The Third Man
The Third ManQuote: The Third Man is a 1949 British film noir directed by Carol Reed and starring Joseph Cotten, Alida Valli, Orson Welles, and Trevor Howard. The screenplay was written by novelist Graham Greene, later becoming his novella of the same name. Anton Karas wrote the score, which used only the zither; its title cut topped the international music charts in 1950.

Re: The Third Man
Joseph Cotten at the top of his game, the impeccable Graham Greene screenplay, the scene setting zither music, and Orson Welles character's famous line: Quote: Harry Lime: "Don't be so gloomy. After all it's not that awful. Like the fella says, in Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love - they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock. So long Holly." A classic moody thriller.

Re: The Third Man
It's pretty fantastic. I love how the twisty, confusing, frustrating mystery that Holly attempts to solve throughout the course of the film is mirrored in the end, when Harry attempts to navigate a labyrinthine sewer system to escape. And that zither music - it's a bit off-putting the first time around, but does it ever fit in the film, somehow. Plus you've got all the usual trademarks of a classic noir - shadowy lighting, mysterious characters, dark settings, and the protagonist's ambiguous morality - combined with Welles' legendary performance, especially that above (ad-libbed) line, and a fantastic final shot. This, Magnus, is why film-noir is superior to neo-noir.

Wait. Does Magnus actually believe that? There are like 3 (tops) good neo-noirs.

Re: The Third Man
Magnus' ramblings aside, this is excellent. I remember watching it for the first time, and the shock at the Harry Lime reveal, cuz for whatever reason I didn't fully realize that Orson was going to be playing Harry Lime alive and well. That was awesome. The cinematography and the score are also excellent. Just an all around classic.

Not only are those films he mentioned not all that good, a list of quality films noir would be miles longer.

Re: The Third Man
It's very very good. Actually I can't name many films that used setting better. The streets, buildings, and sewage of course is used perfectly here. Might as well throw in the score to that too.
Great ending.
Cotton is fantastic. I'm starting to wonder how he's not in Tier 1 for Movie Superstars. Cotton > Bogart, Gable. IMO
