Quote:
Michael Jackson's This Is It is a 2009 American documentary–concert film directed by Kenny Ortega that documents Michael Jackson's rehearsals and preparation for the concert series of the same name scheduled to start on July 13, 2009, but canceled due to his death eighteen days prior on June 25. It is the last film Jackson starred in. The film is now the highest grossing concert movie and documentary in the history of cinema. The film consists of Jackson rehearsing musical numbers and directing his team, and additional behind the scenes footage including dancer auditions and costume design. The film's director Kenny Ortega confirmed that none of this footage was originally intended for release, but after Jackson's death it was agreed that the film be made. The footage was filmed at the Staples Center and The Forum in California.

Despite originally being set for October 30, the film's release date was rescheduled for October 28, 2009, due to a strong demand by Jackson's fans. The film was given a worldwide release and a limited two-week theatrical run from October 28, to November 12, 2009, but theatrical release was later extended. Tickets went on sale a month early on September 27, to satisfy a high anticipated demand; to date, the film has broken numerous records via tickets both pre-sale and sales worldwide.

Since the film's confirmation, AEG Live has faced criticism; mostly consisting of claims that they had only made the film to make a profit. Multiple members of Jackson's family had confirmed that they did not support the film and some family members went as far as to try to stop the film agreement in August. The film has also been surrounded by allegations regarding the appearance of body doubles in place of Jackson; which Sony denied, and an outrage from some of Jackson fans; with some going as far as to start a protest against the film. In August 2009, a judge approved a deal between Jackson's estate, concert promoter AEG Live, and Sony Pictures. The agreement allowed Sony to edit the hundreds of hours of rehearsal footage needed to create the film. Sony subsequently paid $50 million for the film rights.

The film was released to mainly positive reviews from both critics and Jackson fans; the film's portrayal of Jackson and his performances were generally praised, while criticism mainly consisted of both critics and fans having felt that the film was made just to profit off Jackson's death and that Jackson wouldn't have wanted the film released because he was a "perfectionist".

Despite some fans boycotting the film, and his family not endorsing the movie, This Is It ticket sales broke international records a month before its release. It has broken advance ticket sales records for a movie. Among the cities with the strongest sales are Los Angeles, San Francisco, Houston and New York. Records were also set in Japan, where more than $1 million in tickets were sold on the first day they were available. In London, fans bought more than 30,000 tickets on the first day. Record sales were also reported in Holland, Sweden, Belgium and New Zealand.

In the first opening weekend it grossed $101 million worldwide. The movie sold $32.5 million over its first five days in the U.S. and Canada, and $68.5 million in 97 other countries - making the number one film at the box office and making it the fifth highest-grossing Halloween debut. On its theatrical run, the film's worldwide revenue gross was in total $261 million, making it the highest grossing documentary/concert movie of all time.

The movie is also being sold as USB flash drive by Kingston with different capacities, first time ever in company`s history, according to deal done with Sony Music, as Limited Edition Version.

I had my fear going in, but it was all shattered. What a blast. This is a must-see for every MJ fan and even non-fans to understand why he was so popular and deserved every bit of the title King of Pop. A consummate artist, a perfectionist, and a visionary. The film is overflowed with his energy, passion, and dedication. If the rehearsals could be this good and engaging, one could only imagine what the concerts would've been. His voice sometimes showed his age, but his dance moves were not, at all. Also the young female guitarist was not just good looking, but crazily good with the guitar as well. Smooth Criminal segment is probably my favorite, but they're all very excellent. I don't feel the film is exploiting his death in any way. It's simply paying the tribute and gives fans something they deserve to see. A lot of applause, and many stayed all the way through the end credit. A.

