Live Free or Die Hard

Image

Quote:
Live Free or Die Hard (released as Die Hard 4.0 outside North America), is a 2007 American action film, and the fourth installment in the Die Hard series. The film was directed by Len Wiseman and stars Bruce Willis as John McClane. The name was adapted from the state motto of New Hampshire, "Live Free or Die". The main plot finds McClane fighting a gang of cyber terrorists who plan to hack FBI computers. The film was based on the 1997 article "A Farewell to Arms" written for Wired magazine by John Carlin. The film's North American release date was June 27, 2007.

After the project was stalled due to the September 11, 2001 attacks, production eventually began, and the film's title was switched several times. A variety of visual effects were used for action sequences, even though Wiseman and Willis stated that they wanted to limit the amount of CGI in the film. In separate incidents during filming, both Willis and his stunt double were injured. Unlike the prior three films in the series, the US rating was PG-13 rather than R. An unrated version of Live Free or Die Hard containing profanity and violence not included in the theatrical version was made available for the DVD release.

The film received generally positive reviews, earning a 82% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and 69/100 from Metacritic. The film had total international box office gross receipts of $383.5 million. For the DVD release, 20th Century Fox pioneered a new kind of DRM, Digital Copy, that tries to weaken the incentives for consumers to learn how to rip discs by offering them a downloadable version with studio-imposed restrictions. The score for the film was released on July 2, 2007.

I'm just back from this movie.

Wow!

No, not the movie..

but I'm really shocked to find out that it got very high score on RT scale. It's not that good. I mean, 86% fresh?

Maybe the critics see that how this movie relies on old-school stunt work is kind of refreshing which I totally agree. It was REALLY impressive. And that's where it gains the score from me.

But that's it.

Ok, Bruce Willis and Justin Long are really fine too. Oh, Kevin Smith was so great too (the funniest scene of the whole movie).

But anything else? It was noticeably very poor-edited. And watching these characters in nonsense computer-tech.. whatever plot line - made me bored sometime.

But then again, it was expected to be all about incredible stunt works and over-the-top action scenes. And it delivers (for this part).

*** out of ***** (B-)

Oh, this will change a lot..

I'm not a fan of this franchise.. actually I kind of never watched any of Die Hard movie (I mean, I did watch it but never got through to the end)..

LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD

Screening audience 1930 100% full.

Action - A

The film had well paced action pieces in between the "talky" parts. Each action scene was well done and almost all believable and exciting. The film did not get boring at all. The stunt work was great as well with guys being thrown off cars, falling out of buildings, leaping from helicopters, crashing through windows and stunt driving.

Plot - A

The usual type stuff here but with an electronic theme which was extremely interesting. The FBI wasn't portrayed well as they seemed clueless throughout but the bad guy crew was well put together with the femme fatale, nerdy helper and cool bad guy. Olyphant is a really good actor and can play evil cool in any project. The makeup of the bad guys kind of reminds me of the bad guys in Dark Territory a bit. Back to plot, very interesting with the hacking of the three major networks and causing mass confusion. Computer hacking a nice way to make anything happen in most movies and it was well done here.

Buddy Cop - A

Early on, it was like Justin Long in DH4? What? It was PERFECT. He's extremely believable and had good lines and played off of Bruce Willis with no problems. One would think he'd get annoying but he was interesting and it was neat to see his character gain bits of confidence each way. Bruce had the right lines at the right moments too. After the major kills he'd always throw in some comment that got the crowd laughing. Perfection.

Grade - A

This ranks right up with DH and DH2 for me. Pure entertainment. Fun. Not boring at all.

By the time Live Free or Die Hard finally rolls to a stop, it's not hard to see how it's different from the original Die Hard. Where Die Hard keeps the script taut and suspenseful by having the action all take place in one 40-story building, Live Free or Die Hard lumbers from set piece to set piece, each one working hard at one-upping the one before it. If McTiernan's film was the equivalent of eating a bag of gourmet popcorn, Live Free or Die Hard is like swallowing endless quantities of said snack through a beer bong.
Both the original Die Hard and this latest installment feature Bruce Willis as perhaps his most iconic character wreaking havoc in order to prevent well armed miscreants from stealing countless quantities of money. After that, they travel two very different action movie paths in delivering the goods. And while Live Free or Die Hard has quadruple the body count (and don't worry about the rating, this is easily the most violent "PG-13" film ever created), after awhile the shenanigans wear a bit thin. That's not to say their isn't spectacle to be had from people fighting in elevator shafts. It's just questionable as to whether the film really needed to have half a dozen different ones.
Like so many action films of the twenty first century, bloat is the biggest problem the movie has. Besides the charismatic and dogged Justin Long, the side characters, especially Cliff Curtis' exhausted FBI agent, are extraneous. Even McClane himself at one point asks how the hell the villian has so many henchman.
If this all sounds overly harsh on a film containing some of the most spectacular action scenes of the year, it's only because it's predecessor is so well made. Live Free or Die Hard may fall prey to the usual flaws of the genre, but it rises above the pack by it's sheer preposterous chaos and Bruce Willis' convincingly strong performance. Maybe it is like swallowing too much popcorn, but for any action fan the shit will no doubt taste delicious.

From what I've been hearing is that it feels not like a Die Hard film much like the third didn't. I'm actually quite shocked how it had better reviews and reception then With a Vengence (Im talking DH2), just because he's not stuck in a place. Can't wait, seeing it tonight with 8 friends.

