Dangerous Liaisons
Dangerous LiaisonsQuote: Dangerous Liaisons is a 1988 drama film based upon Christopher Hampton's play, Les liaisons dangereuses, which in turn was a theatrical adaptation of the 18th-century French novel Les Liaisons dangereuses by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos.
Director Stephen Frears, having enjoyed successes in British cinema with My Beautiful Laundrette (1985), Prick Up Your Ears (1987) and Sammy and Rosie Get Laid (1987), made his Hollywood début with this film.
The performances of Glenn Close, John Malkovich and Michelle Pfeiffer, the cinematography of Philippe Rousselot, the costume design by James Acheson, and in particular the screenplay by Christopher Hampton, garnered considerable critical acclaim.
Swoosie Kurtz and Mildred Natwick (in her final film) appeared in supporting roles, as did young relatively unknown actors Keanu Reeves and Uma Thurman, both of whom would go on to achieve fame in the 1990s, with starring roles in Speed (1994) and Pulp Fiction (1994) respectively.
The film was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including "Best Picture"; it won those for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Costume Design, and Best Art Direction.

Now he's a great movie on the scheming petty politics of courtly 17th century France. These characters are bad, bad, bad. Except for that sweet, innocent, (topless), 18-year-old Uma Thurman.
5 out of 5.

I loved this movie. Now I wish I had seen it before Cruel Intentions and without knowing the plot outline...but I still could enjoy it immensly. Glenn Close deserves the accolades she got for this role, but it's sad that John Malkovich who did an equally great job is usually getting ignored. Pfeiffer was good, but not great and it is a great career start for Uma Thurman. The dialogue and the interaction between Malkovich's Valmont and Close's Merteuil is ingenius and the ending is heartbreaking.

Re: Dangerous Liaisons
Oh god i think i was in heaven. One of the smartest scripts i've ever seen, so sharp an witty. Glen Close just stole every scene, John Malkovich was almost her equal and deserved far more awards attention than he got. Pfeiffer was probably the weakest of the cast here but she didn't have an awful lot to do really. Fabulous ending, only spolied by having seen cruel intententions.
I have a feeling this will be immensely re-watchable, a brilliant A
