Vérités et mensonges [F for Fake]
F for FakeQuote: F for Fake (French: Vérités et mensonges) is the last major film completed by Orson Welles, who directed, co-wrote, and starred in the film. Initially released in 1974, it focuses on Elmyr de Hory's recounting of his career as a professional art forger; de Hory's story serves as the backdrop for a fast-paced, meandering investigation of the natures of authorship and authenticity, as well as the basis of the value of art. Loosely a documentary, the film operates in several different genres and has been described as a kind of film essay.
Far from serving as a traditional documentary on Elmyr de Hory, the film also incorporates Welles's companion Oja Kodar, notorious "hoax-biographer" Clifford Irving, and Orson Welles himself, in an autobiographical role. In 2005, The Criterion Collection released the film on Region 1 DVD, and in 2009 it was released for Region 4 by Madman Entertainment's Director's Suite.

You're too good at your job, Nebs.
And this movie is too good for the movies. Seriously. New favorite movie? Best ending ever? Check and check.

Re: Vérités et mensonges [F for Fake]
Not quite.
I think the best way of describing how I felt about it is that I understood it but didn't appreciate it. I acknowledge its brilliance, and know what Welles was going for, but I didn't enjoy watching it. It felt smug and condescending and self-indulgent. And also not as clever as it thinks it is. At no point did I forget that Welles had made a promise to tell the truth only for one hour. I knew that some sort of trick would be played on the audience. And when it happened, I was totally underwhelmed.
Still, it's a masterclass in editing, and Welles' brilliance is never in question. It's just the fact that he knows he's brilliant that ruins it for me. It's a completely egotistical work.
I hate to fall back on the ol' "technically well-made but emotionally disconnected" excuse, but there you go. As superbly crafted as it may be (and is), I still didn't like watching it. For whatever reason.

Well... Welles was smug, condescending and self-indulgent. He was also a planet in the end.
