 Punch-Drunk Love
Punch-Drunk Love Quote: Punch-Drunk Love (2002) is an American romantic comedy-drama written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, starring Adam Sandler and Emily Watson. Anderson regulars Philip Seymour Hoffman and Luis Guzmán appear.
Sandler won positive reviews for his role in his first major departure from the broader comedies that had made him a star. Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times that "Sandler, liberated from the constraints of formula, reveals unexpected depths as an actor. Watching this film, you can imagine him in Dennis Hopper roles. He has darkness, obsession and power." He won Best Actor at the Gijón International Film Festival and received a Golden Globe nomination.
The film was produced by Revolution Studios and New Line Cinema, and was distributed by Columbia Pictures; it features the video artwork of Jeremy Blake in the form of visual interludes.

It's goofy and sweet. Not only is it my favorite P.T. Anderson movie, it's my favorite Adam Sandler movie. I give it an A.

Finally just saw this. C+. I was expecting a not-your-typical Adam Sandler film. But I wasn't expecting Paul Thomas Anderson to create a movie with a quality so much lower than Magnolia. I guess this is his attempt to mix a "stupid" movie with an "art" movie, except it doesn't really work.

I liked Sandler's 'nice guy' for once, and the film has more to say than the typical rom-com, but it downplays its sledgehammer pretensions by going berserk and super quirky. And in the end, it's just that: pretentious and pretty meandering. (And Anderson is one of my favorite directors. )
Disappointing.

Hm... Adam Sandler needs better roles like this. His performance was a very pleasant surprise.
Overall I enjoyed the film a lot, though I did have some problems with it.

Definitely Anderson's worst film out of the bunch, but that doesn't mean much, considering how exceptional Punch Drunk Love is. I for one like that pretentious quirkiness you guys speak of, the soundtrack that ranges from whimsical to poignant, and the really unique performances. Anderson rehashed the same story (which is why this one is weaker - it isn't very original) and fused it with interesting characters and quite a bit of style. I'd recommend it.

If Sandler and his company could write a film that met half way between his normal films and this one, I think you would have the perfect Adam Sandler performance. In this film, he doesn't show the same range dramatically as Jim Carrey did in say The Truman Show, but he comes close on several occasions. I also liked Philip Seymour Hoffman in his small role.
It's a very good film, but a little too quirky for it's own good.

Tried watching it with my parents a couple years ago, we turned it off about 20-25 minutes in. Maybe I need to rent it again, but for now...no. Not for me.

While hardly one of the year's best movies, I quite liked Punch Drunk Love -- it really was fun, romantic, and very angry. I even enjoyed the director's weird style this time out (I really didn't get what all the fuss was about with Boogie Nights and Magnolia - those were both mediocre at best) - the style actually gives you a punch-drunk feeling as an audience member. The story was pleasantly off-beat and strangely believable. I'm already an Adam Sandler fan and he does a nice job here.

A really good movie with a great performance by Adam Sandler. He definitely needs more roles like this and less of the kind he normally takes. A

Massive disappointment after Magnolia and Boogie Nights. A boring, pretentious waste of space.

Adam Sandler should have been nominated for best actor. a fantastic story, rich performances and Phillip Seymour Hoffman is awesome!!

 Re: Punch-Drunk Love
Sandler is great and rather touching, Anderson shoots the hell out of it and the score is kinda magnificent. I liked the film.
But there's something oddly dispiriting about the experience of watching it. I think it's because Anderson's camera is just too ambitious for such a small film. The picture is exhausting and airless.

Not my favorite Anderson film. But for sure an amazing change for him. Sandler was perfect and should have at least got some form of nomination.
Better than Sydney but thats it because BN, TWBB and Magnolia are all 10's

 Re: Punch-Drunk Love
In my opinion, PTA is in a whole different league than other directors. His films are absolutely incredible and mean so much more than most other films now in days. In short, I am a huge PTA fan.
That being said, I was disappointed by this film. No doubt, it was good, but not in a PTA kind of way. In my opinion, it doesn't stand out of the crowd in the way Magnolia, There Will Be Blood, and Boogie Nights do.
Like I said, still a good movie, but not a modern classic like I am used to seeing from PTA. 7.5/10

 Re: Punch-Drunk Love
I thought it was better than BOOGIE NIGHTS, but I only saw BN when I was younger and it was the first movie of his I saw. I'd need to see it again.

 Re: Punch-Drunk Love
well goodness. I was expecting to like this, as I have with Anderson's other work, but I had expected this to be one of his minor achievements, especially with somebody like Sandler on board. But the man not only told a really fascinating romantic dramedy well, but got an incredible performance out of a man who I didn't think was capable of such. And I'm not sure what it is about his style that I love so much, but there's something very... classic? ... about the way he sets up the camera and sets the mood for his scenes (that seven or eight minute shot of Sandler pacing about his room with the phone sex woman was awesome - on behalf of both Anderson and Sandler). Really great stuff.

And damnit Sandler, you could have a great career doing more parts like this!
