Happy Feet

Quote:
Happy Feet is a 2006 computer-animated comedy-drama film with music, directed and co-written by George Miller. It was produced at Sydney-based visual effects and animation studio Animal Logic for Warner Bros., Village Roadshow Pictures and Kingdom Feature Productions and was released in North America on November 17, 2006. It is the first animated feature film produced by Kennedy Miller in association with visual effects/design company Animal Logic.

Though primarily an animated film, Happy Feet does incorporate live action humans in certain scenes. The film was simultaneously released in both conventional theatres and in IMAX 2D format. The studio had hinted that a future IMAX 3D release was a possibility. However, Warner Bros., the film’s production company, was on too tight of a budget to release Happy Feet in IMAX digital 3D. Happy Feet won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and was nominated for the Annie Award for Best Animated Feature.

The film was dedicated in memory of Nick Enright, Michael Jonson, Robby McNeilly Green, and Steve Irwin.

Happy Feet... in IMAX. Great stuff.

The voice work is mostly hilarious, with Robin Williams really delivering with several characters. The musical scenes are very fun, and the movie manages to be as touching - if not more - than most animated films. Interesting secondary plot (which is sort of political and perhaps even preachy) and some definite slamming on conservatism and religious extremism (Pay attention to what the "head" penguin says - you'll notice some especially selected diction, allusions, and quite a bit of familiar rhetoric). I'm not sure how I feel about it being in the movie, but this is definitely the best thing since Finding Nemo. Overall, a beautiful, laugh-out-loud wonder.

I really enjoyed this flim. Robin Williams is at awsome at voice acting, Ramon and Lovelace were hilarious. The animation was insane, the best I've ever seen. This is easily the best Kids film of the year, and in my top 10 for the thousands

this will end pixars dominance at the oscars , and win best Animated Feature

Pretty much agree with what James Berardinelli wrote in his review. The first 80 minutes, containing some of the very best animations I've ever seen, were great. It just got way too heavy-handed once the topic of food starvation was brought up. And the use of live action human beings is weird, especially with the helicopter guys. There are other ways to get to the happy ending instead of showing some global discussion. The shift in tone made the whole story feel incoherent. I could only give it a B.

Yea, the more I think about it, the less I like the final act. It really doesn't suite the film and is not only blunt, but completely out of place here. My earlier grade stands with regards to the first half of the film - when penguins are acting like they should in an animated comedy - but the ending really destroys the mood. It just doesn't fit.

New grade: B

Agreed, except B+

The ending left me fairly cold, although I pretty much loved everything before it

It went exactly how I thought it would for the first half, then things got weeird. Mumble making Gloria leave... I really, really did not get that. The Penguin Lord of the Rings was a bit goofy but I was cool, but it just kept getting more and more bonkers as it went on. I really liked it a lot... I think, it just was not at allll what I was expecting. I sure could see a lot of it freaking out little kids too.

Not sure how I feel about the movie. FIrst half was fun, dancing all that good stuff, then you started to deal with pretty heavy issues such as religion and conservationism. Too much for a kids movie. I really didnt like the slams on religion that the movie took, nor did I like how they perpetuated some of the stereotypes with the mother-father.

It was a gorgeous movie, the voice acting as top notch..and the first 70 minutes of the movie was just fun.

So I'll give it a B.

Amazingly horrendous. It would have to rank in the top 10 worst animated films I've ever seen. Sure, the dancing penguins were cute - for about 10 minutes and then they were mind-numbingly dull and headache inducing.

So, the good things: the voice work, the animation and the "cinematography" if you will.
The bad: everything else. Boring, too heavy handed, the "real" humans, the ending, the ... pretty much 75% of the film was just horrendous.

I liked it. The animation was stunning, the movie's pretty funny and I didn't really mind the whole live human aspect or the final part of the film. It's decent. B-

I thought it was odd. An odd mess, really.

The first 45 minutes or so of the film are quite enjoyable, with some good music (which caught me off guard a bit at first with its Moulin Rouge-esque arrangements) and a lot of the 'be proud because you're unique' message. Very cute and harmless.

But then there's a shift in tone and story in which Mumble must travel, with a band of curiously Hispanic penguins, to a creepily sexed-up prophet penguin, leading to the capture of Mumble and his confinement as he begins to hallucinate.

It's weird.

It's really weird.

And on top of a thin story, the film feels it necessary to do some not-so-subtle liberal preaching. It's not preaching with which I disagree, per se, but in context, it just feels incredibly out-of-place.

It's beyond me how this has garnered great reviews.

This is the kind of children's propaganda we need more of! Personally I felt the added "weight" of the movie didn't detract from the experience.... but that's just me.

these are some of the things I found philosophically/socially significant -

- we need a more empathetic perspective on immigration
- we need a less invasive/destructive way of conducting our society
- there exists an unending deference to the ways of old by the elders; tradition is espoused as gospel
- conformity is heralded as necessary to hold society together..... but isn't there room for different perspectives?

also, the penguins (especially the baby ones) were damn cute.

 The more I think about this movie, the more I feel it is pretty much the strangest animated film. Ever. People need to see this, if only to see just how unorthodox it is.

Yeah, it really got...kind of weird. Around the time that Mumble was banished from the community, I was just thinking...ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

I give it a B. I liked it more than I thought, but like everyone else, near the end, I felt myself thinking "Uhh...".

Wow, this COMPLETELY took me off guard. I guess I'm the only person here that really, really loved it. I guess it helps that I had low expectations even before I read about the nutty final act. The only scene that really made me go "WTF?" during that act was Mumble making Gloria go away, for which my best explanation would be that he didn't want her to go with him, but even then you'd think he'd just tell her to not come, but...yeah, better not overthink that. Oh, and the little live-actrion "Save the Antarctic!" montage at the end. However, I really liked the other usage of live-action at the end. Someone said it gave the humans a really alien feel, and I like that idea behind it.

I was just totally into it unlike any him I've seen in theaters in a while. I'm guessing I'm the only that got a little gooey inside when Mumble started tap-dancing again in the zoo, and the little girl went to get her mom as everyone started looking. . .

My #3 film so far this year. ****/****

Ya gotta love Brit humor to truly enjoy FA, and I've noticed that kinda love is not terribly abundant on this board...
