Saw this tonight and laughed my ass off!
I've also never seen the TV series, but didn't find that a handicap in the least to get into this comedy gem - though, now I gotta see the series on DVD, and SOON!
Amy Sedaris is just freakin' hilarious (...and I do mean freakin'!)
I'm trying to think of a funnier movie this year, but no luck -- this ones the winner!
7 out of 5.

Is there anything you don't give over a five to?

Definitely my kind of humour.
Amy Sedaris really does an amazing job. She really invests herself into the character.

Quite hilarious and extremely entertaining. I had never seen an episode of the show before so I was plesantly surprised by this one. It had many laugh-out-loud moments and Amy Sedaris was fantastic. I'd give it a solid B.

Some of it's pretty funny. Amy Sedaris is a riot when she's got the right lines. But it really derails, hardcore, about halfway through the film, in terms of both plot and comedy, and never recovers.

Not as good as the show (which must be seen by all), but I'll give it a B.

 Re: Strangers with Candy
Never watched the show, but this is occasionally a riot. It's sort of hit or miss, and the plot falls to pieces - not even in a manner forgivable for a film of this nature. Amy Sedaris is talented, in any event, though the writing could've been tweaked. They just ran a bit low on material/inspiration, I suppose.
A generous **.5 seems fair.
