Quote:
See No Evil is a 2006 horror film directed by Gregory Dark, written by Dan Madigan, produced by Joel Simon, and starring professional wrestler Kane. It is the first major film produced by WWE Films and was released by Lions Gate Entertainment on May 19, 2006.

The film went through many different working titles before the final title of See No Evil was chosen. The original working title of the film was Eye Scream Man, but was later changed to The Goodnight Man, then Goodnight before settling on See No Evil.

The MPAA gave the movie an R rating for "strong gruesome violence and gore throughout, language, sexual content and some drug use".

SEE NO EVIL - 8/10 (A-)
Wow, this movie shocked the hell out of me! I thought it looked like a horrible, dumb horror flick. I've got to say that the gore in this movie was absolutely amazing. It had some absolutely great, creative kills and a couple hilarious ones. This is by far the goriest film of the year thus far, and I can't see another film coming near it. I saw it with a nearly sold out audience, it was a free screening, and they absolutely loved it. Some people were screaming, some were laughing at some of the down right hilarious things in the movie. Hopefully it will do good this weekend, the WWE should have a great fan-base, and hopefully they'll turn out for this great horror flick. By far the best horror film of the year, and the most entertaining :) Definitely recommended for all horror fans!

A-, eh? I'm excited to see it, but I don't expect much from it except 90 minutes of gore.

It's pretty much a long lost Friday the 13th film, but with a bigger budget and more style. Terrible acting and screenplay, but fantastic kills, a great villian, and some inspired direction make it work. The director pulls out pretty much every camera trick in the book, and it works. It's wonderful and a lot of fun to look at. The violence isn't as shockingly gory or graphic as you may have heard (which seems to be a strange trend recently), but it does have a level of ferocity that I haven't seen in a horror film in a long time. Seriously, people are absolutely destroyed in this film. It's just vicious. The kills are extremely creative and fun, too, which is something we haven't seen since the F13 films. For example, a woman that uses a cell phone frequently throughout the film has it slowly rammed down her throat, and an animal lover is hung upside down while a group of stray dogs devour her.

So, yeah... if you go in expecting anything more than something on par with most 80's slashers, you'll be disappointed. Slasher fans and style whores will find a lot to like here, though.

Oh, and the final minute or so is absolutely hilarious. I've never seen a film take such sadistic glee in just completely demolishing a character before. It's positivley inspired in it's lunacy.

I think it is pretty much impossible to impress horror fans like us anymore when it comes to violence in horror films...

You're probably right.

I'm sure your average filmgoer would be positively horrified by what's shown in this film. For a horror fan, though, it's nothing new.

Just see it before it leaves theaters. I'd compare it's performance at my theater so far to High Tension or Club Dread.

See No Evil (2006, B-):

Wrassler Kane wreaks havoc as a serial killer stalking 8 "teens" in the Vince McMahon produced 'See No Evil.' The end result is derivative, poorly written amd acted, and over-edited but still manages to be fun in a "low expectations" sort of way. It follows every slasher movie cliche in the book to be sure, but the direction by former porn kingpin Gregory Dark is decently stylized (enough with the quick cuts though), the production design is to die for, and the many chase scenes are decently exciting. The film also gets points for some wicked bits of irony and gallows humor, as if the film is acknowledging its low status in the world of cinema.

Dark also seems to be attempting to make a point with the film. More specifically, that he has been unjustly ridiculed in the past for directing unsavory, immoral pornography that is viewed only in the privacy of one's own home but the film in which he makes his big-screen debut is played across the country in cineplexes everywhere despite featuring brutally violent scenes involving the picking out of eyeballs, hooks being shoved through chins, and bodies otherwise being dismembered in various sickly demented ways.

Edit: Saw the movie for a second time and my opinion has changed for the better. Below is my review.

REVIEW:

Gregory Dark's horror film has eight delinquents stalked by a hulking maniac in this WWE-produced venture starring the wrestling icon known as "Kane."

Eight prison inmates are given the opportunity to participate in the renovation of an old hotel as a way of knocking time off their respective sentences. They are led by a wounded (both physically and mentally) cop (Steve Vidler) who had his hand hacked off four years earlier by a deranged psychopath named Jacob Goodnight while rescuing a now eyeless victim (hence the title). He is joined by a woman named Hannah (Tiffany Lamb) whom we learn next to nothing about aside from her name.

