 Perfume: The Story of a Murderer
Perfume: The Story of a Murderer Quote: Perfume: The Story of a Murderer is a 2006 German thriller film directed by Tom Tykwer and written by Andrew Birkin, Bernd Eichinger and Tykwer. It is based on the 1985 novel Perfume by Patrick Süskind. Set in 18th century France, the film tells the story of Jean-Baptiste Grenouille (Ben Whishaw), an olfactory genius, and his homicidal quest for the perfect scent. The film also stars Dustin Hoffman, Alan Rickman and Rachel Hurd-Wood; John Hurt provides narration.
The film was made on a budget of €50 million, making it one of the most expensive German films. Principal photography began on July 12, 2005 and concluded on October 16, 2005; filming took place in Spain, Germany and France.
Perfume was released on September 14, 2006 in Germany. It grossed $135,039,943 worldwide, of which $53,125,663 was made in Germany. Critics' reviews of the film were mixed; the consensus was that the film had strong cinematography and acting but suffered from an uneven screenplay.

It was okay. I expected more after the hype it got here. The lead actor (forgot his name) gives a great performance tough. And the movie is wonderful to look at. But it drags too much. Had my problems with the ending too. B-

Oops.
I made a mistake on my 2006 Top Ten Film list* -- Perfume: Story of a Murderer clearly needs to be on it...
Like it or not (and either is a distinct possibility), Perfume is a special, special movie. It is an astounding telling of an astounding tale. I haven't seen director Tom Tykwer's other famous work, Run, Lola, Run (actually, I'm consciously saving it for a rainy day sometime well into the future), but his visual storytelling ability is clearly at the genius level; a true artist. The way in which Tykwer communicates the, oh so essential, sense of smell and the esoterica of the perfumers' art, is a quite simply a tour de force.
Those who don't allow themselves the chance to breathe in the miraculous scent of Perfume are denying themselves the full range of human experience...
9 out of 5.

Unfortunately, Dreamgirls, an amazing film, has had to be shifted to position #11 for the year 2006...}

Its really a fantastic movie with a very interesting story. At first i had problem with the "orgy" scene but now that i gave it much thought i really liked it. Of course it was way over the top, and i mean WAY OVER THE TOP but it worked perfectly.

This is easily the most bizarre film I've ever seen. EVER. I can't even decide if I loved it or hated it. Need to think it over, I think. It's just... wow.

I thought it over. It's just a really bizarre film. I didn't love it because it's ridiculously long and the middle third of the film is boring, but the first third and last third are just great. Ben Whishaw gives one of the more better performances in recent memory. He's just perfect for the role and does an excellent job. The rest of the cast is also top notch. I think the film just goes a little over the top sometimes, and that ending? I did not see that coming at all.

I saw this theatrically back in January. I loved it. It was incredibly strange, yet incredibly compelling. The cinematography and production design was flawless and the performances were all excellent. It's an underrated gem and one of last year's best.
