 Once
Once Quote: Once is a 2006 Irish musical film written and directed by John Carney. Set in Dublin, this naturalistic drama stars musicians Glen Hansard (of popular Irish rock band The Frames) and Markéta Irglová as struggling musicians. Collaborators prior to making the film, Hansard and Irglová composed and performed all of the original songs in the movie.
Shot for only €130,000 (US$160,000), the film was successful, earning substantial per-screen box office averages in the United States. It received enthusiastic reviews and awards such as the 2007 Independent Spirit Award for best foreign film. Hansard and Irglová's song "Falling Slowly" received a 2008 Academy Award for Best Original Song and the soundtrack as a whole also received a Grammy nomination.
Once spent years in development with the Irish Film Board. It was during a period where the film board had no chief executive (for about 6 months) that the film was given the go-ahead by a lower level executive on the proviso that the producers could make it on a budget of approx 150k euro and not the initial higher budget.

Once -- was enough!
I had pretty high hopes for this Indie Irish musical romance after seeing the trailer a couple times, but I ended up being severely disappointed. It reminds me of unpleasantly earnest earlier times in my own life. It's just way too faux serious for my tastes anymore. As a matter of fact, as I was watching it, a word came to me to describe it -- a word I've never actually used before in my life in writing or conversation -- but a word which accurately describes this movies tonal fault...
Once is way too twee.
It's a darn shame too! Because the idea is a great one for a romance: two off beat misfits, recovering from failed romances, meeting through a shared love of song - right through the whole recording studio sequence. But, alas -- as it turns out, this movie which aims to be "real" ends up striking a false note. Even Hollywood's recent take on a similar story idea... Music & Lyrics, ended up having much more real heart.
But then again, what do I know? I bet if you're in your 20's/30's and still going through your earnest phase, you might just bloody well love it...
As for me, I'll take my ROM with a lot more COM these days, and rate this sour tune:
2 out of 5.
(Even, the main song which sounded kinda pleasantly plaintive in the trailer, and in it's first few run throughs in the movie -- ended up sounding downright whiny, especially given all the self-congratulation about it during the film...)

Ack, anything with the lead singer of The Frame's immediately has me running for the hills.

I hope it's like Before Sunset, that is one of my favorite films. Even if it's not, I can't see me being disappointed in this. It seems great.

Yow! That is just out-and-out crazy talk. Especially when you get to the part about Moulin Rouge -- that's when I knew you'd lost it... big time. I can only imagine seeing your face when you read that quote out loud at the WOKJ Reunion Dinner of 2032! It'll be worth the wait...

Never let it be said, that I discourage anyone's love of any movie. This one just didn't happen to work for me at all...

I've already got the soundtrack coming in on Amazon. And yes, I'm aware I'm a bit of a square for that.
And bradley, unlike loyal I can even see why someone with a smart view on film would dislike this movie, and like you, I just feel sad it didn't rub you the right way.

Add me to those who ordered the soundtrack on Amazon.
Amazing little film. Marketa Irglova (sp?) is a revelation while Hansard is a charming lead. This is kind of like Lost in Translation in reverse: in that film, the two leads try to escape their normal lives in order to achieve something, while in Once, the two leads pursue status quo in order to be fulfilled (Guy is his ex-girlfriend and Girl is her baby daddy - with songwriting and the recording process sprinkled all over).
Hopefully some songs will end up at Oscar's shortlist.

I can't imagine it being better than Dancer in the Dark, as far as current decade musicals go...but I just saw the trailer for it for the first time in front of Jindabyne and it has shot near the top of the "kypade would like to view this film" list.

Just saw it.
I liked it, but it wasn't great like I wanted it to be, and got boring at times. Plot was simple, but fresh. The boy kind of annoyed me, but the girl was exceptional. You really felt for her, and the actress was great. I just left with the feeling that this was more of an extended music video than a coherent film.

Yeah, I felt the same way as Snickety Snack. The film was like a big music video, in the sense that most of the songs were played about 7 times each. It got really old, really fast, and I just didn't care for the characters.
