Well, you gotta credit them for putting Eternal Sunshine in the Top 25. Its not as bad as it could be. Its at least better then most of the AFI lists.

Honestly, I sometimes feel as though the people here might be too biased towards newer films. :oldtimer:

Most of them are good scripts but it's a silly list, heavily biased towards the era when the people voting on the list came of age. Tootsie? Lol. And yes I've seen Tootsie, 2 or 3 times, it's not bad but come on.

Two movies with cross-dressing as a central theme in The Top 20. Tee-hee :giggle:

That is true. But what about a healthy mixture? Tootise having a better screenplay than Eternal Sunshine? Sideways worse than Terms of Endearment?

Yeah they are, because people in general are biased towards films that came out when they were young and impressionable, whether it's us or WGA voters.

Now THIS comment is justifiable. No way does TWOO deserve to be the highest ranked musical, let alone above Singin' in the Rain, which has a much, much superior screenplay. Though I guess Star Wars has a tight pace and enough nostalgic dialogue to justify a low ranking here. :filmshnob:

Yeah and My Fair Lady also should be one of the highest ranking musicals, certainly above Wizard. But you probably know how Wizard of Oz got it's fame. It bombed when it came out in 1939 but later was shown a lot on TV in the 50s because it was one of the few color movies that they had the rights to show. So many baby boomers grew up watching it and some having a sentimental attachment.

I agree.

And with that, I'll now stop spamming this thread.

Memento at the bottom of the list is a disgrace.

To me, all these AFI and old-timers lists are just shuffling the same movies. I remember reading the "100 Most Romantic Movies" list and thinking some classics are not romance movies at all, but they appear anyway.

#102

It just missed.

My problems with the list.

#8: Network - It deserves to be on the list, but nowhere near the top 10.

#11: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid - Newman and Redford made the screenplay work. With anyone else it would've been a bust.

#27: Groundhog Day - I love the film, but it shouldn't be that high.

#32: Fargo - Should be much higher.

#43: Taxi Driver - Should be much higher.

#68: Star Wars - Higher

#74: Being John Malkovich - Top 10 material. It should be nowhere near the last quarter of the list.

#78: Rocky - Higher

#86: Harold & Maude - Should not be on the list at all.
