Every bit as good as the first film. It's less laugh-out-loud riotous -- more chuckles than belly laughs, though those do come -- but it's more poignant than you might expect. On the Smith scale, it's more Chasing Amy than Mallrats.

And it's worth $8 to see Randal's reenactment of The Lord of the Rings.

After everyone sees this they could mock me, but I actually got a little teary-eyed during the (spoiler)[spoil]jail cell[/spoil] scene between Randal and Dante. Jeff Anderson fucking nailed that.

I haven't seen the original Clerks, and of all of Smith's stuff I've only seen Dogma and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. (both of which I really enjoy). I'll probably convince my friend to use his free rentals at Hollywood Video to get Mallrats and Clerks and whatnot. But anyway, should I wait to see the original Clerks before this? I'm suspecting the answer is no, but I'd hate to be proven wrong at the theater.

Having not seen Clerks II, I'd expect that a viewing of the original is not a necessity, but a great suggestion.

Randal Graves: That look was so gay I thought Sam was gonna tell the little hobbits to go for a walk so he could saunter over to Frodo and suck his cock. Now *that* would have been an Academy Award worthy ending.

Hobbit Lover: Hey, they're not gay. They're hobbits.

Not as funny as the original, although there are some insanely hilarious bits (porch monkeys! interspecies love! Buffalo Bill reenactment! One ring to rule them all!). However, Clerks II is surprisingly poignant and touching. The relationships between Dante/Randal and Dante/Becky are believable and effective. Acting is not one of Clerks II's strong points: Brian O'Halloran and Jeff Anderson haven't really improved a great deal since the original film. As a contrast, Rosario Dawson (continuing a streak of impressive performances that started with 25th Hour) is wonderful. Her strong performance is the reason we end up so invested in Becky and Dante's relationship. Overall, I really enjoyed it. B

The original CLERKS is loved by many, it's what made most Kevin Smith fans adore the writer/director so dearly. CLERKS was followed by the critically bashed MALLRATS, which is a fan-boy favorite. The next two films were critic darlings; Chasing Amy, and Dogma. Both films recieved excellent reviews. After Dogma, Kevin Smith gave his most popular characters their own film, entitled JAY & SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK. After that, Smith decided to take a turn in his direction style. Shying away from the language and sex humor, he made the PG-13 film JERSEY GIRL. The film has it's fans, but most of Smith's fans loathe the film. Now come his first sequel; CLERKS II. The trailers made it look like an all gross out film, much like most teen comedies these days. The plot centers around Dante and Randal (Brian O'Halloran and Jeff Anderson both reprising their roles from the first film), now thirty, and still working at the Quick Stop. The film opens as the Quick Stop burns down, and Dante and Randal now need to work somewhere else. Their pick is Mooby's, a McDonald's of sorts fast food resturant. There, we meet two new interesting characters, Becky (played by Rosario Dawson), and Elias (played by Trevor Fehrman). The film chronicels the last day of Dante's job, he's leaving with his fianee to Florida the next day.

This is easily one of the best Kevin Smith films ever. I believe it even passes the first CLERKS in terms of quality. Don't get me wrong, the first one was absolutely fantastic, but this is more of a mix of CLERKS and CHASING AMY, a hilarious comedy with mixes of emoitional drama thrown in. It's sure to please all fans of the first film. All the performances are perfect, Trevor Fehrman steals the show as the Lord of the Rings obsessed Elias. He's hysterical! Just wait till you hear about Pillow Pants, you'll be rolling in the aisles! Rosario Dawson is also perfectly cast as Dante's love interest Becky. She turns out a great performance, and is really memorable. The cast regulars are all fantastic, Jason Mewes, Kevin Smith, Brian O'Halloran, and Jeff Anderson all reprise their roles from the first film. There are also some great cameos, some include the always hilarious Wanda Sykes, Jason Lee, and Ben Affleck.

CLERKS II is the funniest film of the year, and one of the best. Surpassing the original, it's my second favorite Kevin Smith film; the first being Chasing Amy. I recommend it to all, it's a hilarious, moving film.

9/10 (A-)

I'm shocked -- I thought I was building up a picture of your taste in comedy -- and now this!!!

(Of course, I haven't seen it, after being burned by the touted J&SBSB - the most lame-ass comedy I've ever seen, I swore I would never see another Smith film...)

I didn't really like Jay & Silent Bob Strikes Back. It was alright, but it wasn't very funny, and it was pretty stupid. If you enjoyed Clerks and Chasing Amy, you'll like Clerks II.

I half-expected Clerks II to be more Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back than Clerks, but in the end, it ended up being more Chasing Amy in being emotional and heart-felt in the end. Sure, there's plenty of comedy, plenty of memorable scenes (especially the LOTR reenactment), and the cameos are there, but in no way forced (like J&SBSB). By the end, everything felt right. It should have been really sappy, but it ended up being a fitting end to the Clerks (and Askewniverse) series.

And, Rosario Dawson and Trevor Fehrman fit in nicely.

Grade: A-

Clerks: A+
Mallrats: B+
Chasing Amy: A-
Dogma: A-
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back: B+
Jersey Girl: C+
Clerks II: A-

You don't always need to bash them, though. You just don't like that kind of humor.