But people have certainly warmed up to the third film

Bruce Willis is back kicking ass to a whole new level. Seriously, the plot pacing at such a rapid pace as the action flows continuously, I think this is the best the Die Hard series. The comedy is great as Justin Long plays his Apple computer nerd perfectly. His chemisty with Willis shows up on the big screen. And then there is the action. There is a tunnel and a bridge sequence that had me saying "Holy shit!".

This is easily the best action-blockbuster of the summer. Bring on Die Hard 5!!

I'm shocked to say the least. Not only is this the best action film of the year, but it might be the best action film since 1996's The Rock. The PG-13 rating didn't hurt the film at all like I thought it would. Yes there are a couple of scenes with obvious dubbing, but it wasn't annoying. And Justin Long. Not annoying. He's actually very good in the Samuel L. Jackson role. He had a very good chemistry with Willis. And as for Willis - kicking ass over 50. A problem some may have with Willis and the character is that McClaine is practically Superman until the final scene. Jumping on jets, flying down an elevator shaft, well it works in the context of the film. Speaking of elevators, the elevator shaft scene is the most inventive action scene in a few years. Finally there's Olyphant. Granted, he's no Rickman or Irons, but he's really good here. He doesn't quite have the intimidation factor that those two had, but he's got the smarts and that's what makes his character so good. He has fun with the character and it works.

So to sum things up, it's not only the best action film in a decade, but it's surprisingly one of the best *films* of the year. Hopefully it does well so we can see Die Hard 5.

A+

Bring on the Unrated DVD!

It's muffled. It was the only downer in the film for me.

This is the most surprising reaction to a film I ever seen.

I expected Hell from the reviews.

B+.

This was by far my least favorite DH, with 2 being my favorite, but I still liked it a lot. Good action pieces, if not always believable. Justin Long was surprisingly not annoying and I even liked him and his character. There are some tonal changes from past Die Hards mainly its a bit less bloody than predecessors, except for McClaine who was his normal bloody self minus the much loved wife-beater and there was much less cursing. Olyphant was a good bad guy if a bit...easily dispatched? The scene from the trailer featuring Kevin Smith was actually good in its context unlike the trailer version.

The elevator scene was great, even though it reminded me a lot of Jurassic Park and I was really into the truck jet scene. Both two of the better action pieces of the past couple of years.

Lot's of beatings and McClaine keeps on ticking. It's nice to see an old school action hero that uses brute force to dispatch foes while at the same time carrying and understated intelligence. I wouldn't mind a sequel.

Does anyone know the first song played during the trailer?

John Maclane easily makes my top 5 best action heros ever, and Bruce willis does not look 57, amazing

this fllm is without a doubt better than the 2nd and 3rd films. Although the action is much more unrealistic than the first three, it's still bearble, unlike The Shitfest known as Tranporter 2. This, like Rocky Balbo, and soon to Be Indy 4, Proves that it dosnt matter how old the action stars from the 80s get, they will always make a kick ass action films.

(A)

This film currently has an 8.5 at IMDB, I hope it goes up.

Surprisingly good. Nowhere near as good as the classic original film, but it's still a blast. The action is wonderfully exciting and well-done, the stunts are INSANE, and Willis as John McClane is back to being his wisecracking, ass-kicking self- he once again totally owns the role. Justin Long and Mary Elizabeth Winstead were both effective as well. They really brought their A-game to what could have been thankless, stereotypical parts- the former was frequently hilarious, while the latter was sassy and damn cute. This is easily the second best film of the franchise, behind Die Hard with a Vengeance. A-

DH4 is the antidote to U93...

This is a real Die Hard movie -- don't let anyone tell ya different. (As a matter of fact, this is the first (and best) of the second trilogy.) It's essentially a remake of the 1988 original. Forget anything you hear about it not being in one location -- that's old skool thinking. Live Free or Die Hard is indeed set in one location: John McClane.

This is the kinda movie that lets me think we're starting a new era! Finally, terrorists can once again be realistically threatening instead of cartoonishly foolish. A good ol' good guy/bad guy movie. A movie that's not afraid to go over the top, and then keep on goin'. A movie where violence is the punchline. A Bruce Willis movie for christsakes!

The supporting actors are superb -- let me name 'em: Cliff Curtis, Kevin Smith, Maggie Q, Justin Long, Timothy Olyphant, and Sky High's Mary Elizabeth Winstead -- not necessarily in any order, they're all that good!

This is a new classic in the action genre. One that's gonna be listed on the AFI top hundred of 2100. It's the real freakin' deal. Wow!

12 out of 5.

(Oh... and BTW -- it's hilarious.)

For anyone who's keepin' count, here's the score...

Die Hard Movies (best to worst):

1. DH4 & DH1 (tie)

The most satisfying sequel since Rocky Balboa to say the least. I was pumped to see this movie and it didn't disappoint Willis was awesome (Hes only 51, not 57 DIB2) I can't label it as good as 1 and 3, because I've loved them for over 12 years now, but this is like said, probably the best action film in a few years. It's perfect from start to finish. Willis needs to return. If it had become more unrealistic it takes it all the way tongue and cheek.

Its the 80s and early 90s in 2007. This movie really showed, they don't make them like they used to. Die Hard 5 would not be out of the question. I think this could happen if it really blows up at the box office, and it could.

A+ best blockbuster of the year easily.
