BASIC INSTINCT 2: What Went Wrong??
You know?? There's something to be said for a sequel to a pretty popular movie of the 90's that's gonna gross infintely less than the original and that of course is BASIC INSTINCT 2.. So what went wrong with this movie?? Why is this sequel getting blasted and bombing as badly as it is and what would it of taken to make it so much better?? I say for 1, it was the lack of real star power in this movie.. Michael Douglas was a big benefit to the 1st movie and that's something this movie lacked it would appear.. Perhaps since 1991 or whenever the 1st movie was released, that we've seen enough movie's in 13 years that have contained grautitous sex scenes like BASIC INSTINCT to the point where it isn't a big deal anymore and no one gave a crap about this.. How bout it??

I'm waiting for your mother to register on here so she can make a "BKB: What Went Wrong?" thread. I'm guessing it would be you just fell out when she was walking to the hospital and your head got squished?

What went wrong was that Michael Douglas was the star of Basic Instinct, not Stone. Her "stardom" has always been a media-created illusion. She was the Vin Diesel of the early 90s.

They needed to play the camp card on this, but instead chose to try and make an actual movie...

this was the most random sequel ever, from the moment i read that this movie was going to be made, i pretty much knew it was going to crash and burn....
Were you really the only one who thought this movie was going to be succesful?!

The plot for Basic Instinct 2: Risk Addiction and Ms. Stone's character of Catherine Davis Tramell should have been placed within the plot of Failure to Launch and the character of 'Tripp' (Matthew McConaughey),
or perhaps Forrest Gump.
Seriously though, it's a matter of providing a strong protagonist or lead actor for Ms. Stone to play off of that the audience can identify with as being at *Risk* from the promotion. Michael Douglas is a popular lead who was already pre-packaged from the character he played in Fatal Attraction.
Also, this release appears to play up the "sex" over and above any intrigue.
Movies with sex may sell, like Fatal Attraction, but movies with sex as the central plot (Rules of Attraction, The Girl Next Door, The Real Cancun) tend to bomb at the box office, though they may do well on DVD.
Rules of Attraction did about $6 Million domestic B.O., but made over $22 Million on video, last I checked.
I'm also reminded of Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, but only as an example of a sequel that waited too long to be made.

Because no one cares about Sharon Stone's desperate attempts to resurrect her career.
And the movie looked awful anyway.

Agree with Resident - the basic problem is that this sequel was made way to late. And without Michael Douglas. And apparently without any thought going into the script as well.
A straight up camp sequel might have worked given the first two, but the name was going to get in the way there, which means at this point, the only way this wasn't going to be a bomb was to make it an in name only sequel with new actors. And even then....

I agree that Stone was never a star. She might have thought she was but her stardom consisted of her vagina being exposed and that sparked interest in her. But check the grosses of her films, they never suggested she was a star. She was a good supporting actress, but never a star.

All you have to do is look at her career.
Immediately after BI she did "Sliver." What was so special about that movie? A bathtub masturbation scene. Big deal. Its always been about T&A with this psycho. Now that she is older and no one wants to see her naked much anymore, she's desperate for resurrect her B-list career by picking any script that comes down the pike.

She's in Alpha Dog, but that has Bruce Willis and Justin Timberlake. She's somehow going to think that if that does well, it was because of her...
Also, on HSX, her picture is quite spooky. Is it just me?

They should've just got a young hot semi popular actress who wouldnt even get paid 1/10 of what Stone got and the movie would've probably made more then it did with Stone in it.

True. Also, it should hav gone direct-to-video. Actually, with Sony behind it now I predict a direct-to-video Basic Instinct 3 in a few years ala Wild Things. Sex sells when it comes to direct-to-DVD films. Obviously, the cast will be all new and it will likely cost less in its entiriety than what Stone got paid for the sequel.

America hates Sharon Stone. Period. It's that simple.
She should either move to Europe, or start making indie films for a while and then try to open a mainstream film... American audiences never really respected her as a serious actress (not even after BI1 and not even after Casino/The Mighty- she was still an "egotistic slut" for most of you ), and therefore she needs to gain that respect in order to open a film by herself...

She is egotistical, and that has been proven many times by her outrageous demands.
