La passion de Jeanne d'Arc [The Passion of Joan of Arc]
The Passion of Joan of Arc Quote: The Passion of Joan of Arc (French: La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc) is a silent film produced in France in 1928. It is based on the trial records of Joan of Arc. The film was directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer and stars Renée Jeanne Falconetti. Antonin Artaud plays an important supporting role. It is widely regarded as a landmark of cinema, especially for its production, its direction and Falconetti's performance, which has been described as being among the best performances in film history.

Re: La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc [The Passion of Joan of Arc]
I can think of better non-English language female performances (among them Danielle Darrieux in Madame de..., Giulietta Masina in La Strada, Emmanuelle Riva in Hiroshima mon amour, even Carmen Maura's boy-as-girl from Almodovar's Law of Desire and silent's Louise Brooks in Pabst's Diary of a Lost Girl) but that's just preference and besides the point. Falconetti's performance is indeed among the all time greats and Dreyer's daring camera is something to behold. How he balances everything so perfectly is beyond me, when in fact a film so full of closeups shouldn't even work, let alone capture your emotions as powerfully as it does.

Why the non-English-speaking qualifier? I'd say it's probably the best female performance of all-time, period.
