Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer
Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer Quote: Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer is a 2007 American superhero film, and sequel to the 2005 film Fantastic Four. Both films are based on the Fantastic Four comic book and were directed by Tim Story. Ioan Gruffudd as Reed Richards, Jessica Alba as Sue Storm, Chris Evans as Johnny Storm, and Michael Chiklis as Ben Grimm are the film series' recurring protagonists, while Julian McMahon and Kerry Washington reprised their roles from the first film as, respectively, Victor Von Doom and Alicia Masters. Doug Jones and Beau Garrett appear in the sequel as the Silver Surfer and Frankie Raye, respectively, along with Laurence Fishburne as the voice of the Silver Surfer. The plot follows the Fantastic Four as they confront, and later ally with, the Silver Surfer to save Earth from Galactus.
While the film was the highest-grossing film during the week that immediately followed its release on June 15, 2007 in North America and was the recipient of two out of fifteen awards nominations, it was not well received by critics. The film was released onto Blu-ray Disc and DVD on October 2, 2007.

In a word, F4:2 is literally: FANTASTIC!!!
I absolutely, freakin' LOVED it...
This is a superhero movie as I envision superhero movies. Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer now tops my list of best superhero movies of all-time, ousting Superman 2 from the top spot it has held, lo these many years. (I'm not joking.)
90 minutes of pure story-driven, character-amplified, sci-fi/action, flatout funny, smart-adrenaline, wild-ass fun!!!!!!!!
If you can believe it... the story actually makes sense! (Yeah, I know - pretty freaky for a modern movie, where FX drive the boat, but it's true!!!) And the actors outdid their characterizations in F4:1 -- they are perfectomundo, and I simply can't wait to see them again in F4:3!
This is the best "movie" of 2007 so far -- easily beating out the brilliant likes of Waitress, Blades of Glory, and The Lookout.
I have two ratings for it:
First for fans of the pure, yet humorous superhero genre, I rate this my all-time highest rating of:
15 out of 5.
Second and finally, for a general, hip audience -- I rate this:
12 out of 5.

Shut up guys, bradley is just messing with you all. He has a much better idea of what makes a good movie than many of you think.

I'm not objecting to bradley's tastes, it's just that we usually have very differing opinions on movies. And I'm being dragged to this movie this weekend.

I should've added "That said, I have no idea what he could be talking about with this one, but I trust bradley enough to give this a shot."

The thing with this movie is it doesn't have the high-bar to surpass. Unlike, well, other summer films. I walked into the film with tiny expectation.
And..
I'm not a fan of comic. I don't know how each of the characters is supposed to be. So, keep that in mind, this is a comment from non-comic fan.
But for what I've witnessed, there were enough humors and eye-candy action scenes to call this movie; a senseless, mindless FUN flick.
It -quality wise- was on par with the first one with, IMO, OVERALL better action scenes. Remember the action sequence on the bridge in the first Fantastic Four movie? No action sequence in FF2 can top that. But that's it for the first one; ONE GREAT SEQUENCE (it was actually kind of going way down after that scene). While in FF2, there are nice action scenes here and there, from the beginning to the end.
Although I'd say FF2 was throughout enjoyable film. But once I stepped out of the theater, everything was left behind in the dark theater (definition of the word; forgettable). But then again, so was the first one.
The casts were ok. I wasn't expecting anything good actually. Well, just wished they'll have Chris Evans in shirtless one more time (and thank God, they did). Btw, this movie did surprise me on one thing; how could they make someone like Alba looked quite awful on screen.
*** out of ***** (B-)

Bradley's the type of guy whose opinion on a movie I completely respect and try to understand, but never would I use him as a gauge for recommendation.