Loved it :wub2: I'm a huge fan and I thought I would be let down but this was above my expectations. Had he lived this would have been a major comeback for his career. I definately could see myself paying $1000+ to have been able to see the completed concert live in person. To see the passion and effort he put in just makes you appreciate him even more. Title of King of Pop was definately earned. The sold out midnight crowd I sat with has to have been the most involved crowd I've ever been apart of. Lot's of "MICHAEL!" screams just like his concerts. Deathly silence whenever he spoke, singing and dancing along with the tunes, and applause with tears at the end. If there is one thing I would have liked to see them include and maybe they will on the DVD release is We never got a chance to see an angry/upset side of him, surely with a production this big, with as much rehearsal time he put in, and him being such a perfectionist you know their had to be some "Christian Bale" moments. A+

Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you the musical of the decade and the soon to be winner of this year's Best Picture Oscar:

Michael Jackson's This Is It

As the decade draws to a close, this late entry shoulders it's way past the pack on it's way to the post, passing such seemingly unbeatable fillies as Hairspray, Chicago, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Rent and even the previously unimagineably unassailable thoroughbred Moulin Rouge!.

This is a magnificent simultaneous performance and deconstruction of the art of show business itself. If I hadn't read differently in the newspapers, I'd have thought Michael Jackson choreographed his own death. The timing is exquisite! A master showman to the end.

THIS IS IT

I watched this at a 1530 showing yesterday. There were only probably 15 people in it as the film had been playing for about 5 minutes when I came in and the theatre was dark dark.

I enjoyed what I saw and it gave an interesting look into the making of a concert. I haven't watched many if any of those before so I'm a noob concerning that aspect. I really enjoyed all the dancing and liked the ideas they were using for smooth criminal and thriller. It was cool to see MJ singing his songs and dancing. I liked the reactions of the dancers during one of his dance performances. This was a really good tribute to him and I'm glad they didn't go into his death or show any reaction shots by the team of his death. The last moment is pretty sad too.

A couple other things I felt after seeing this was that I was angry about what happened to him. Just gone to soon and how his life affected all those dancers, sings, musicians with that concert and how those singers weren't bawling during his memorial shows great strength and makes me want to rewatch those videos again.

grade - A

Wow someone just wants to F the score on this movie, and I highly doubt they have even seen it. Can the Mod please either call out this person, remove the F vote, or maybe this A-hole can explain his/her reasons for giving this such a low score?

Didn't it used to be where you voted in a Poll and your username showed up that you voted?? If they still had this, you'd know who voted it.

Only an idiot would vote F regardless of the reason and I doubt it's anything sensible even if they did see it. Who gives a rip...

It's a very interesting look at the making of his concert during the last few weeks of his life.

Post Re: This Is It
9/10 -> A-

Michael Jackson still had it. More or less that is. But is seems that's it was rather more, than less...

I wasn't keen on seeing this movie, as I'm not a big fan of Michael, I find Thriller a heavily overrated album and enjoy Bad millions time better. But my friedn badly wanted to see this and I finally said I'll see it. I don't know what I think of Michael as a person (not that I particularly care much), but as a showman he was great indeed, as a celebrity he was a freak (the surgeries, the monkey, the baby over balcony move, etc...). He was many things at once.

This Is It doesn't do much to showcase him as a person (the short bits and pieces portrait him as a saint almost, which I can hardly believe and some of my doubts have roots in the way people treated him as was shown), but that's hardly the point of this movie. So I wouldn't call it a documentary as it's not really a documentary. I don't know what genre this is, but the point of the movie is to give a feel of what was supposed to happen and not really document and give an objective view of the things during the rehearsals which might have been the case if the movie was made after the successful shows. And a great thing was supposed to happen.

The moves - he had them (I don't think he was smooth as he once was, but he was old and didn't tour in more than a decade). The voice - he had it. Or at least that's what I think. On some songs he was brilliant, but there were some where he was off the ball (my personal favorite Smooth Criminal was among the iffy songs). That may be due to these performances being rehearsals as Michael points out a few times, but it might just be that he didn't have all of his voice. We'll never know.

The backdrops for the songs were awesome. They were supremely produced. The one I liked the most - Smooth Criminal. The interpolation of 40's noir/gangster movies with Michael was awesome. When Rita Haywort as Gilda started to dance on the screen I knew it was Smooth Criminal next. The Thriller one was great also.

The music sounded great. If only there were the mixes of the songs as in this movie.

I wouldn't mind seeing this again. It was very fun to watch it. I imagine the whole show would have been a true spectacle in every sense of that word.
