So, so 80s in all its splendor. Sequel? Yes, please.

I thought it was an absolute blast. One of the most entertaining horror films I've seen in a long, long time. Slashers are my favorite kind of horror flick though so it should be expected, but it had a definite nostalgia factor that reminded me of various '80s endeavors and even the "renaissance" that the slasher genre had in the '90s with Scream and other films of that type. It's not great art, but it's so entertaining. Jaime King makes a great "final girl" and Jensen Ackles and Kerr Smith were both solid as well. It's stylish, well-directed and knows exactly what it is and what it needs to accomplish. I'd probably give it a B+, but entertainment-wise and based on how much fun I had this is an A all the way.

In short: bloody good effort, and one of the few remakes to double the Rotten Tomatoes score of the original. However, if this was my film, I would have moved one or two of the juicier bits into the final act. It seemed to trail off a bit.

For instance, visually speaking, I wish the whole film had been as eerie and stylish as the first few minutes. The combination of hospital lighting and crisp 3D really brought out the best in those bodies. Highlights included a hand dripping blood about three feet from your nose, and a heart drawn in blood on a mirror in the background (can you tell I was feeling the blood?). These were good, clever uses of the 3D. Sadly, many of the film's later scenes relied on old favourites like Spike Comes Towards Camera, Object Flies Towards Camera - the kind of 3D you get in a pop-up book. The best 3D creates real space, and makes the objects inside it emphatically solid. While the 3D in My Bloody Valentine was never poor, it was only really spectactular during that first scene with the bodies.

I'm not sure why I'm focusing on the negatives. I had a lot of fun, and really relished some of the murders (favourite has to be the shovel - shame they played that ace so soon, because it was brilliant). I was still guessing with minutes to go, and there were enough possibilities to keep me hooked. Also, there were some great lines of dialogue ("Stop yelling at me!" and "I'm gonna rip your fucking head off" raised a chuckle).

The first death was unexpected and completely fantastic. But there it is again: "first murder." The film peaked too soon, leaving us to sit through a solid, engaging, but (in comparison) slightly underwhelming second half. I would have held back maybe one or two of those aces.

All in all, a fun afternoon and a good solid B, but not quite up there with my favourite modern horror movies. For info, those are three films that completely and unexpectedly wowed me: Jeepers Creepers, House of Wax, and House of 1000 Corpses.

Hmm, maybe I need to rewatch it. Perhaps it was so bad that I entered a fugue state and convinced myself that I'd actually seen something really clever and original.

If you'd said, "All three of those films are shit," then I could have written it off as you having different tastes to me. But clearly there's some overlap in our tastes, so perhaps I was in a weird mood when I watched it the first time.

It's not terrible (House of the Dead came out the same year...yikes), but I think it's pretty bad. That said, I'm also not a fan of Rob Zombie's work in general, so yeah.

It's a fairly decent throwback - nothing more, nothing less.

Lussier certainly understands the slasher aesthetic and what makes it tick, but he never makes an attempt to elevate it in anyway, or do anything especially interesting. He lets the (sometimes hilarious and entertaining, sometimes awful and boring) 3D do all of the heavy lifting, and as a result the movie is bathed in dull lighting and pedestrian camera work. There is some real dynamite stuff (not necessarily involving 3D, interestingly enough) in the final ten minutes that, if worked through the rest of the movie, really could have taken it to somewhere exceptional.

I'd actually be curious to see this in a standard, 2D format. This was my first "RealD-3D" experience, and while it was certainly something, it mostly felt artificial and cold. I found it somewhat difficult to really get into the movie when absolutely everything - people, trees, water, cars, buildings - was in 3D. It was very detaching and super-obvious.

It was awesome, i jumped like a bitch, it was just a by the numbers, throwback, slick, stylish, fast paced slash n dash. I loved every second and it flew by. Not once was i bored or getting ass-ache. Jensen is gorgeous, Jaime is a solid heroine, the deaths were so detailed and gruesome. I loved it. I wanna see it again.

Would be interesting to see it in 2D now too.

