Post 2005 $40 million+ openers
What movies do you think can pull off the big $40 million on it's opening weekend? I think we'll have quite a few this year. In 2004, we had 13 movies to open with over $40 million, plus 4 movies that just missed the mark by about $1-2 million. Hopefully, we can break 13 this year. :D

Locks

Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith
Batman Begins
War of the Worlds
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
King Kong
The Ring Two

Great Chance

The Longest Yard
Madagascar
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Chicken Little
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe

Good Chance

Hitch
Robots
xXx: State of the Union
Fantastic Four

Slim Chance

Elektra
Constantine
Kingdom of Heaven
Mr. and Mrs. Smith
The Dukes of Hazzard
Underworld: Evolution

I think we'll have 11, atleast.

I hope by the time it comes out, that Sin City will have generated enough buzz to make $40 Million in its first weekend. I would absolutely LOVE Underworld to do it. ;)

Otherwise, these will do:

War of the Worlds
Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
King Kong
Batman Begins
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe
Robots

The only reason I didn't put it there is because Ocean's Twelve, which I thought would make over $50 million, barely missed $40 million. I don't know, there's a slight chance that it might not make $40 million, though I'm predicting over $60 million for it.

I think The Ring 2 will open to $39m for some reason. Its just the top horror opening in March is Dawn of the Dead with $26m. But it probably will if the hype is great. No matter what it opens to though it will not have good legs.

I think the minimum this can open to is $40 million. The Grudge opened to $39 million for being a The Ring look alike. I'm sure the sequel to one of the most loved teen horror movies in the past 10 years can get more than $40 million.

Anyone else wondering what will happen on Memorial Day Weekend? I mean, you have the second weekend of Star Wars Episode III, The Longest Yard, and Madagascar. Could all three be above $40 million that weekend?

No way. Longest Yard, what is this? wont even get $40M on opening weekend. Madagascar, is it its 2nd weekend? or first? if its first, then yes. second, no!

StarWars, over $40M 2nd weekend? hmmm, yeh spose.

Star Wars is in it's second weekend, and The Longest Yard and Madagascar are in their opening weekend. The Longest Yard stars Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Nelly, and Burt Reynolds and it's a football comedy. That will make over $40 million, most likely. Madagascar is a kids CGI animated movie being released over Memorial day weekend. I think that's also going to make $40 million. Star Wars will, of course.

Well, you gotta see Sandler's history of opening comedy movies.

The Waterboy - $39,414,071
Big Daddy - $41,536,370
Little Nicky - $16,063,904
Eight Crazy Nights (animated) - $9,434,175
Mr. Deeds - $37,162,787
Anger Management - $42,220,847
50 First Dates - $39,852,237

Except for Little Nicky and Eight Crazy Nights, he's really consistant. Now, The Longest Yard can be best compared to the Waterboy because their both about football. However, The Longest Yard has the advantage for a great Memorial Day weekend release date, more starpower (Chris Rock, Burt Reyonlds, etc.), etc. I think this will make over $40 million and continue the trend.

Thats a good point, i just think that Adam Sandler films arent good anymore and especially American Football films, theyre crap, and have gone down hill lately (critically).

I don't think Fantastic Four is a lock. Especially since it's opening up against War of the Worlds. The only advantage it has is the 4th of July Weekend, which might not help if everyone would rather see War of the Worlds.
