Quote:
The General is a 1926 American silent comedy film released by United Artists based upon the Great Locomotive Chase from 1862. Buster Keaton starred in the film and co-directed it with Clyde Bruckman. It was adapted by Al Boasberg, Bruckman, Keaton, Charles Henry Smith (uncredited) and Paul Girard Smith (uncredited) from the memoir The Great Locomotive Chase by William Pittenger. The film was a box-office disaster at its original release, but is now considered by critics as one of the greatest films ever made.

Maybe. :) I'm also trying to add some missing classics here once a while.

An indisputable classic. Perfect in just about every aspect. I've seen it probably half a dozen times (A lot for me), and it never gets old. An all time favorite, and my introduction to the wonderful world of silent film. :wub2:

Silent or not, a classic indeed. Films don't get much more fun than this. Not just the humor, but seeing the bridge collapsing, and the battle scene; all make me want to watch it again. A.

Hilarious and thrilling at the same. The stunt work is just insane. You really don't see stuff like this anymore.

My only complaint really was that it did drag at times and the fact that it was being told from the Confederate point of view. I guess I'm too used to rooting for the Union, but it felt weird being on the Confederate side. Couldn't get past that.

Then again, it's about a fool who's remarkably lucky accidents are the only part of the confederate army that works. It's not really flattering or supportive of either side, it's a spoof of both. We watched half of it in a film class, I'm eager to fill in the blanks, it was quite impressive.

Exactly. If they don't know how to behave, and feel OK offending others, they get their ass kicked, so they'll think next time before opening their rotten mouths.

I'll agree with Magnus that parts of the film do drag on a bit too long but this is just a great comedy anyway. Such a simple story told in a very entertaining way that holds up 86 years later.
