The Shawshank Redemption

Quote:
The Shawshank Redemption is a 1994 American drama film written and directed by Frank Darabont starring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman.

Adapted from the Stephen King novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption, the film portrays the story of Andy Dufresne, a banker who spends nearly two decades in Shawshank State Prison for the murder of his wife and her lover despite his claims of being innocent. During his time at the prison, he befriends a fellow inmate, Ellis "Red" Redding, and finds himself protected by the guards after the warden begins using him in his money laundering operation.

Despite a lukewarm box office reception that was barely enough to cover its budget, the film received favorable reviews from critics, multiple award nominations, and has since enjoyed a remarkable life on cable television, VHS, DVD, and Blu-ray. It was included in the American Film Institute's 100 Years…100 Movies 10th Anniversary Edition.

Then I suppose that's good, because I'm sure there is more than just one girl who saw this movie.

If I made a list of my 50 favorite films of all-time, this would probably be somewhere up there. For such a long movie, it has a tremendous rewatchability factor (and who wouldn't when it's on TNT every other day).

I was only kidding. Its a good movie. I dont love it, but then again, its been a very long time since I have seen it. Right now, I seriously would give it a B, based on what I remember. Just good.

Middling above average melodrama, nothing special. C+

Morgan Freeman was great of course, he almost always is. Tim Robbins though had his usual glazed over look. The writing was not bad, though it fell back on a variety of prison movie cliches like the old timer who feels more at home in prison than in the outside world. We're supposed to believe that even though a terrible injustice was done to him, that Robbins was a better man for the experience. Yeah right. I'd like to send each of the fans of this movie to prison fo 20 years and see if they think that is worth becoming a better person. :)

Anyway, decently done, above average acted, but cliche ridden and hokey.

Id like to give it more. But at the end there are a few mistakes. Good film though.

Overated junk. Filled with so many cliches it's uncountable. Horrible acting (Morgan Freeman plays Morgan Freeman, Tim Robbins does nothing but mumbles, the others do OK). Horrible story (it's so long and dragged out, stupid too). I hate it.

A good Hollywood fairy tale, but it isn't the best movie of all time and also not very close to that status. The "twist" ending is a bit unrealistic, but yet makes you smile. It is one of the best feel-good movies ever made, that's for certain. Robbins and Freeman are equally good, but I have seen both better too. Overall, I enjoyed it, but I didn't love it.

Stephen King's best adapted movie, 13 July 1999

Misery and Stand By Me were the best adaptations up until this one, now you can add Shawshank to that list.

This is simply one of the best films ever made and I know I am not the first to say that and I certainly won't be the last. The standing on the IMDb is a true barometer of that. #3 as of this date and I'm sure it could be number 1. So I'll just skip all the normal praise of the film because we all know how great it is. But let me perhaps add that what I find so fascinating about Shawshank is that Stephen King wrote it.

King is one of the best writers in the world. Books like IT and the Castle Rock series are some of the greatest stories ever told. But his best adaptations are always done by the best directors. The Shining was brilliantly interpreted by Kubrick and of course the aforementioned Misery and Stand By Me are both by Rob Reiner. Now Frank Darabont comes onto the scene and makes arguably the best King film ever. He seems to understand what King wants to say and he conveys that beautifully. And now I find out that Darabont is the one behind the helm for "The Green Mile". And I can't wait. It should be a great film.

I'm not going to say any more about this film, it has already been said, but just suffice to say that I am glad that Forrest Gump won best picture in 94. I would have been equally glad if Pulp Fiction or Shawshank would have won. It is that good of a movie and one that should be appreciated.

Well, aside from Brooks (the 'redeeming' factor of this movie), the acting is pretty bad. Morgan Freeman plays himself (mentor kind of guy), Tim whispers through the movie, Tommy overacts, Norton has no emotion. People seem to like this movie just because it's a trend but there is really nothing here to like.

and btw it's Stress.

I heard so much buzz about this film, so I decided to rent it, and this movie is phenomenal in every way. Freeman is amazing. The story line is great and the message it conveys is great. Almost perect. In my top 10.
