Quote:
The Ladykillers is a 2004 black comedy film directed, written and produced by the Coen brothers and stars Tom Hanks, with a supporting cast that includes J. K. Simmons, Marlon Wayans, Tzi Ma, Ryan Hurst and Irma P. Hall. It is based on the 1955 Ealing comedy of the same name.

It is the first film in which Ethan and Joel Coen share both producing and directing credits; previously Ethan had always been credited as producer and Joel as director. The film was originally to be directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, the Coens' former cinematographer. They were commissioned to write the script. When Sonnenfeld backed out, the Coens were eventually hired as directors, with Sonnenfeld retaining a producer credit.

I think me and seven other people liked it. Then again, I haven't seen a Coen Bros. film that I haven't liked so.....

A

I can't add much more since I haven't seen it in a long time. All I can remember is that I thought it was very funny and clever.

Yeah, I saw some of the trash talk about this film in the No Country For Old Men thread, so I thought I'd better request a thread so it can get it's due reqards...

Here's my review from it's original theatrical release back in April 2004:

Quote:
The Ladykillers: Killer Comic Heist Movie!

The trailers for this movie put me off so much I almost didn't see it - Tom Hanks laugh alone made me cringe. But I finally did manage to see it despite my reservations, and surprise! - it was actually good. The less well known actors who play the other members of the heist gang are too funny! Plus the Coens brought their usual wonky style to a more mainstream movie to the betterment of both.

Recommended.

4 out 5.

This is a very, very funny movie. But the Marlon Wayans character just does not come off at all. He seems to have wandered in from a different set. He's not enough to kill the film, but he comes frighteningly close.

Horribly unfunny and boring.

The whole movie was sort of different, so I didn't have anything strike me as unusual.

I thought it was decent.

6.9/10

Funny how after the mainstream success of No Country For Old Men, that everyone splooges all over a minor Coen like Burn After Reading, yet a much better better minor Coen like The Ladykillers is all but ignored...

Nope - - there's no such thing as hype/groupthink...

BAR doesn't have that great a grade at yahoo.

People might have forgotten about Ladykillers, they might disagree, it might be for other reasons, or there might be no groupthink or hype (in this case), just a convergence of opinions for some combination of reasons.

Loved watching this today. It's perfectly oddball, Coen-style, and everyone's great in it. I didn't even mind Marlon Wayans, but his part could have went to a more deserving actor. Lots of funny twists and turns, even if by the end, you know how it'll end.

Grade: B+

Could've been a little tighter in spots, but overall great.

Post Re: The Ladykillers (2004)
After seeing previews for what looks to be a painfully bad movie (Larry Crowne), I appreciate Tom Hanks more when he plays against-type. I wish he'd do it more, or at least act more. Enough Da Vinci Code bullshit, get back to real movies, Tom. And quit trying to direct.

Man, I remember thinking in the 90s how great a Tom Hanks/Julia Roberts pairing would be. I'm dreading Larry Crowne.
