X2

Quote:
X2 (often promoted as X2: X-Men United) is a 2003 superhero film based on the fictional characters the X-Men. Directed by Bryan Singer, it is the second film in the X-Men film series. It stars an ensemble cast including Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Famke Janssen, Anna Paquin, Shawn Ashmore, Aaron Stanford, Brian Cox, Rebecca Romijn, James Marsden, Halle Berry and Kelly Hu. The plot, inspired by the graphic novel God Loves, Man Kills, pits the X-Men and their enemies, the Brotherhood, against the genocidal Colonel William Stryker (Brian Cox). He leads an assault on Professor Xavier's school to build his own version of Xavier's mutant-tracking computer Cerebro, in order to destroy every mutant on Earth.

Development phase for X2 began shortly after X-Men. David Hayter and Zak Penn wrote separate scripts, combining what they felt to be the best elements of both scripts into one screenplay. Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris were eventually hired for rewrite work, changing characterizations of Beast, Angel and Lady Deathstrike. Sentinels and the Danger Room were set to appear before being deleted because of budget concerns. Filming began in June 2002 and ended that November. Most of the filming took place at Vancouver Film Studios, the largest soundstage in North America. Production designer Guy Hendrix Dyas adapted similar designs of John Myhre from the previous film. X2 was released in the United States on May 2, 2003 and became both a critical and financial success, earning eight nominations at the Saturn Awards and grossing approximately $407 million worldwide.

Besides the two Spider-Man films, this is the best comic book adaptation yet.

It's near-perfect.

The highest quality superhero movie ever made, without a doubt. As entertaining as the Spider-Man flicks are, they can't compare to this.

One of the best sequels and the best comic book films of all time. Everything the first film did well, this one did better. Story, character, action, effects - all are fantastic. The first scene with Nightcrawler in the White House is one of my favourites from any film. And the scene where Magneto escapes from prison. And the scene where Pyro lights it up. This movie is full of memorable scenes. It's a toss-up between this and Batman Begins for the best comic book film ever.

Better than first film, but incredibly overlong. The final scenes at Alkali Base drag to the point of almost-boredom.

If every superhero film were like this, I'd be very very happy.

I'd rank it third after Batman Begins and Spider-man 2, but I think it is much more consistent than either, especially SM2 (as much as I love it, it has it's.....moments). My only complaint, as with the first, is that it focused too much on Wolverine than on the X-Men. Certainly once everything took off the X-Men were the forefront of the story, but Wovlie's subplot was much more centerstage than anybody else's.

Entertaining enough but lacks the weight and heart of "X2". More underwhelming than disappointing for me. A step down from the second one IMHO. Still pretty good overall, though. ***1/2 / *****

I really don't remember all that much about this movie other than giving it a B. It was good and entertaining enough, but I remember losing interest towards the end and getting sick of them running around that underground fortress or whatever the hell it was.

The original set the bar high. Very high. Only Spider-Man has surpassed it by the time X2 was released. I never expected this one to top the original. Thankfully, I was wrong.

Bryan Singer proves once again that he is one of the best currently working directors in Hollywood by creating his third masterpiece (after The Usual Suspects and X-Men) with this film. What he and the screenwriters did with this film was, they took the essence of what made the first movie so good and expanded upon it. They took the excitement and the great action of the first and they gave even more of it. They took the estabilished characters and instead of piling up tons of new ones (see X3), they gradually continued developing the characters further. The Pyro/Rogue/Iceman trio is well-set here. Wolverine gets further development. Magneto is once again very ambiguous. The one major addition of Nightcrawler works well. Alan Cumming is great in the role and the action scenes with him are splendid. The performances by the cast are great. Wolverine still leads the pack, while Aaron Standford's Pyro provides a surprisingly excellent turn. The scene in which he "fires up" is astounsing.

Brian Cox makes a great madman. The best thing about him is that he is human. They did not just set up Magneto as the main baddie against the X-Men in this one again, no the makers went a different, a better route.

Despite the long running time, the pacing is always on fire and the movie never drags. The showdown at the military basis is one of the best showdowns in film history. The Lady Deathstrike/Wolverine battle is excellent and surpasses anything in the first film. The jets chase, the attack on the school...all of these scenes are perfectly staged action pieces. Not that the action in X3 was less impressive, it was just never well-paced and staged.

This movie is like X-Men, a perfect summer blockbuster with some more depth to it and it surpasses the original on most levels. Currently, only Spider-Man can beat it to me as the best comic adaptation ever. Not even Spidey's sequel could pass X2 which conveniently resides in my all-time Top 10 at #8.

The best of all three of the xmen. I give it an A. The best comic book movie ever made bar none. Wolverine's backstory is very interesting, and the special effects are great. I loved it. Also, Nightcrawler is a pimp...

A big improvement over the first one. Awesome action scenes and pretty intense at times. Loved the fight between Wolverine and that women (no clue what her name was). A-

Not as good as either spider man, TDK, perhaps a few other superhero flicks, but strong nonetheless.

Exactly. If they don't know how to behave, and feel OK offending others, they get their ass kicked, so they'll think next time before opening their rotten mouths.
