Chasing Amy

Quote:
Chasing Amy is a 1997 romantic comedy film written and directed by Kevin Smith. It is the third film in the View Askewniverse series. The film focuses on the relationship between a heterosexual man and a lesbian.

The film contains explicit sexual dialogue, and was originally inspired by a brief scene from an early movie by a friend of Smith's, Guinevere Turner's Go Fish, wherein one of the lesbian characters imagines her friends passing judgment on her for "selling out" by sleeping with a man. In real life, Kevin Smith was dating star Joey Lauren Adams at the time he was writing the script, which was also partly inspired by her.

The film won two awards at the 1998 Independent Spirit Awards (Best Screenplay for Smith and Best Supporting Actor for Jason Lee) and Joey Lauren Adams was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy/Musical.

I loved this movie. Fine performances all around (Yes, even Affleck) and I enjoyed it immensely.

Great performances by everyone. Especially Joey Lauren Adams. Awesome dialogues but I didn't really liked the ending with the threesome and one year later part. B+

Of the Jersey Five (Clerks, Mallrats, Amy, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob), I thought this was the weakest, but guess what? It's still miles ahead of many movies. Grade: A-

Rent Say Anything first. ;)

This is probably the best made of the "Jersey quintology," but I find Dogma and Clerks more entertaining. A-

Kevin Smith's most mature and best film. Blistering performances from all involved enhance the already amazing screenplay. Smith's direction is and always will be staler than two month old bread, but his style (or lack thereof) actually works for this kind of story. It's like a camera just dropped in on everyday life. A great film. Will hit close to home for anyone that's either had a major case of unrequited love or has felt inferior in a relationship. A

Best romantic comedy of the 90´s... At least for me.

Funny as hell, and never cheesy. There are no plot contrivances to keep the couple apart... their own mess-ups and very real problems are the ones that create the conflict. And all this told in a really entertaining, brilliant way... and oh so charming.

I'm going to fit this in sometime before I go to sleep tonight/tomorrow, and I hope it's as good as it looked in the previews that I saw.

Chasing Amy is an excellent film! It's so good that I'm going to have to figure out which movie to bump off my upcoming top 100 list.

To me a film can have no action and no real special effects and still be great. If that film can take it's characters and make them interesting by making them speak the way we know people do, then you are left with a fantastic film. So is the case with Kevin Smith's wonderful film Chasing Amy.

For anyone who thought that Ben Affleck couldn't act, watch this movie and enjoy how he plays Holden. He is honest in his approach to a character that is as complex as any great movie character. Also cast perfectly is Joey Lauren Adams as his girlfriend and Jason Lee is so good as Banky, his best friend and business partner that I really could have seen him with an Oscar nod that year.

Kevin Smith's strength is that he knows how people talk and he is honest in his assessment of his characters. And that is what makes this film the gem that it is. And did I mention that it is a wonderful romance and it is wickedly funny?

If all you've ever seen of Kevin Smith is Clerks, then check out this awesome flick. It certainly makes you appreciate how good Smith is at writing characters. A really great film.

Note**** If anyone is a true fan of Jaws ( and I, like Smith think it is the greatest movie ever made ) then watch for the scene in Jaws where Hooper and Quint compare wounds to be parodied hilariously in this film.

And Mav, I knew you 'd like this one. Wasn't the Jaws parody just perfect?

Yes indeed, I'm sure the Jaws fanboy in you came out like it did in me when that scene came on. When she put her leg up on the table, and even said "it looked like a kiddie scissor class cut it up for paper dolls", I was rolling.

I guess Appy and I are alone on this one. I thought this movie was terrible. I'm not a Smith fan, but I really liked Mallrats and thought Dogma was pretty decent. The rest of his movies are beyond me. But unlike Clerks, which I just found boring, I found Chasing Amy boring and bordering on offensive. I think the later Mallrats managed to tap into the bored teen talk much better by not heightening the sense of importance around it. Teens make everything into gossip and drama..in that order. Its not a bad thing, I did it too, but here Smith makes it mean something...which it doesn't. The final scene was so painfully corny and its really too bad Amy jumped teams. Made every guy on the planet think being gay is only so cause "you just haven't met the right heterosexual mate yet." Uhhhhhh?

I liked the peripheral characters and dialogue, which is why when Mallrats pushes them/that to the center its much more appreciation-worthy. Not a D-, but still,

C

I have to say, this movie gets better every time I see it. Originally I didn't like the second half very much, because it does get dead serious, but now after the 4th viewing I realize how wonderfully written and performed that entire sequence is. Chasing Amy is an incredible movie, with the acting, writing, characters, and just the way everything plays out. Love it.

The most dramatic of Kevin Smith's films and probably the best made as well. Solidly acted, with some comedic gems in the script, and containing very little of Jay and Silent Bob - all good points. Affleck is decent, but Joey Lauren Adams and Jason Lee are much better. The end is rather poor, though, and the whole thing is never really involving or entertaining - it moves quite slowly. All in all, a decent drama with some great comic elements.

Very good. Impeccable writing. Not as much comedy as I was expecting, but the drama and romance filled the void very well. I was a bit turned off by the ending, but it was still a solid piece of film. Highly recommended.

Post Re: Chasing Amy
I've now seen every Kevin Smith film, and he's been very hit-and-miss for me. Both Clerks movies were fantastic, Dogma/Mallrats/Zack&Miri were good, and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back/Jersey Girl kinda sucked. I never saw this because, honestly, it sounded pretty boring, but I can't believe what I'd been missing - far and away his best film to date. Just one of the best and most honest romantic comedies I've ever seen. The ranting dialogues have the usual Smith sense of humor and wit, but added to that is a touching feeling of pain, especially in all of the scenes with Joey Lauren Adams. If "Clerks" represented what Smith felt about his job, this expressed what he felt about his relationships. And he really lets it all out here. Great stuff.
