Per un pugno di dollari [A Fistful of Dollars]
A Fistful of Dollars Quote: Fistful of Dollars (Italian: Per un pugno di dollari) is a 1964 Italian Spaghetti Western film directed by Sergio Leone and starring Clint Eastwood alongside Gian Maria Volonté, Marianne Koch, Wolfgang Lukschy, Sieghardt Rupp, José Calvo, Antonio Prieto, and Joseph Egger. Released in Italy in 1964 then in the United States in 1967, it initiated the popularity of the Spaghetti Western film genre. It was followed by For a Few Dollars More (1965) and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966), also starring Eastwood. Collectively, the films are commonly known as the "Dollars Trilogy" or "The Man With No Name Trilogy". This film is an unofficial remake of the Akira Kurosawa film Yojimbo (1961), which itself drew inspiration from earlier Westerns. In the United States, the United Artists publicity campaign referred to Eastwood's character in all three films as the "Man with No Name".
As one of the first Spaghetti Westerns to be released in the United States, many of the European cast and crew took on American sounding stage names. These included Leone himself ("Bob Robertson"), Gian Maria Volonté ("Johnny Wels"), and composer Ennio Morricone ("Dan Savio").
A Fistful of Dollars was shot in Spain, mostly near Hoyo de Manzanares close to Madrid, but also (like its two sequels) in the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park in Almería province.
Before this film Clint Eastwood had especially been known from Rawhide. Ty Hardin, at that time well-known for playing the protagonist in the TV show Bronco, who appeared in several other European westerns at about the same time, claimed later on he had as well had an opportunity to get the role which started Clint Eastwood's unique career in cinema.

It's one of Leone's lesser efforts. It is a decent western with a cool-as-ever performance by Eastwood and a nice and compliacted storyline. The villains were somewhat bland sadly. Technically, it is good. The cinematography is nice and Morricone provides a good (though not that memorable score). There is not much else to be said here. It goes for a fairly realistic look, but out of all Leone westerns, the asbence of blood after shooting bothered me the most here.

While Leone's following efforts are more technically accomplished, this is Leone's myth making at its most pure. It is set in a town that might as well be nowhere, a place where gods can fight while mere mortals can only stand and watch - and die. Only once do people die without money changing hands - and a price is paid as a result. It does drag a bit in the second half, but that in part is due to some necessary plot choices that are required to set up the final gunfight. I highly recommend this as well as the following films in the "trilogy".
Side note: This is a western remake of Kurosawa's Yojimbo, retaining the basic plot with only minor changes, although thematically it is quite different.

An underrated Western gem that really displays the Man with No Name in his most heroic form, and paints his antagonist as the most villainous. It is masterfully crafted, and highly well structured that leads us to a very satsfying climax.

It's no The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, but really, what is? Still stylish and exciting. Clint at his purest and coolest.
My friend doesn't like these spaghetti westerns because "nothing's at stake" in them, but I say phooey to that. Sometimes it's cool just to see Clint shoot people for two hours. Not everything has to be solemn and dour.
