Re: Love Happens
It's exactly what it looked like. It doesn't try to be anything more than a romantic tear jerker. There are two distractions that keep the film interesting - John Carrol Lynch and Dan Fogler - but they aren't anywhere near enough to save the film. Lynch's character was the only part of the film that felt truly sincere. Everything else is pretty much forced, especially the ending. It goes all out on trying to get the water works out of you with the grieving hero reconciling with a father-in-law, mixed in with extremely corny use of pop music, to be capped off with a slow clap trying to make us feel all better. It didn't work.
And for really the first time I didn't mind Dan Fogler. With this and Taking Woodstock he's showing that when he doesn't try too hard to be funny, he can actually be a decent comedic actor.
I'm still trying to figure out why Aniston's character is even in the film to begin with. Outside of her being there to help him move on in the end, there's no other reason. I think it would've been more interesting if Eckhart's character had been able to move on with his life all by himself.
There are some good parts here and there (Lynch especially), but just watch the trailer and save yourself 100 minutes.

It's kind of lame. B-. I liked the OST. It's a mixed bag really, doesn't know what it wants to be.

C+
Jennifer Aniston really needs a better agent. This was not bad like Management or (supposedly) The Bounty Hunter, but it was absolutely generic and by the numbers. Aaron Eckhart and Jennifer Aniston had no chemistry and pretty much everything in the film was a cliché. But the filmmakers kinda managed to still make a nice package out of the whole thing so that it does work on an emotional level, in particular in the scenes with Martin Sheen and Eckhart. Those are the few moments in the film that feel really genuine.