So I had to watch in 2D as I didnt see the sign for it until after I bought the tickets realizing that was the only format here, its still a well put together horror film with a lot of jumping moments, cool kills, and a lot of humor and bad acting thrown in for good measure. Other than the stupid late 90s-early 00s ending it was very entertaining, though I kept going to myself dam that would have been awesome in 3D.

Solid B (Fun time at the movies, based on the movie though, not the effect)

On DVD it will surely come on a flipper disc with 3D on one side, 2D on the other. Journey 3D did. I assume Fly Me to the Moon did as well because otherwise it wouldn't be able to be rented.

If I was rating My Bloody Valentine on how "great" of a movie it was, I'd probably give it one of the worst failing ratings ever created because truth be told, it's not a good movie. Not in the slightest. But here is the thing, I don't think I've ever had such a great time watching a movie. The entire thing was just so hysterical. The script... it was so ATROCIOUS. But that's the thing... it was all intentional. It all worked so perfectly. It was a great throwback to the really bad horror movies of the 80s and I loved every fuckin' second of it. The 3-D was also great in it (the part where he was looking in the mirror and the heart was in 3-D... thats badass). All in all... I had a blast with this film and there isn't anything else to say about it. It's a funny, gory 'ol time and I'd recommend it to anyone who is a fan of the genre.

Were people laughing/screaming a lot at your showings? It was constant at mine. When Kerr Smith was fast-forwarding and rewinding the hotel tape, I couldn't hear the dialogue so many people in the theater were laughing.

Really though, this movie is just a warm-up for Final Destination 4. Imagine how awesome that will be in 3-D!

Ya know, 3D aside, this film still kinda kicked ass. As already mentioned, it's a great throwback to 80s horror, and all the corniness, abuse of blood/gore and random nudity is intentional and welcomed. Like, as soon as the cop in the beginning declared to the dead body, "Happy Fuckin' Valentine's Day," I loved it.

Add in the fact that it was in 3D?! FUCKING AWESOME!

First real 3D experience outside of an IMAX movie (and Spy Kids 3D: Game Over on DVD, shhh), so I might be biased, but I loved it.

It was nearly sold out at 4:40 in a 289 seat theater, and there was LOTS of laughing and a bit of screaming.

Most absurd moment was the midget's death, everyone laughed out loud.

This movie was so much fun. It was scary but funny, and not unintentionally. It's a lot like Scream, but a lot more fun. I thought everything was actually really well done, hiding the identity of the killer, etc... All the deaths were awesome and I would welcome this as a yearly tradition. B+, a lot of fun.

I enjoyed Valentine 3-D, but have seen a lot better purposely bad horror movies before. It only gathered a C+ grade from me, in being that I can just barely recommend it.

MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D (2009)

This was the first movie I'd seen in 3D on the big screen, and for the most part it was pretty cool. I wasn't really letdown by the 3D aspect, but the movie itself is just your average slasher flick that wouldn't be nearly as cool in 2D. Even with the 3D I found it to be a little too unexciting at times. It certainly started with a bang, and the coolest thing in 3D may very well have been the Lionsgate logo before the movie. That was simply AWESOME! Then there was a really cool part with a hand dripping blood what seemed like just a few feet in front of you, and the bullet coming out into the audience. The highlight of the movie was probably the bit at the motel. The nudity was hilarious in this scene (it's surprising they got away with such long shots of full-frontal nudity in an "R" rated film) and I feel bad but this movie made me laugh at a "little person." This whole bit was a lot of fun. But after this a lot of it is downhill. There was just too much downtime. It worked best when it was using all of those old horror cliches and having fun being bad. The dialogue and stuff was bad, as was the acting by some of the bit players. This made it kind of fun, but it wasn't as much of a blast as I thought it would be. I kind of thought it might be entertaining on the level that "Freddy vs. Jason" was. It was definitely an experience and overall a solid time that I wouldn't have wanted to miss on the big screen, but it could have been better. I can't see it having much rewatch value, especially when it's in regular 2D.
