 The Unborn
The Unborn Quote: The Unborn is a 2009 American supernatural horror-thriller film written and directed by David S. Goyer. The film stars Odette Yustman as a young woman who is tormented by a ghost (a dybbuk) and seeks help from a rabbi (Gary Oldman). The dybbuk seeks to use her death as a gateway to physical existence. The film is produced by Michael Bay and Platinum Dunes. It was released in American theaters on January 9, 2009, by Rogue Pictures.

 Re: The Unborn
So minus like one scene that managed to make me jump a bit (totally didn't see it coming, I swear!), this isn't as scary as it looked. At points, the "horror" scenes were so ridiculous-looking and random that I mostly laughed.
And it's just really lazy, the story. Random things aren't explained, characters that seem important just disappear and don't get involved (the dad?), etc.
It wasn't awful, but yeah. Blah.

 Re: The Unborn
Why do we always get bad PG-13 horror films in January? Oh wait a minute there's no such thing as a good PG-13 horror film so why am I asking? The only thing that saved this trainwreck is the bizarre out-of-place sequence involving Nazi's and their genetic experiments. It was so unexpected. That and the appearance and disappearance of snow in the same scenes. Unborn is another in a long line of pointless, frightless, wanna be horror films aimed at the retarded tween audience. Grade D--

Oh, how I laughed. Such a hoot of a horror flick. Completely terrible, of course. But put yourself in the right frame of mind and it's fun.
They managed to rip off scenes from The Exorcist and Exorcist III simultaneously. Amazing.

 Re: The Unborn
This was awful I can't believe that someone even associated with The Dark Knight made this. It feels completely amateurish in every way. The direction uses every horror movie cliche in the book and relies too heavily on cheap scares that are never successful. And the screenplay is unquestionably awful and moronic. Not only do the characters spit out some of the hokiest dialogue I've heard in a film in quite some time, once the film starts trying to explain why the supernatural events are occurring it turns into some odd Exorcist ripoff with a little Nazi backstory thrown into the mix. The performances are all pretty awful. Odette Yustman, who was part of one of last year's most underrated ensemble casts in the brilliant Cloverfield, is absolutely terrible here. She recites her lines like she is reading them off a teleprompter and seems incapable of expressing more than one or two emotions at most. Gary Oldman is obviously just earning a paycheck here and barely has enough screentime to even register. Cam Gigandet is a bland love interest, and Jane Alexander is beyond over-the-top in her small role. The lone bright spot is surprisingly Meagan Good, who actually injects some energy into her thankless role and proves to be far more interesting and endearing than the central heroine. The one upside to seeing this film? It's absolutely hilarious. Like, I haven't seen a funnier horror movie since The Wicker Man hilarious. Every single "scare" had me bursting out laughing (whether it was the bathroom scene, where I was seriously in shock of what I was watching, the whole thing with her constantly opening the mirror, or the HYSTERICAL and overdramatic exorcism near the end), as did the ridiculously stupid decisions every character made, every line of dialogue (my personal favorite was in a scene where Casey was talking to her friend about how the spirit won't stop haunting her, and the friend suggests "You should leave town!" ) or the number of plot holes present. That alone makes it worth checking out at least once. D+

Sounds hilarious! But I'll watch good ones in theaters and wait and see this on DVD, no matter how much fun it might be .

He helped write JUMPER! My personal least favorite film of 2008, and know he attatched himself to this brainless trash. Nolan would be better off letting him make these crappy movies than get his name on great films.

Goyer is inconsistent. he also wrote all 3 blades, and the first two of those were really good. He also helped write dark City. The dude knows Comics.

 Re: The Unborn
I unfortunately ended up seeing this today because Revolutionary Road was sold out (we're going tomorrow) and this was pretty much the only movie that started at a similar time.
So abysmal. There was seriously nothing redeeming about it whatsoever. The lead actress (Odette Yustman) was awful, there wasn't a single scary or even creepy moment, and it makes absolutely no sense. Yikes. Only the second movie I've seen from 2009 and already a strong contender to be the worst. D-

Hm. As much as I hate horror movies, and this is by no means a good film, I actually didn't think it was that bad. Maybe I was in a good mood.

The composer needs to be shot. Every single single scene had this screaming whine to it.
Its generic tween horror fluff but the last 1/3rd saves it for being a total disaster. Still pretty shit though and the 2 black characters die so I call racism! Also has Nazi's so it hates Germans as well. BAD MOVIE!

2/10 -> FGulli wrote: The composer needs to be shot. Every single single scene had this screaming whine to it. The music is actually the only reason I'm not giving this one a complete 1/10. The guy who wrote the music must have been inspired like hell. Every moment here is more important than the other. At least the music would suggest that. It sucked hard, but it made me laugh throughout the movie. Everything else - the story, the acting, the directing was as horrible as it can be.

 Re: The Unborn
Was scanning the reviews forum and found I hadn't reviewed this way back when.
Pretty much echo everyone's opinions. I'm not one of the "BAN PG-13 HORROR FOREVER!" people. I've enjoyed a horror film here and there without the necessary R-rating. In fact, the movie that should've snagged The Unborn's BO numbers (and better) was The Uninvited. Perfect example of a good PG-13 horror flick. This is not only really bad, but really boring.
I was sort of creeped out by the old dude walking with his upside down head. But yeah, nothing else redeeming, attractive lead actress aside, as well as a fairly unnecessary and distracting Gary Oldman. I can only assume he was doing Goyer a favor by being in the movie, unless my TDK adoration is clouding my judgment and making me think Oldman is above PG-13 horror flicks.

Poor Gary Oldman. He deserves so much better.
David S. Goyer needs to be dragged behind a motor vehicle of some kind.

 Re: The Unborn
For some reason Goyer decides to begin the film at the beginning of the second act. There's no setup. She has a creepy dream, dream becomes real, stuff happens that we can't quite understand because the film feels hacked together, who gives a shit? Are we supposed to automatically care for her just because the film says so? And then the whole thing with the Nazi's...
Gary Oldman and Odette Yustman's cameltoe are the film's only high points.
½*
Oh, and why does the word WORD appear at the end of the credits? Is that some sort of hip new way of saying "Fin"?