Once at the hotel, the group is told by its caretaker that the top floor is off-limits due to fire damage years earlier and then left to its own devices. Naturally, the inmates do anything but listen to what they have been told and almost immediately make their way to the top floor. One group plans on looking for a safe supposedly filled with millions in cash while others plan on throwing the party of a lifetime. Unbeknownst to them, Jacob Goodnight himself calls the hotel home and is none too happy that his haven has been disturbed. Stalking, slashing, eye-removing, limb dismemberment (replete with the requisite blood and guts), and the occasional flashback to Goodnight's unscrupulous childhood ensue.

Slasher movies like this one still can work when done right. The audience for them has dwindled in recent years with the advent of the now itself fading J-horror (Japanese) fad that remade the likes of 'The Ring' and 'The Grudge' for English-speaking audiences More recently, the torture-horror phase has stepped with films like the 'Saw' franchise and 'Hostel' leading the way. What director Dark (making his mainstream debut after helming music videos for the likes of Britney Spears, Xzibit, and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony along with a long career directing pornography) has created from Dan Madigan's screenplay (Madigan has up until now only written storylines for the WWE/WWF) is a film that attempts to merge the slasher sensibilities of films like 'Scream' with the gory torture aspects of 'Wolf Creek' and its ilk. Does it work?

Much to my surprise, the answer is mostly yes, it does indeed work. Sure, the plot is, as already established, well-worn. The acting isn't anything to be lauded (to be expected in a film produced by a guy who himself is an over-the-top persona), and the dialogue is nothing more than serviceable.

What then, makes the film as a whole work? Director Dark lends the film such a dark and dank atmosphere that even if nothing on-screen is really all that frightening, it works at least to get your adrenaline pumping because he brings such ceaseless energy to his direction. Even the seemingly mundane expositional scenes are rendered entertaining because of his sometimes overzealous use of imagery (flies and other disgusting creatures make so many appearances they deserve a SAG credit) and music video techniques such as slow-motion, jump cuts, and obtuse close-ups that could uglify even the most beautiful of people. His zestful crescendo of energy reaches a fever pitch during the gleefully gory finale that I forbid myself from spoiling. Let me just say it will have you laughing while simultaneously becoming more and more grossed-out as the seconds tick by. Be sure to stay after the credits for an irony-laden scene.

In the end, it is by virtue of director Dark's successful approach to direction, that the film is worth seeing for those who consider themselves horror fans. Others may just be too horrified by what passes for acting to enjoy the b-movie within.

Saw the movie. I was surprised at how slow this film was, for the first 20-30 minutes. It took time to build characters, without really building characters (didn't particularily like the little snapshots of the characters for the first 15 minutes), so it ended up being on the boring side for me. But once it got going, it was good fun. It's not the best in the genre (slasher), but it definitely held its own. For a film made, in part, by the WWE, I was really surprised and glad at how well-made it was. I really expected a lot worse.

Kane makes for a great villain, no doubt at all. The kills are great. The acting is superb.

Did I say superb? I meant awful! But everyone has said that, and I'm very much echoing the opinions of everyone else who has seen it. And what really surprised me was how they explained the character of Jacob Goodnight. I almost didn't expect that, and I was happy when I saw it.

On its own, the film isn't the greatest. As a debut film for Kane and for the WWE Films, it's really quite good. Overall, I'm giving it a B.

Very, very bad.

I'll elaborate if I must... in time.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but the gore really was the best part. Seriously, the movie was about as scary as Halloween Horror Night at Universal Studies. With cheaper production values.

Like most said before me, this is just a very decent simple slasher that takes no prisoners when it comes to killing the victims. The backstory of the killer is very generic and something you've seen hundreds of times before, as is the killer itself. The way, however, in which he disposes of the victims is pretty great, especially the big with the cellphone. The ending part with the villain getting destyoed in every possible way was great fun. There was some applause during the screening (Keep in mind, I saw it at a festival with genre fans exclusively). It was fine and good watch for parties.

Siiiiiick.

Basically, what has already been said: Kane is great, the kills are fantastic, it's fun to watch, it's not really poorly made at all. It didn't really break any new grounds, it's just a fun horror flick with loads of carnage.

Plus Points

Kane looks pretty badass

Minus Points

I thought Horrors were suppose to horrify?
Even by the worst standards of the genre the characters in this are hideously threadbare and bland
A softcore porn movie would have be filmed better.
And the main storyline would probably be better as well.
Its a movie clearly up its on ass so that it may smell its self declared brilliance even more clearly.

Overall F

Yeah, I kind of dug it. Typical slasher, but so sick and fucked up to enjoy. Filming and acting wasn't nearly as bad as I expected either. Surprisingly, the very best horror film of this year if The Descent counts as 2005.

The after credits scene was the most random, hilarious thing I've seen in a long time. I cracked up high-pitch style.