C-.
Their is no chemistry between anyone on the team. Does anyone really believe that Sue would date Reed? I think this movie easily broke the record for most product placement, and even the characters mention it in two, somewhat funny, bits. The special effects were nothing we haven't saw before (except the cloud upheaval effects which I found beautiful). The script was so crappy that they didn't even...
Spoiler
bother to give an explanation for the return of Doom, who shows up occasionally to be "menacing" or something. Even the characters ask why/how he was brought back, to which Doom responds with an "evil" stare.
A major problem I had with the film was it's illogical use of time. Characters are able to move from the top of a building to the bottom near instantaneously (the scene where Sue switches powers for a second) and in all the flying scenes. The team will fly from Siberia and through China in about 10 seconds in a ship without a cover.
End Spoiler
The end was wrapped up very quickly without ANY tension or doubt (or emotion...). This was quite easily the most boring major superhero picture I have ever saw. The only redeeming qualities were its quick running time, which might be considered high praise in this summer of long as hell tent poles, and Fishburne's Surfer voice.
The reason that I gave this a C- was that it was better than the first and I like the Silver Surfer in general.

Not as fun as the first but still a good popcorn flick.
I hope they make a silver surfer movie where the FF's do the cameo.

I've noticed a particular tone to some of the reviews here on WOKJ and in most of the professional reviewers on RottenTomatoes, and that tone is:
Haughtiness.
Clearly many people have made up their minds not to like this movie in advance, and then when they realize that it's actually a great movie, have to internally reconcile those two conditions. The result seems to be haughtiness, or disdain if you will. A kind of proud state of denial. Perhaps outright superciliousness even...
And I can't blame anyone for it -- after all, the current fashion for superheroes is ( faux) seriousness, rather than the camp style I was raised on. But as I mentioned in my review, "this is a superhero movie as I envision superhero movies" -- clearly not as the majority of modern viewers do.
Still, it's interesting for me to observe reviewer's internal conflict, visible in the writing of their reviews. You read it here first -- keep your eyes open for it:
Haughtiness.*
( *...and no, I don't mean Jessica Alba style " hottiness"...)

Y'know I really, really didn't mind how they handled Galactus. Some would call it lazy, but I'd also argue that I could take it a lot more seriously than a giant purple guy. That said, I thought they handled the resolution of it much too easily. Anyways, the film had it's moments but never really truly engaged me as much as I wish it had. I tried to go with the concept of this super scientist so smart he can build stuff no one else has ever thought of in hours, but honestly I just wanted more Ben Grimm, who sadly is relegated to being the comic relief.

Ahem, let me just let it out and go a bit BKB style.
GOD I HATE THOSE IDIOTS WHO MADE THE FILM!!!
What???? YOU NEVER SEE GALACTUS? HE'S JUST A FUCKIN' CLOUD??? WTF???
Silver Surfer loses his board and HE himself loses his powers??? SINCE WHEN??? Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Silver Surfer has even had his board DESTROYED, and he has the ABILITY to create ANOTHER one, just like that, yes, the Surfer is that baddass, they turned him into a weakass homosexual in this movie...ARGH!!! And then gets interrogated and tortured by a measly puny human??? GET THE FUCK OUTTA HERE WITH THAT ONE, LOL!!!
...and then Doom, who's the absolute WORST villain to EVER hit the silver screen, gets hold of the board, lol, and THEN, Johnny Storm aborbs all the Fantastic Four's COMBINED powers AND DUKES IT OUT WITH DOOM...LOL!
OH MY GOD ALMIGHTY!!!
This movie blows.
End post.

So damn weird. I've never been a fan of comic book movies. Even laughted at people who bitched about how this movie "was not in spirit" of comic book. And laughed again. Who the fuck cared about comic book fans?
And then I started reading them comic books. And most of them were fine. I fell in love in Fantastic Four. I fell in love in Spider-Man, and truth be told, they were soooooo much better potrayed in comics than in movies.
All in all, I'm pretty drunk at the moment, and really not sure what I've wanted to say.
Will try tomorrow again.
Cheers.

Haven't watched the original and didn't really know much about the characters going in, but it's a rather entertaining popcorn flick. Mindless but fun, and it didn't overstay its welcome. B.

Enjoyed it. The pace was fast and the humor worked more than the first one. Plus, the Silver Surfer was very cool and I want a movie with just him. As for not being faithful to the comics, who really cares except for people who can't realize that film is an entirely different medium and may require changes for dramatic purposes, especially having to do with the Surfer's board. The movie doesn't really work if he can just make another one, does it? Nope.
