Quote:
American Splendor is a 2003 biopic about Harvey Pekar, the author of the American Splendor comic book series. The film is also in part an adaptation of the comics, which dramatize Pekar's life. The film was written and directed by documentarians Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini, who share writing credit with Pekar and his wife, Joyce Brabner It stars Paul Giamatti as Pekar and Hope Davis as Brabner. However, it also features appearances from Pekar and Brabner themselves (along with Toby Radloff), who discuss their lives, the comic books, and how it feels to be depicted onscreen by actors. It was filmed entirely on location in Cleveland and Lakewood in Ohio.

{My original review from August 2003:}

American Splendour: Nerd Chic

Feeling isolated by your nerdiness? Do you believe the jocks will always rule the planet? Want to see someone's life that is more pitiful than your own?

Well get out and see American Splendor, the docu-drama-comic of the real life person, Harvey Pekar. It is really inspiring and touching in it's anti-heroic heroism. By the end, I believed in Harvey. Very nicely done, and it would make a dynamite natural double bill with Crumb. Temporarily escape mediocrity and see American Splendor.

5 out of 5.

Very funny, very touching, very well made and acted. No secret, I'm on the nerd side of the fence, so it's relatable.

Giamatti is at his apex as the loser... maybe one of his more defining roles. I LOVED Hope Davis too, she felt like someone he could love. Also, even though I don't normally like him, Judah Friedlander is pretty great as Toby... that role could've slipped into over the top ridiculousness, but he didn't let it. Surprisingly enough though, I think the most captivating presence was Harvey himself. The narrator and the David Letterman sequences were two of my favorite in the movie.

It says a lot to me about life. Not much more I can say there, it's just... one of those movies.

Me likey.

One of my all-time favorite comedies. Paul Giamatti gives one of the decade's best performances. I don't know how the hell he wasn't nominated for this or for Sideways.
