 Cold Mountain
Cold Mountain Quote: Cold Mountain is a 2003 war drama film written and directed by Anthony Minghella. The film is based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Charles Frazier. It stars Jude Law, Nicole Kidman and Renée Zellweger in lead roles as well as Natalie Portman, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Melora Walters, Jena Malone, and Giovanni Ribisi.
The film tells the story of a wounded deserter from the Confederate army close to the end of the American Civil War who is on his way to return to the love of his life, Ada Monroe.
Cold Mountain opened to great reviews from critics and won several major awards. It was also a success at the box office and became a sleeper hit grossing more than double its budget worldwide.

The non-existing chemistry between Law and Kidman hurts the movie badly. Unfortunately the whole movie's concept is that romance so it doesn't work at all. One more of those overrated flicks that got its five minutes of Oscar glory only because of lobbying and not because of quality. C-

I had a lot of problems with it, but for the most part it's a sumptuous, involving epic. Liked it a lot.

Cold Mountain: Best Picture Oscar Winner-To-Be!
Finally! A great drama to end the year. This was the one I sat through all those half-baked wannabe dramas this autumn waiting to see... and it's a historical melodrama to boot! The emotional tone is perfectly carried throughout this 155 minute tragic, beautiful film. I really liked the 19th century grrrrrl power - especially Rene Zellwegger, again outdoing herself (was that really the same girl in Chicago?). Lots of good unexpected choices among the supporting actors too. Boy, my top ten list is getting crowded - I got some work ahead of me whittling it down to just ten this year, cause Cold Mountain just vaulted to the upper realm - What a great year for movies!
8 out of 5.

Beautifully told but lacked any real substance.

I loved Cold Mountain, actually.
It was weird, because I felt incredibly involved in the whole thing despite the fact the main storyline (Kidman and Law's romance) doesn't really resonate.
Renee Zellweger deserved her Oscar.

The book is much better but I still liked the movie even though I thought Kidman was a little miscast. Natalie Portman would have been perfect as Ada is she was older. My grade: A-.

It is not perfect and for some reason the core of the story, the love story between Inman and Ada just didn't work for me for the lack of development and chemistry, but like Yoshue said above it did work as a supmtuous, lush and involving epic. It was simply beautiful to look at with breathtaking cinematography, great scenery, good editing and a beautiful score. The three main actors all did a good job with Zellweger standing out by far. Her Oscar win was completely well-deserved after she was snubbed for a win a year earlier for Chicago. It is a somewhat flawed, yet wonderful movie. Too bad it was snubbed for a BP nom for the likes of Seabiscuit and Master and Commander...

I didn't hate Cold Mountain by any means, but it was not a spectacular film either. It got a little boring and the performances were a little overrated. Shohreh from House of Sand and Fog or Holly Hunter deserved the Oscar that year.
