe it all to be true and just go with it. Kevin Spacey is strong as well though his character lacks a bit in comparison to the other three men. A wonderful joy to watch overall. ***1/2 (A)

The Anne Frank joke and Lyn's dad's comment on his dancing were some of the best comedic scenes I've seen this year.

EW gave this movie a rare F. Is it that bad?

Ya, that's pretty horrific from them considering they're usually pretty generous.

They gave O Brother, Where Art Thou? an F, too. They just don't share Clooney's sense of humor. :P

I thought The Men Who Stare at Goats was an enjoyable romp. It's definitely flawed--the film has no problem existing solely as a string of absurd action/comedy episodes for its first half, then suddenly chains itself to a specific narrative and confrontation and begins sending a sociopolitical "message"--but a top-notch, clearly-having-a-blast cast and sharp dialogue save the day.

Oh. I didn't know that. Well that eases my concerns of the F more now since I thought O Brother was a good film.

6/10 -> C

Overall the movie doesn't click quite like it should. By the end the story makes little to no sense or at least that's what it seems as the last third is a complete mess. Which is a pity.

It made me laugh a lot. But the funny scenes come off more like a sketch comedy show rather than a part of the big movie.

Great casting, especially with McGregor. He's great, but also Jedi jokes have another dimension to them.

Eh.

It was okay at best, not really funny and no point at all.

Wonder why the studio greenlit this.

Half-baked in its ideas, wildly uneven in its tone, and not really that funny in its jokes. Only the actors really make it worth it.

Grant Heslov proves he will never amount to more than "that brown guy in True Lies".

That's the sequel.

(BTW, I thought I wrote a review for this, but at any rate I was underwhelmed.)
